Scripture Cannot Be Broken John 10:35b Jeremiah 23:23-32; 2 Timothy 3 “Scripture Cannot Be Broken” • Christ is saying, “Scripture cannot be emptied of its force by being shown to be in error.” • Christ affirmed that the Scriptures were the infallible Word of God: i When confronted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11) Christ replied with three quotations from Deuteronomy. (Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:16; 6:13-14). He prefaced each of His responses with “It is written . . .” to show its authority. i In Sermon on the Mount Christ announced, “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:18) i Christ saw His life as fulfillment of Scriptures. In His first public sermon He read from Isaiah 61:1-2 and announced, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:18-19, 21) i Christ taught that He did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. (Matthew 5:17) i On the night before He was to die He quoted Zechariah 13:7 affirming that all of His disciples would “scatter” and leave Him alone. (Mark 14:27) i He scolded the Jews saying, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. (John 5:39) i After His resurrection, He scolded His disciples for being “fools” for not believing all of Scripture which speaks of Him. (Luke 24:25-27, 44-47) God Breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17) • qeo, pneustoj theopneustos {theh-op'-nyoo-stos} – “GOD” “Breathed” - 2 Peter 1:21 tells us that holy men were moved ( fe,rw phero {fer'-o}) by the Holy Spirit and that Scripture is not by the will of man. - Writers knew that their words were the words of God. (Exodus 4:11-12; 2 Samuel 23:2; Jeremiah 1:9; Acts 3:18) i Consider the following illustration to emphasize the necessity for verbal inspiration. (An employer and his stenographer.) i WORDS ARE IMPORTANT! • What Does the Word of God Profit Us: â For doctrine – it teaches us what is right. ã For reproof – it teaches us what is not right. ä For correction – it teaches us how to get right. å For instruction – it teaches us how to stay right. æ For perfecting – it grows in maturity. (See Hebrews 5:12-14) ç For equipping – it thoroughly equips us for service. No work can be good without it being done in accordance with the Word of God – i.e. “God’s way!” If It Is the Word of God Then . . . ì We need to seek forgiveness for NEGLECTING this Word. - We read words of men everyday. - We listen to words of men everyday. - God commands us to live on every word that comes from His mouth. (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4; Luke 4:4) - Consider God’s complaint about His people in Hosea 8:12. - Read Deuteronomy 4:6-8. - (Romans 7:12) The Law is HOLY, JUST, and GOOD. í It is the FINAL Court of Appeal. - Ideas, opinions, thoughts, etc. do not count when it comes to truth. - Christ said, “Your Word is TRUTH.” (John 17:17) - GOD determines what is RIGHT, GOOD, and TRUE! - We ought always say, “Thus says the LORD . . .” and not “Thus says someone else . . .” î It is Our Rule for Living – ALL LIVING. - (Psalm 119:105) “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” • To walk in darkness and to wander from the path of righteousness is foolishness when God has given us His Word to guide us! ï It is NECESSARY! - (Job 23:12) “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” - (John 4:32, 34) Jesus lived on the will (Word) of God. - (1 Peter 2:2) The Word is necessary for GROWTH. - (Hebrews 5:12-14) We cannot discern good and evil with living in it. ð It is GOOD! - (Psalm 19:10; 119:127) The Word is to be desired more than gold, therefore is must be worth more than gold, even fine gold. - (Psalm 19:10; 119:103) The Word is sweeter than honey, therefore it must be good! - (Jeremiah 15:16) The Word was JOY and REJOICING of his heart.
