Polytechnic Institute of New York University is a not for profit educational
corporation chartered in the State of New York by the Board of Regents of The
University of the State of New York and operating under New York State not-forprofit law.
The name of the institution has changed as follows:
1854-1889: Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute
1889- 1973: Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn
1973- 1985: Polytechnic Institute of New York
1985- 2008: Polytechnic University
2008 Polytechnic Institute of New York University
The Charter and Amendments thereto are attached. These include:
1. Certification of Authenticity – May 17, 1990
2. Provisional Charter of Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, July 10, 1889
(Authority to grant bachelors degree in art, science and literature.)
3. Absolute Charter – January 30, 1890
(Establishes maximum number of trustees as 21, defines quorum as 7 and
authorizes granting additional degrees as approved by the Board of Regents.)
4. Amendment granting authority to confer honorary degrees of Doctor of
Science and Doctor of Engineering – January 16, 1930.
5. Amendment granting authority to confer honorary degree of Doctor of Laws –
March 17, 1939.
6. Amendment granting authority to establish a branch for graduate study and
research in Suffolk and Nassau counties – December 16, 1960.
7. Amendment changing name from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn to
Polytechnic Institute of New York – September 21, 1973.
8. Amendment granting authority to award undergraduate degrees in Nassau
and Suffolk counties – December 14, 1973.
9. Amendment increasing the maximum number of trustees from 21 to 33 –
January 22, 1975.
10. Amendment granting authority to award undergraduate and graduate degrees
in Westchester County – May 23, 1975.

11. Amendment increasing the maximum number of trustees from 33 to 45 –
December 16, 1997.
12. Amendment changing name from Polytechnic Institute of New York to
Polytechnic University – October 18, 1985.
13. Amendment changing name from Polytechnic University to Polytechnic
Institute of NYU and to reflect status as an affiliate of NYU. Identifies by name
three incumbent trustees – July 1, 2008
14. Amendment to change name of one of the three incumbent trustees
