Historical Fact: Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the
people who died while serving in our armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every
year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after
the Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who had died. By the 20th
century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the
military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor
Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those
who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave
in national cemeteries.
STAFF INFORMATION (Do Not Read to Students)


Medium pizzas ($6.00) for sale every Thursday at approximately 10:45 a.m. in the Main Office. Call
Claudia at 818-442-8383 the day before for custom pizzas and multiple orders (more than 2). She also sells
wings and salads. If interested, let me know. - Recalde
Lately, we have been having more problems with students than in all previous months combined. Many of
these problems could be easily avoided if teachers “welcomed” students into the classrooms by standing at
the doors. Students tend to act and react differently when adults are around.

Need to return textbooks or novels to the textbook Room? Let m know, we will begin collecting students
books this week through the Social Studies classes. If you have class set with LAUSD barcodes that ARE
NOT crossed out, please return those books. If you have textbooks that have Porter Middle School barcodes,
they are yours…keep them. I also have books that we will need to discard because they are in such poor
shape….but can still be sued in the classrooms. Let me know if you are interested. All student workbooks,
teacher ancillaries and teacher editions go to your department chair or your department storeroom. Like
always, if you have any questions, please see me.
STAFF AND TEACHERS…..PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD
LIKE POSTED ON THE WEEKLY BULLETIN
Dear Teachers,
In the next two weeks, the math department has to give the end of course exam for Algebra and the
6th grade placement test for next year. Unfortunately, it requires a two hour block of time. Below is
the schedule for those tests. Only the ones marked with stars will require students to miss another
class. For most students, we do not anticipate much more than one hour and students will be
allowed to leave the testing room when he or she is finished to return to class.
If you have students who will be taking the test on a particular day, please mark them present for
that period. I will then take roll in the test location and mark absences in MISIS. I appreciate your
help and patience. This year’s testing has taken up more time than we anticipated and I appreciate
you being flexible so we can get it done.
