A limited number of “slots” will be available. 20 teams, consisting of two people, will compete in the Preliminary Round on Saturday, April 16, and 10 lucky teams will advance to the Final Round on Sunday, April 17. Objectives and Judging • • • • • • • • • • A team will consist of two youth riders (17 and under as of January 1, 2016) and their mounts. Each team will compete in three different events during the Preliminary Round: § Crawl Through the Barrel § Dizzy Cowboy § MHF Program Race Preliminary round events will run with two teams competing against each other simultaneously on identical courses. A random draw will determine which two teams will compete against each other. One person from each team will compete at a time. Both members of the teams must compete in at least one Preliminary Round event – one rider in two events and the other rider in the remaining event. The total time for each team will determine which teams advance to the Final Round. A judge for each side of the arena will decide if any infractions have taken place during each team’s run. Penalties for infraction will be added into the team’s time at the rate of a five-seconds per infraction. The judges’ decisions are final. The top 10 fastest times will move to the Final Round. The qualifying teams with the slowest times from the Preliminary Round will compete first in the Final Round. The Final Round will also consist of three events: § Barrels § Poles www.M idwestHorseFair.com Midwest Horse Fair is owned by the Wisconsin Horse Council © - 2016 M idwest Horse Fair ® • § Two Person Relay Winnings will be determined by the fastest time for the combined events being first place and the slowest time for the combined events being tenth place. Event Descriptions Crawl Through the Barrel: At the starting line, one team member will ride his/her horse to the opposite end of the arena where there will be an open-ended barrel lying horizontally on the ground. The rider must dismount, hand his/her reins to an official, crawl through the barrel, remount his/her horse and ride back and cross the start/finish line. Dizzy Cowboy/Cowgirl: At the starting line, one team member will ride his/her horse to the opposite end of the arena where the rider will dismount, hand the horse’s reins to an official, and then proceed to place his/her forehead on one end of a baseball bat. The other end of the bat must be kept in contact with the footing of the arena. While keeping his/her forehead on the bat the rider must turn around the bat six times. Then the rider will take the reins and lead the horse back to cross the start/finish line. MHF Program Race: At the start/finish line, a horse and rider will race to the opposite end of the arena where there will be a 2016 Midwest Horse Fair Program placed on top of a barrel. A judge will tell the rider what page he/she must tear out of the catalog. Once the rider has found the page and has torn it out, he/she will remount and ride back across the start/finish line. Barrels: At a signal from the starter, the horse/rider will run to barrel number one, pass to the left of it, and complete an approximately 360 degree turn around it; then go to barrel number two, pass to the right of it, and complete a slightly more than 360 degree turn around it; then go to barrel number three, pass to the right of it, and do another approximately 360 degree turn around it; then sprint to the finish line, passing between barrel number one and two. This barrel course may also be run to the left as long as a cloverleaf pattern is maintained. Knocking over a barrel carries a five-second penalty. Poles: At a signal from the starter, time shall begin and end as the horse's nose crosses the line. The pole-bending pattern is to be run around six poles. A horse may start either to the right or to the left of the first pole and then run the remainder of the pattern accordingly. Knocking over a pole shall carry a five-second penalty. A contestant may touch a pole with his or her hand in pole bending. If the original course is altered by a rider intentionally grasping a pole, a fivesecond penalty for each pole grasped will be assessed. Two-Person Relay: Both team members compete in this event. Rider one begins at the start/finish line and runs to the opposite end of the arena with a baton in hand. Rider two will wait in a square box created with lime. Rider one must pass the baton to rider two while both are in the box. Rider two will then proceed to race back across the start/finish line. Rider one must stay in the box until rider two crosses the finish line. If rider one steps on a line of the box or steps outside the box, the team will receive a five-second penalty. Participants are advised to hold onto the baton tight and pass with precision! In a dramatic twist, teams who drop the baton will be disqualified from this event and automatically bumped to 10th place. In the event that multiple teams are disqualified, that team’s total Preliminary Round time will be used as a tie breaker. www.M idwestHorseFair.com Midwest Horse Fair is owned by the Wisconsin Horse Council © - 2016 M idwest Horse Fair ® Prizes Each team member will receive the prizes below along with a ribbon: 1st: $150 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card & 2016 MHF Official Team Jacket nd 2 : $100 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 3rd: $75 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 4th: $50 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 5th: $50 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 6th: $50 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 7th: $25 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 8th: $25 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 9th: $25 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card 10th: $25 Blain’s Farm & Fleet Gift Card How to apply • • • • Application available at MidwestHorseFair.com Entry fee is $75 per person and includes (1) weekend stall and (1) 3-day horse-exhibitor weekend wristband.
