Lingo® XE Baseplate Installation Instructions
Description
The Lingo® XE is the next generation control processor that functions as a
system network manager and control monitor in Novar’s Logic One® Advanced
Building Control System.
Lingo XE monitors and logs the operations of the local control modules,
manages network communications, and provides
expandable and integrated control of the building’s
equipment. Lingo XE’s processing power, compatibility,
and multiple network capabilities provide optimum
control to cut energy costs, increase comfort, and reduce
equipment maintenance.
This document provides instructions for mounting and
wiring the Lingo XE baseplate and checking the
installation.

Precautions
Take the following precautions during installation:
§
Observe national and local electrical codes.
§
Connect 24 VAC power wiring to the terminals marked as 24 VAC only.
Connection to other terminals will damage them.
§
Do not use the Lingo XE as a final safety device.
§
Make sure that the 24-VAC power wiring is connected to a dedicated 40 VA
transformer. No other devices should be powered by the transformer that is
connected to the Lingo XE Baseplate at Terminals 34 and 35.
§
Do not ground the secondary side of the transformer for this module. (If the
Lingo XE detects a grounded transformer, a ground fault interrupter [GFI]
LED will turn on and the Lingo XE will not operate.)
§
Make sure that the Lingo XE power cannot be switched off accidentally. The
Lingo XE requires continuous power for proper operation.
Mounting the Lingo XE
Baseplate to the Wall
The following items are needed to mount the Lingo XE baseplate to the wall:
§
§
The Lingo XE baseplate
Four screws (as appropriate for mounting surface; not provided)
NOTE! The baseplate assembly should be mounted in an
accessible location with the top of the assembly not more
than 6 feet from the floor. The wall should have a flat and
smooth surface to prevent the baseplate from being bent.
The following procedure should be used to mount the Lingo XE baseplate to the
wall (refer to Figure 1, as necessary).

Lingo® XE Baseplate Installation Instructions
Supplying the Lingo XE
with Power
The Lingo XE is powered by a 24-VAC, 40 VA, Class 2 transformer (not
included—the transformer kit must be purchased separately). The transformer
must be installed not more than 50 feet from the Lingo XE using minimum
18-gauge wire.
NOTE! To maintain international compliance, the Lingo XE must
be powered by a CE-certified, UL Class 2 transformer.
Refer to Figure 2, as necessary, when installing the 24 VAC, Class 2 transformer.
Step
Procedure
1
Connect the blue and yellow leads from the transformer
secondary to the screw terminals labeled PWR IN 24 VAC,
50/60 Hz, 40 VA, (Terminals 34 and 35) located on the Lingo
XE terminal board.
2
Connect the transformer primary leads (white/black) to a
120-VAC source.
3
Connect the ground terminal (Terminal 33) to a suitable earth
ground.
4
Apply power and check voltage at the 24 VAC terminals.
§
5
Voltage should be approximately 24 to 28 VAC.
Turn off the power until needed.

Lingo XE baseplate wiring connections
DOC. #569062250—A 8/6/07
Lingo® XE Baseplate Installation Instructions
NOTE! The Lingo XE requires continuous power for proper
operation. Make sure the Lingo XE power cannot be
switched off accidentally.
NOTE! The Lingo XE requires a dedicated transformer for the
electronics. If required, a separate transformer must be
provided for its control outputs.
Wiring the Lingo XE
Inputs and Outputs
Refer to Figure 2, as necessary, and use the procedure provided below to wire the
Lingo XE input/output connections.
NOTE! All digital inputs should be dry contact closures.
Outdoor Light Sensor
Novar’s 4- to 20-mA Analog Light Sensor (ALS) should be connected to the
Lingo XE with two-conductor, shielded cable (Novar WIR-1010, Belden 8761,
or equivalent) wiring.
Step
Procedure
1
Connect the black (–) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 21 (–), the System Inputs/Outdoor Light connection.
2
Connect the white (+) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 22 (+), the System Inputs/Outdoor Light connection.
Outdoor Temperature Sensor
For outdoor temperature sensing, Lingo XE uses the 4- to 20-mA Outdoor
Temperature Sensor (OTS/2). Two-conductor, shielded cable (Novar WIR-1010,
Belden 8761, or equivalent) should be used to connect the sensor to the Lingo XE.
Step
DOC. #569062250—A 8/6/07
Procedure
1
Connect the black (–) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 23 (–), the System Inputs/Outdoor Temperature
connection.
2
Connect the white (+) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 24 (+), the System Inputs/Outdoor Temp connection.

Outdoor Humidity Sensor
Step
Procedure
1
Connect the black (–) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 19 (–), the System Inputs/Humidity connection.
2
Connect the white (+) wire from the sensor to the Lingo XE at
Terminal 20 (+), the System Inputs/Humidity connection.
Demand Pulse Input
Step
1
Procedure
Connect the isolated contacts of a pulse-type utility meter or watt
transducer to Terminals 25 (–) and 26 (+), the System
Inputs/Demand connection.
Phase Loss Sensor
Step
1
Procedure
Connect the normally open, dry contact output of an electrical
phase loss monitor to Terminals 27 (–) and 28 (+), the System
Inputs/Phase Loss connection.
Emergency/Auxiliary Input
Emergency/auxiliary connections should be made as indicated in the following
procedure.
Step
Procedure
1
Connect the normally open dry contact output of an emergency
monitoring system to Terminals 29 (–) and 30 (+), the System
Inputs/Emerg/Aux connection.
2
Verify that JP1 is in the 1–5 volt (default) position (see Figure 2).
NOTE! The auxiliary input configured for 4–20 mA is for
future use.
System Fault Output
Under normal operating conditions, a normally open set of contacts will be held
closed. When an alarm occurs, the contacts open momentarily. This signal
indicates a Lingo XE fault alarm. The System Fault connections are located at
Terminals 31 and 32.

Lingo® XE Baseplate Installation Instructions
Module Communications
Lingo XE can accept connections from 128 modules in Novar’s module network.
(The maximum number of modules is subject to software limitations.)
A maximum of 32 modules can be connected to each of the A, B, C, and D
Module terminals (Terminals 1–12).
NOTE! Modules with the same physical addresses must not be
connected to the same port. For example, modules with the
address 00 and 64 have the same physical address, so they
cannot both reside on the same COM port (A, B, C, or D).
NOTE! The Lingo XE is not compatible with the Novar’s
Network Expander.
Two-conductor, shielded cable (Novar WIR-1010, Belden 8761, or equivalent)
should be used to make the module communications connections. The following
procedure should be used.
Step
Procedure
1
Connect the black wire from the cable to the negative (–)
terminal of the appropriate COM port.
2
Connect the shield wire to the SHLD terminal of the appropriate
COM port.
3
Connect the white wire to the positive (+) terminal of the
appropriate COM port.
Checking Installation
Check the following items to ensure proper operation:
§
§
Make sure the baseplate is attached securely to the wall.
Check all wiring connections to make sure they are correct and secure.
If the wiring is correct and the baseplate is secure, reattach the Lingo XE
baseplate cover.
Operation of the Lingo XE requires the Lingo XE electronics. The Lingo XE
Electronics Installation Instructions provide information about installing the
electronics, making all other required wiring connections, and verifying proper
operation. The document is available in the Documents folder on Novar’s
Software Package CD.
