Transformer fence on AH Block 1st Street damaged
Sir, The fence protecting the transformer on AH Block 1st Street,
Anna Nagar, is in a bad condition. The small gate is missing from the
fence and had probably been stolen by miscreants. The fence was
constructed only recently and already the concrete is chipping off from
the foundation and the beams, thereby exposing the iron rods and
weakening the grille work. I appeal to the TNEB officials to repair the
fence before it collapses and also replace the missing gate.— G.M.

Enjoy a bumpy and slippery ride on Park Road!
Sir, A stretch of Park Road (Anna Nagar Western Extn.) which
connects Padi and Ambattur Estate Road is in a bad condition owing
to the ongoing major construction work within the ONGC apartment
complex.
Due to the plying of heavy vehicles and construction machinery to
and from the construction site, the wet mud accumulated in the vehicle
tyres is getting deposited in huge lumps on the road, especially
between School Road and Waves showroom junctions. Motorists are
put to lots of hardship as the surface has become bumpy and often
leads to skidding. Moreover the stretch is used by thousands of schoolgoing children and by a number of office goers who use it as a shortcut
to reach Anna Nagar West bus depot. Similarly North Main Road is
also in a very bad condition and needs to be re-laid. I appeal to the
concerned authorities and also to ONGC to remove the sticky mud
deposited on the road regularly for the safety of the road users.— Paul

Sir, I thank you for publishing the news about a lost pet dog which
found its way into my home last week. As a dog lover I had given it
temporary refuge and was sure that a report in Anna Nagar Times
would aid me in either locating its owner or find someone willing to
adopt it. My belief was well placed as on last Sunday itself a family
came to my place, liked the dog and showed their willingness to adopt
it. However I waited till evening in the hope that its original owner
would contact me, before finally giving it to them for adoption. However
to my dismay, the next evening, the family returned the dog to me
saying they did not find it compatible with their home. But in the
meantime, a woman in Mogappair had shown keen interest in adopting it as well. I contacted her and she immediately came to my place
and took the dog. She said that her late husband was a veterinarian
and that she is a dog lover and is adept in raising them. I spoke to her
a couple of days after she took it with her and she said that the dog had
settled in well with her. I once again thank Anna Nagar Times for the

Metro Rail introduces discounted
trip cards to attract commuters

Chennai Metro Rail has started issuing trip cards to commuters at
discounted rates in an attempt to increase patronage. Commuters
will get a 20 percent discount from the original fare on using the trip
cards for their rides in the 10-km stretch between Koyambedu and
Alandur.
These are three categories of cards base on number of trips: 12-trip
card is valid for seven days, 50-trip card is valid for 30 days and 100trip card for 60 days.
A refundable deposit of Rs. 50 is collected from commuters who avail
these cards.
The regular fare for this stretch range between Rs. 10 and Rs. 40 and
for the special class it is between Rs. 20 and Rs. 80.

Book on Dr. V.S. Natarajan
released

A book ‘Vidhaikkul Oru Virutcham’ on
the life history of Dr. V.S. Natarajan
(resident of Q 16, East Anna Nagar) was
released in a function held in Thenkasi on
Sept. 6.
Authored by poet A. Selvaraasu, the book
gives an in-depth biography of the doctor,
his achievements and the importance he has given for the
treatment of senior citizens right from his practice inception
till date. It also traces the present growth of geriatric medicine
right from its origin. Dr. Natarajan, a senior geriatrician, has
been practicing geriatric medicine for more than three decades.

Clean water supply restored to
Westwood Apartments after
report in Anna Nagar Times
The Metrowater contamination problem which was plaguing
the 64 residences of Westwood Apartments (North Main
Road) for more than six months was resolved after it was
reported in Anna Nagar Times recently.
The residents had hitherto closed the feeder valve of the
Metrowater sump and were filling it by buying water from
private tankers. A Metrowater official said that the
contamination problem which is affecting water supply to
Arvind Apartments on the same road and Vanavil Apartments
on East Main Road will also be resolved in a couple of days.

Udavum Karangal helps in rehabilitation of
Dutch woman

Tiruvannamalai by the local
authorities and handed over
to NGO Udavul Karangal
(NSK Nagar, Arumbakkam)
for treatment and rehabilitation on July 9, will be going
back to her country on Sept.
14 and joining her family
thanks to the efforts of S.
Vidyaakar (Udavum Karangal founder) and his team.
The woman who identified
herself as Arina was suffering
from drug addiction. She had
come to India as a tourist in
2013 and lost all her money,
credit cards and travel documents, including her passport
and visa. She somehow ended
up in a village in Tiruvannamalai and had taken to drugs.
When she was brought to
Udavum Karangal, she was
behaving violently and after
initial treatment, gave her
mother’s phone number in
Netherlands. Udavum Karangal, after contacting her
mother and confirming the
details, started the process of
Arina’s rehabilitation and
repatriation.
Vidyaakar said that, as first
priority, she was given medical and psychiatric treatment
as she was under severe mental trauma and depression.
He said that her rehabilitation became a big challenge
as she did not want to go back

The Consul General of Netherlands issued an emergency passport to Arina after
Vidyaakar personally met
him and explained her helpless situation and medical
condition. Vidyaakar also
coordinated with FRRO Chennai to arrange for her exit
permit/visa for her return
travel which involved a lot of
documentation work and
expenditure of Rs. 21,600
borne by the NGO along with
her airfare.
Since Arina is not in a
physical/mental condition to
travel alone, her aunt Carmin
Juffinger has come to Chennai
to take her back. The meeting
of Arina with her aunt was an
emotional reunion. It was nonstop conversation between
them in Dutch, which showed
Arina’s attachment towards
her family. But unusually,
ever after meeting her aunt,
she still continued to
emphasise her liking of India
and insisted on her coming
back once again, legally.
Both of them are scheduled
to board a flight to Netherlands on Monday, Sept. 14.
Vidyaakar said that Sept.
14 will be a historic day for
Udavum Karangal in the
sense that it will be the first
time they will be repatriating a person to a foreign
country.
Nethrodaya offers ‘B.Ed –

visually impaired

According to Thirupurasundari, founder of the newly formed
history group, Shenoy Nagar was named after Joseph Patrick
Lasrado Shenoy of Madras Corporation during the erstwhile
British regime, in 1944.

JJ Nagar Fire Station responds to
several neighbourhood fire alerts

In the last month alone, JJ Nagar Fire Station attended to more
than 15 fire alerts and put out fires in several places in the
neighbourhood.
They included minor house fires caused due to faults in electrical
gadgets, fire in garbage bins and a fire in a hotel in Tirumangalam.
The major incidents included a big fire in a timber godown in
Ambattur Industrial Estate at around 9.30 p.m on Sept. 2 which was
put out after a 10-hour struggle in which a number of fire tenders took
part. A major fire incident was averted when the fire personnel acted
fast and put out a fire that broke out in the first floor of Yesesi Super
Market (Anna Nagar) at around 11.30 p.m on Aug. 31 where a number
of paper files were kept.
The same night, at around 2.15 a.m, a fire that broke out in a hut
in Gujji Street (East Anna Nagar) was put out before it could spread
further.
