Technical FAQ Lutron Temperature Control Questions Answers General 1. How do I know if the thermostat will work with my HVAC system? The thermostat works with most HVAC systems with the exception of line voltage electric baseboard, Mili-volt, and systems with proprietary control interfaces. For a complete list see the “RadioRA® 2 HVAC Controller, seeTemp™, and Wireless Temperature Sensor Specification Sheet” found on www.lutron.com. 2. How many zones can the thermostat control? The HVAC controller can control one heat zone and one cool zone. It can control up to three heat stages and two cool stages. 3. How can I control multiple zones? You can control additional zones by adding extra HVAC controllers. Up to 5 wireless sensors can be added to a main repeater. 4. Can the thermostat control humidity? No. 5. Is the thermostat Energy Star qualified? No. Energy Star stopped rating thermostats in 2009. Other thermostat manufacturers are gradually removing the Energy Star logo from their packaging and literature. The default schedule is designed to provide recommended energy savings. 6. Can the thermostat operate without a main repeater? The thermostat requires a main repeater for normal operation. If the main repeater is removed the HVAC controller, seeTemp™ wall control, and wireless temperature sensors will continue to function if they are within wireless range (30 feet) of each other. 7. Do I need to use the RadioRA 2 PC software for programming? For initial configuration, the system can be temporarily set up without using the PC software, but it will function as a nonprogrammable thermostat. That is, the set point can be controlled, but no scheduling is possible. The RadioRA 2 PC software must be used to enable these features. 8. What are the maximum/ minimum set points? Default: Heat max: 76º F, Heat min: 60º F. Cool max: 80º F, Cool min: 64º F. Can be modified as follows: Heat max: 70º–103º F, Heat min: 40º–60º F Cool max: 80º–113º F, Cool min: 50º–70º F 9. What is the minimum heat/cool set point difference? This is the minimum temperature difference between the heat and cool set points. This ensures that the heat and cool systems will not run at the same time. Default: 4º F Configurable: 3º–15º F 1 Technical FAQ Lutron Temperature Control Questions Answers General 10. What is temperature calibration? Temperature calibration allows the temperature sensors in the system to be adjusted to match an independent temperature reading. The temperature can be calibrated +/- 5º F from the default. 11. What is minimum run time? Minimum run time is the minimum length of time that the heat or cool stages will run once started. This prevents over cycling of the HVAC system and helps to prolong the system’s life. 12. What is minimum off time? Minimum off time is the minimum length of time that the heat or cool stages will remain off after turning off. This prevents over cycling of the HVAC system and helps to prolong the system’s life. 13. What are turn on temperature deltas? This is the amount that the temperature must drop below the set point for heating to turn on or the amount that the temperature must rise above the set point for cooling to turn on. For example, if the heat temperature delta was 2º F and the set point was 68º F the heat would turn on when the temperature dropped to 66º F and would turn off once the temperature rose to to 68º F. 14. Can I control the thermostat while away from home? Yes, by using the iPad® iPhone®, or iPod touch® app. Please see app note #231 “Using a VPN Connection to Remotely Access Lutron® Systems” which can be found on the RadioRA® 2 resource web site. 15. Is the thermostat schedule programmable? Yes, by using the RadioRA 2 PC software and the iPad® iPhone®, or iPod touch® app. 16. Can I control the thermostat with Radio Powr Savr™ sensors? Yes, you can change the set points on the thermostat by using the RadioRA 2 PC software to program Radio Power Savr occupancy/vacancy sensors. 17. Can I control the thermostat with seeTouch® keypads? Yes, you can program keypad buttons (using the RadioRA 2 PC software) to change set points or to enable/disable the “Green” mode. 18. Can I control the thermostat with a Pico® wireless control? No. 19. Can I control the thermostat with the astronomic timeclock? We recommend using the built in HVAC schedule rather than the astronomic timeclock to change set points during different times of day. 20. Does the thermostat have an outdoor temperature sensor? No. 2 Technical FAQ Lutron Temperature Control Questions Answers General 21. Can I control the thermostat from 3rd-party remote controls/ automation systems? Yes, through integration. Refer to the Lutron Integration Protocol Guide on resi.lutron.com/radiora2 for more information. 22. Does the thermostat have a “hold” feature? Yes, the “hold” feature lets you suspend the normal HVAC schedule and use a different set point. Once “hold” is turned off the HVAC controller returns to it’s normal schedule. You can activate “hold” from the iPad® iPhone®, or iPod touch® app. 23. Can the thermostat be used in conjunction with a mechanical “freeze prevention” thermostat in vacation homes? Yes, the “freeze prevention” thermostat would be wired in parallel with the HVAC Controller. HVAC Controller 24. How do I install the HVAC controller? The HVAC controller should be installed by a qualified HVAC technician. The controller should be installed vertically or horizontally using the supplied mounting screws and connected to the HVAC system using the wiring guides in the HVAC controller instruction sheet. 25. Can the HVAC controller be installed in a hot attic? The HVAC controller should be installed indoors in a space where the temperature does not drop below 32º F or rise above 160º F and the humidity does not rise above 90%. 26. Where should the HVAC controller get installed? The HVAC controller should be installed near the HVAC system and within 30 feet of a RadioRA® 2 repeater. 27. Can I use a 3rd-party wired temperature sensor? Yes, you should use a 100 kΩ curve “J” thermistor. It should be connected to the HVAC controller with a maximum wire run of 100 feet. seeTemp™ Wall Control 28. Can seeTemp set the temperature above 80º F or below 60º F degrees? No, you can set temperatures above 80º F or below 60º F from keypad buttons, integration commands, timeclock events or from the iPad® iPhone®, or iPod touch® app. 29. Is seeTemp required for temperature control in RadioRA 2? No, you can control temperature from the iPad® iPhone®, or iPod touch® app and through integration. 30. Can I use multiple seeTemp wall controls with one HVAC controller? Yes, each seeTemp wall control counts as one system device. 3 Technical FAQ Lutron Temperature Control Questions Answers seeTemp™ Wall Control 31. Can seeTemp be installed in a low-voltage bracket? Yes, the HVAC controller can be powered from 24V AC or 120V AC. 32. Can seeTemp be installed in a 120V wall box? Yes. 33. Can I lock out the buttons on seeTemp? No. 34. What does the eco button on seeTemp do? The eco button enables/disables “eco” mode which automatically raises the cool set point and lowers the heat set point to save energy. Wireless Temperature Sensor 35. What is the battery life of the wireless temperature sensor? 5 years. 36. What happens when the battery dies? When the battery on one wireless temperature sensor is low the “Room” temperature LED on the seeTemp wall control will flash rapidly. The system will function with the remaining wireless temperature sensors. When the batteries on all wireless temperature sensors are low the “Set” LED on the seeTemp will flash rapidly. Then the system will use the wired temperature sensor. If the batteries in all wireless temperature sensors are low and there is no wired sensor the “Room” LEDs on the seeTemp will scroll up and down and the system will shut down. 37. Can I use multiple wireless temperature sensors with one HVAC controller? Yes, you can use up to four wireless temperature sensors with one HVAC controller and up to a maximum of five wireless temperature sensors per main repeater. 38. How accurate is the wireless temperature sensor? +/- 1º F For more information, please contact Technical Support (800.523.9466) or visit www.lutron.com. © 04/2011 Lutron Electronics Co., Inc.
