RE-013 2010 Rotating Electrics Flywheel Ring Gear Failure All Makes Ring gear fails after fitting of new flywheel or starter motor In several cases when a starter motor or flywheel is replaced the original and new starter or flywheel ring gear fails shortly afterwards. When a starter motor is replaced it is imperative to ensure the bell housing is thoroughly cleaned and the flywheel ring gear is thoroughly checked for any signs of damage. The flywheel ring gear is induction hardened so any damage occurred from the failed starter will remove the hardened surface and subsequent wear will be accelerated, producing the results in the pictures below. Wear on flywheel has removed induction hardening, accelerating wear when new starter has been fitted A similar issue happens when a new flywheel is fitted and the original starter has damaged or worn teeth. This will cause accelerated wear on the new flywheel and the original starter motor. When a new flywheel is fitted, always check the starter motor for any signs of damage or wear, including wear between the pinion and pinion shaft. Replace if necessary. Always ensure the gearbox bell housing is clear of any flywheel dust and foreign objects when fitting a new flywheel. When an original starter motor is used with a new flywheel, the worn pinion teeth will not mesh cleanly with the ring gear, causing accelerated wear on both parts www.valeoservice.co.uk Valeo Service (UK) Ltd, Heming Road, Washford, Redditch, Worcestershire, B98 0DZ Tel: 01527 838300 Fax: 01527 523732
