Get involved
As one of our learners, you’ll never sit there and be talked at – that’s not the way we do learning. We’ll encourage
you to be involved, there will be healthy discussions, thought-provoking experiences and plenty of opportunities to
express your ideas and ask questions.
Quality
“
“
Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember,
involve me and I learn - Benjamin Franklin
We hold the coveted Matrix Standard - this is the unique quality framework for the delivery of information, advice
and guidance (IAG) to support individuals in their choice of career, learning and work. The IAG that we give will be
impartial and in your best interests. The matrix assessor had this to say:
“
A major area of strength for Learning in Wiltshire is the passion and
enthusiasm of the staff who, without exception, are excited about what
they are doing and take genuine delight in seeing learners progress.
“
Location, location, location!
We’re making it as easy as possible for you to learn close to where you live or work so our classroom-based courses
run throughout the year at many locations from Chippenham and Corsham in the north, across to Melksham and
Trowbridge in the west and down to Devizes and Salisbury in the south.
Delivered by experts
Your tutor will be qualified and experienced, with real-life and practical knowledge of their subject. If you’re
enrolling onto a longer qualification programme, you’ll be assigned to a personal tutor who’ll guide you and
provide advice and support for the duration of your learning.
4
Things you need to know
Confidentiality
All information given to any member of the Learning in Wiltshire team will be treated as confidential and used
only for the purpose(s) for which it was gathered. We will not use your information otherwise without your express
consent in writing.
Safeguarding
We have a clear commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable
adults. We work alongside other services and agencies in Wiltshire to prevent abuse or neglect and undertake to
investigate any concerns if we think a child, young person or vulnerable adult may be at risk of harm.
Equal opportunities
We deliver services within the terms of promoting quality and valuing diversity and operate in line with Wiltshire
Council’s equality and diversity policy and guidance - details are available on the council website at
www.wiltshire.gov.uk
Course details
In this booklet we’re giving you a snapshot of the main topics you can expect to cover on your course. More
detailed course descriptions are available at www.learninginwiltshire.org.uk or you can obtain a course
information sheet from us on request.
Course closure
Some courses do need to have a minimum number of learners to run effectively; on occasion, this means that if
we don’t receive the required number of enrolments we reserve the right to close the course and reschedule; if this
happens you can choose to have a full refund or to transfer onto the rescheduled course date.
5
Fees and funding
The cost of courses varies depending on the subject, level and size of the qualification. The all-important
information is given alongside each course title, so browse to the course that interests you and you’ll find the cost
there. Prices are correct at time of publication.
We know that for some people, being able to take up adult learning opportunities is only possible if they receive
help towards the cost of tuition, exam fees, travel and childcare.
Family learning courses
All of our Family Learning courses are FREE and childcare can often be provided to enable parents with preschoolers to take part. See more on Family Learning on page 12.
Paying by instalments?
If you do need to pay the course fee, you can spread the cost by paying in instalments if the course duration is
more than 4 weeks and the fee is greater than £50; you’ll need to make an initial payment when you enrol to
secure your place.*
Learners aged 24 and over
24+
If you’re aged 24 or over and would like to enrol on a qualification at level 3 or 4, but need help with course fees,
you can apply for a 24+ advanced learning loan. Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your household income and
there’s no credit check. What’s more, you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a
year. Courses which are eligible for a 24+ learning loan are indicated by the 24+ symbol.
It’s easy to apply – go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans but before you apply you’ll need a Learning
and Funding Information Letter from us, so please get in touch. This government website gives you access to some
useful information about 24+ advanced learning loans including:
• Step-by-step eligibility guide to find out if you might qualify
• Repayment calculator to help you find out how much you would pay back monthly based on your annual
salary
Professional and career development loans (PCDL)
A PCDL could help you pay for learning that enhances your job skills or career prospects (the course doesn’t have
to lead to a qualification). It’s a commercial bank loan, so you will have to pay it back once you have left your
course, but you won’t pay interest for the period when you’re learning. Visit the National Careers Service website
to find out whether you qualify for a PCDL.
nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/advice/courses/funding/pages/loans.aspx
Cancellation and refunds
In certain specific circumstances as identified in our fees policy you may be entitled to a full or partial refund of any
course fees paid.*
*Full terms and conditions are laid out in our fees policy which is available on our website or on request.

Types of learning
Terminology
You’ll come across words like ‘courses’, ‘workshops’ and ‘programmes’, but don’t get bogged down in the
terminology - just think of them all as opportunities to learn. A programme will usually take a bit longer to
complete.
Accredited learning
Accredited courses are those that lead either to a single unit certificate or recognised national qualification.
There will usually be a form of assessment (nothing too onerous).
Non-accredited courses do not involve any tests, exams or assessment and will not lead to a qualification.
Work-based learning
Our work-based programmes are an opportunity for those in work or volunteering in a relevant role to gain
further knowledge and develop their skills in a practical way whilst gaining a role-appropriate qualification.
Most of your learning takes place at work where you’ll apply what you’ve learned to your job; in this way it’s
very straightforward to gather evidence of your competency that you’ll need to gain the qualification.
Classroom learning
Our accredited and non-accredited courses all take place in a relaxed and friendly classroom environment.
You’ll be part of a small group of learners who have chosen the course either to improve their career
prospects or because of a personal or professional interest in the subject. Whatever the reason, you’ll get to
meet new people and learn from the experts.
Elearning
Elearning gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace, when and where it’s convenient. If you want to
gain a qualification in Computing and IT, for example, you’ll self study using our elearning programme – very
straightforward and an efficient way to learn. If your course includes an element of elearning we’ll let you
know in advance.
Bespoke learning options for employers
We offer blended learning solutions so that your business and its people can benefit from a range of learning
styles at a competitive cost. When you contact us to discuss your specific learning needs we’ll work with you
to devise a development plan that’s right for you. For larger groups from one organisation, there can be a
degree of flexibility in the price and of course, if you have suitable training facilities, we’re happy to come to
you which will deliver further savings in time and cost.
7
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. They’re about
giving keen, talented people of all ages the chance to realise their potential
within a business that really values them. Modern apprenticeships are suitable for anyone aged 16 and over, not in
full time education, but they’re not only for school leavers and young people; they’re also great for adults looking
to start a new career or moving into a new role within the organisation.
An apprenticeship can take between 1 and 4 years to complete.
We’ll indicate alongside a qualification title if it can be completed as part of an apprenticeship.
Good for employers
Good for the apprentice
Offering an apprenticeship is an opportunity to:
The benefits are plentiful, including the
opportunity to:
• Gain additional resource to help your
business grow
• Bring in or develop new skills and keep
training costs down
• Talent spot and nurture your future rising stars
• Introduce new ways of working and generate
new ideas
• Connect more with customers, particularly
the younger generation
Recruiting an apprentice
Taking on an apprentice is a competitive process, so
you’ll get your pick of the best and we’ll help you to
recruit.
Financial highlights*
• Government funding enables us to deliver the
off-the-job training and assessment elements of
the apprenticeship free of charge.
• A £1500 grant is payable to employers who take
on an apprentice aged 16 – 24.
(*criteria apply)
Converting a job to an apprenticeship
If you’ve recently recruited and think it’s too late,
maybe not! If you’ve got someone who is keen to
develop and been in post for less than a year please
get in touch to explore the options for converting
the role to an apprenticeship.

•
•
Work alongside experienced staff
Gain job-specific skills
Earn a salary and get holiday pay
Study towards a related qualification
Enhance career prospects
Types of apprenticeship
Depending on your existing skills and qualifications
you can apply for one of three types of
apprenticeship:
• Intermediate (level 2) – equivalent to 5 GCSEs
• Advanced (level 3) – equivalent to 2 A levels
• Higher (level 4 and above or a foundation
degree)
How will I learn?
An apprenticeship is a work-based programme
so most of your time will be spent at work and
training on-the-job.
The off-the-job training will be delivered by a
training organisation like us and we use a blended
approach that includes elearning and e-portfolios
to make your learning fun, flexible and efficient.

Traineeships
A traineeship is a training programme with work experience to help young people
become ‘work ready’ by giving them the skills and experience that employers want.
At its core are support with English and maths and a high quality work placement to improve their chances of
successfully gaining an apprenticeship or other job in the future. Typically a traineeship lasts 3 – 6 months.
A work placement does not affect entitlement to Jobseekers Allowance or Universal Credit.
Good for employers
Good for the trainee
By offering a traineeship you could transform a young
person’s life.
If you’ve been unsuccessful when applying for an
apprenticeship or other job due to a lack of skills
and experience then you could be a good candidate
for a traineeship.
You’ll need to be:
• M
otivated to work.
• Unemployed, or work less than 16 hours per
week.
• Aged 16 - 24 and not have any A levels or
more than 5 GCSEs .
With a traineeship you’ll get:
• W
ork preparation training to help you
compete for an apprenticeship or other job.
• Maths and English support to boost your
chances of getting a job.
• Help to build your CV and to prepare for
interviews.
• Work experience to develop new skills.
• Confidence to take the first step to securing
a job.
• A job interview with the company if a role
becomes available or at least a reference and
an exit interview.
“
It was really good having a trainee. It
grounded me and challenged me to think
about how I was going about my business.
Some of the simplest of tasks became part of
the learning process, and reflected back to me
how important it is for young people to have
the opportunity to ‘step inside’ the workplace
without the pressure of getting it wrong.
“
Wiltshire Council manager
“
I would like to thank you for having me, as
it has been a great pleasure and I have gained
many new skills which I can apply in any job
situation.
“
• A
ll training costs are met by government
funding and there is no salary to pay.
• All that’s required from you is a high quality
work placement and some time to mentor and
support your trainee through the programme.
• Traineeships are flexible and present an
opportunity to build a pool of quality future
recruits.
• You can design a traineeship programme that
suits the needs of your business; this could
include a relevant, vocational qualification.
• Working in partnership with us, you’ll get our
full support:
• We’ll help you to find a suitable trainee (no

Community learning
Our community learning programme supports the community through a range of targeted provision, working
with housing associations, local partners, charities and neighbourhood groups to meet identified priorities and
learning needs.
As part of this community provision we deliver a programme of family courses
and events which are widely accessible via schools and children’s centres across
Wiltshire to support parents and their children.
Most people are surprised to find out that children can spend as little as 15% of
their waking hours in school over the course of a year, so knowing how you can
help your child develop a love for learning whilst having fun together can make a
real difference to how well they do at school.
Who are the courses for?
Family learning courses are designed to raise parents’ confidence to support their child’s learning and development
through both adult-only, and parent and child programmes.
The courses are fun, informal and free and designed to support families where parents or carers have not yet
achieved a full Level 2 qualification (5 GCSEs, grades A-C) or where there is a clearly identified need.
Adults will have the opportunity to take nationally accredited courses in English and/ or maths, brush up their IT
skills and receive advice and support on finding employment.
Where do they take place?
Courses are delivered locally, in the heart of the community to make it as easy as possible for people to take part.
Crèche care for pre-schoolers can be arranged, which means that little ones can be looked after in a safe and
secure environment, while mum, dad or carer is developing new skills and meeting new people in the room next
door. You’ll be with a small group in a supportive learning environment to help build confidence.
What can I learn?
Adults can join a range of courses including
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Keeping up with the kids in maths and English
Healthy eating
Family budgeting
Family English for speakers of other languages
Early language development
Parenting
Maths and English qualifications

Computing and IT There’s something for everyone, whether you are new to computing • an occasional/social user • want to develop
skills to improve job prospects, work smarter or become a super user • gain a qualification.
Where do the computer courses run?
Classroom courses will be held in one of our IT training suites at County Hall, Trowbridge or Churchfields in
Salisbury; these courses are scheduled to meet demand so the frequency at each location can vary. If you’re
working towards an IT qualification then you’ll study, in the main, via elearning so you’ll get to learn flexibly, for
example, in the comfort of your own home or place of work.
Group training needs
If you’re an employer with staff training needs, talk to us about bespoke delivery sessions to develop your team’s
IT skills. Our fully equipped IT training rooms can each comfortably accommodate a group of 8 learners or if you
have on-site facilities, we’re happy to come to you.
Will there be tests or exams?
The classroom courses listed are non-accredited so you can develop your skills without the pressure of tests or
assessments. If you’ve chosen to work towards an ITQ qualification then there will be an element of assessment to
evidence your skills and gain the qualification.
Gaining a qualification
ITQ qualifications at Level 1 and 2 are accredited by the British Computer Society so you’ll be studying towards a
universally recognised qualification that’s valued by employers nationwide. We’ll set you up and give you access to
our e-learning program for your chosen qualification so you’ll have the flexibility to self-study at your convenience.
When you’ve worked through the program and feel ready to take the tests, we’ll get you booked in at our IT suite
where you’ll complete the tests needed to gain the qualification. If you ever want additional support alongside
your elearning studies then you can book a personal session with an IT trainer, for a nominal additional fee.

Supporting teaching and learning
Teachers aren’t the only ones who make a difference to learning in schools. Learning support staff e.g. teaching
assistants and MDSA’s, play a vital role in today’s classrooms - they work with teachers, get involved in lesson
preparation and work with small groups or individuals, allowing the teacher to concentrate on teaching the class.
