Hello and welcome to The Glasgow School of Art and the
Continuing Education Department’s Autumn to Spring
programme 2015/16.
During Autumn to Spring we run weekly day and evening courses
for adults and Saturday courses for children. The programme runs
for 18 weeks over two terms from October to March. Our course
range is diverse and we welcome everyone regardless of previous
experience or ability. Whether you are a beginner wishing to
explore a new found interest, or if you intend to apply for Further
or Higher Education and need assistance building a portfolio, or are
an established artist who would like to develop an existing talent,
we are more than happy to discuss your requirements and find the
right course for you.
Our courses are taught by experienced artists and designers, who
are specialists in their field, and classes are held in studios and
workshops normally used by full time GSA students. Due to recent
events, Drawing and Painting classes this coming academic year
will take place in the McLellan Galleries, a new addition to The
GSA campus. The department’s other courses will be housed in
subject designated buildings on the Garnethill campus.

Glasgow Visual Artist Diane Dawson
talks about the use of animals and
storytelling in the creative process
and her appreciation of Continuing
Education.
Storytelling is at the heart of the art I make, not full
stories with beginning, middles and ends, but tiny little
snapshots, which draw the viewer closer, then leave the
narrative open to interpretation. I have a fascination
with habitats and behaviour, real or imagined stages
and how society performs. More often than not, the
work created includes animals, who take on the role of
character actors, in the same way that we gave voices
to our childhood toys to animate the stories from our
imagination.
I work primarily in painting and printmaking creating
small bodies of work, distinct to express various
social themes. In my paintings, the subject/character
is key, small intimate and often formally rendered. In
printmaking, I use the medium to create single scenes,
reminiscent of film stills, family photographs or press
cuttings – scenes where the characters are often out
of place, further questioning what is real and what is
fabricated.
My art voyage has been deeply rooted in the Glasgow
School of Art Continuing Education experience. While I
had studied ‘colouring in’ at Glasgow’s Central College of
Commerce in the early 80’s, my artistic productivity was
limited to doodling until 25 years later when I signed
up for Summer School at the GSA. What felt like a
spontaneous decision had probably been bubbling inside
for a couple of years. A career in Arts Administration and
Event Management, had kept me close to the city’s lively
arts scene, but it no longer met the creative output I
needed. So I selected the course which I thought would
be most difficult for me – Life Drawing – where on Day
One, my survival plan was to huddle tightly into a corner,
allowing no-one to get behind me and look at my easel.
Then I relaxed a bit, and made drawings, which were not
hideous.
“I didn’t have
a game plan,
only now to
ensure that I
was drawing
and making
work in an art
environment
at least once
a week”
I didn’t have a game plan, only now to ensure that I
was drawing and making work in an art environment at
least once a week, for myself, most importantly, being
led by people who knew what to do, like draw hands
and feet! Continuing Education was like a great big
art sweetie shop, where I could just try things. And so
began 5 years of Summer Schools, Easter Schools and
Evening Classes, in drawing, painting & printmaking – I
couldn’t get enough. After four years I was ready for the
next level and finally freed up some time in my work
life to participate on the part-time Portfolio Course. My
thought behind this was not with a view to applying to
art school – don’t be ridiculous – but just to push myself
to try a new way of thinking about making art across a
variety of disciplines. And just to be disciplined. During
this time, I kept up my life drawing classes as the idea
of not doing that would now have felt like a betrayal.
I would not have been able to look at the life models
with their clothes on.

ARTIST ARTICLE

Leaves are falling & the grass is growing
Christmas 2005 was the turning point when I literally
couldn’t stop making art all the time, like a caricature of
an artist. I ruined my front room carpet with red paint
and barely noticed, I forgot my husband’s name and my
child went to school in odd socks, with no lunchbox.
I was hooked. I was looking at the world with new eyes
and finally realised that I wanted to be a professional
artist, to keep pushing myself, and to be ambitious for
my work. To do this I needed to apply to art school.
Fast forward – after a successful portfolio application
- I arrived at the GSA campus in the autumn of 2006,
muttering “what have I done, what have I done” and
after a roller coaster four years, exited in the summer
of 2010 thinking, “look what I’ve done”.
“I was looking
at the world
with new eyes
and finally
realised that
I wanted to be
a professional
artist”

Exploring Colour
Drawing and Painting Workshop
Tutor Rosemary Beaton
Tutor Donald Sutherland
The first term will be an imaginative approach to drawing
and painting working directly from the nude model
(both male and female) with various mediums whilst
experimenting with line, texture, tone, colour and collage
and incorporating working with movement. The second
term focuses on developing and exploring colour and
composition, producing finished paintings based on ideas
from the first term. Individual tuition will be given.
The focus of this course is to build technique and develop
a wide range of skills while exploring the drawing and
painting process. Still life and imagination will be the
main component of the course but you will also have the
opportunity to work directly from the nude life model, one
class each term. Students will be encouraged to experiment
with materials and work towards developing an individual
approach. More experienced students will be encouraged
to challenge old habits, try new approaches and re-assess
their working process. Group discussion, demonstration
and individual direction will aim to help you examine the
interaction of ideas, subject matter and expression.

Experimental Acrylic Abstraction
Tutor Suzanne Taylor
Tutor Cynthia Bowles
Tutor Paddy Dorrian
Tutor Conor Kelly
This course will focus on abstraction using oil and
acrylic. Specifically we will look at portrait abstraction
and study methods used by artists such as Freud, Bacon
and other contemporary non-representational painters.
Development of ideas will be explored through sketching
and painting, taking inspiration from self-portraits,
collaging, imagination, and photography as sources for the
paintings. The student will gain a deeper understanding
of form, colour, texture, layering and the techniques of
abstraction. The course is suitable for beginners and also
those with previous experience.
This course is designed for anyone using oil paint for the
first time, or those with limited experience that want to
enhance their knowledge and skills of drawing and painting
further. Working from still life, you will be introduced to
fundamental drawing and painting techniques, receiving
step-by-step instruction throughout. You will learn about
the nature and use of materials, tone, composition and
colour through a series of progressive exercises designed to
suit each individual’s interests and stage of development.
This course is designed for a wide range of students, from
beginners to artists who are more experienced.
This course will focus on the concept of abstraction and
the processing of everyday visual materials through the
medium of acrylic and other media. Through explorative
drawing you will develop ideas to work from, alongside
memory, imagination and representation as sources for
paintings. You will explore two dimensional surfaces,
investigating the relationship between colour and form,
as well as experimenting with layering, texture and mark
making, developing a deeper relationship in the actual
process of applying paint. This course is suitable for
beginners and also those with previous experience.

The course will explore the practice of both life drawing
and painting by working directly from the nude model. The
course will allow the student to learn about measurement,
analysis, appropriate materials and techniques to render
a pose. Students will also develop an understanding of
form, proportion, structure and composition. By the end of
the course the student will be comfortable in a life room
and be able to realise a pose using appropriate techniques
and media. Previous experience of drawing from the
nude is not required as the course will be differentiated
to the needs of the individual student. The course will be
structured with the morning session having a theme and
the afternoon session using what has been learned that
morning and over previous weeks.
Stained Glass Workshop
Experiments in Paint and Print
Tutor Eilidh Keith
Tutor Cathy Campbell
This course covers the various techniques for creating
leaded and stained glass windows. You will explore the
processes of cutting glass, painting, staining, etching,
leading, fusing and slumping. Exploring ideas and
technical details through drawing is also an important
component of the course. Tuition will be delivered
through demonstrations and one-to-one assistance, as
students work at their own pace on their chosen personal
projects. An initial stock of lead and glass is provided
for demonstrations and sampling. Students are asked
to supply their own glass and drawing materials as the
course continues and their individual designs progress.
Learning to familiarise you with ways of developing your
artistic and creative skills, this course will expand your
methods of resourcing and responding to subject matter
while exploring new approaches in your creative practice.
Through a series of exercises, you will work with a variety
of techniques and media, including mono-printing, collage,
painting (waterbased - acrylic, water colour, gouache, inks)
and relief printing. The aims of this course are to expand
your conceptual approach whilst developing knowledge
and skills in media handling and process. The relaxed and
supportive atmosphere is conducive to individual and
group explorations. By the end of the course, you will have
a body of work and broadened outlook which reflects a
busy and creative programme of study.
Beginners and experienced students alike are welcome;
however the Wednesday option will be more suited to
those who have existing skills in this subject.

Advanced Painting Workshop – Life
Tutor Cynthia Bowles
Although this course is geared to students who have
experience in drawing and painting the nude figure,
committed beginners will be accommodated. Using
a limited palette employed by the Glasgow School of
Art in 1910, students will become adept at palette
layout and the stages of building a painting, freeing
them to work more intuitively. Close attention will be
given to manipulating paint, luminosity, spectral colour
and purposeful treatment of lost and found edges in
the figure ground relationship. Composition will be
examined throughout the course. Constructing the figure
as a convincing volumetric form, opens the way for
exaggeration and more creative manipulation. The course
objective is to offer ways for students to use what they
see, what they know and what they feel in tandem, to
advance their work.
