The Glasgow
School of Art
Open Studio,
Open to All…
The Continuing Education Department at The Glasgow
School of Art has a long tradition in opening its doors to the
community of Glasgow and the surrounding area through
our classes for adults and children. It is this tradition we
wish to extend and build on by renaming as Open Studio.
Many of our students have their first experience of art
school through attending our day and evening classes, or
taking the opportunity to immerse themselves in weeklong programmes throughout the summer. Many of our
graduates started their GSA experience on one of our
courses and often return to continue their learning with us;
some even come back as tutors.
We work extensively with those who may be keen to
continue their learning more formally and apply to art
school, either here or elsewhere in the UK. Our Portfolio
Preparation classes have helped students to successfully
become undergraduates across all areas of Fine Art,
Architecture and Design. We are very proud of the
achievements of all our students and are keen to build
on the experience we have developed over the years and
continue to create and offer new opportunities for the
wide range of people who choose to study with us.
Building on our portfolio work and preparing students
for entry to art school is a key area of development
for our Widening Participation team. We work closely
with schools throughout the west of Scotland,
particularly focusing on schools with low progression
rates to Higher Education. Working to raise aspirations,
developing the creative skills necessary for art school
and supporting the application process, significantly
increases the applications to ourselves and other
institutions from students who previously had not
considered art school as a viable option.
Autumn Spring Programme 2016/17
Linked to our school enhancement activity, is the
work that we do with Further Education colleges.
Working with colleagues across the GSA and local
colleges, we are supporting students to make the
successful transition to studying here following
successful completion of their college courses. Many
of these students will be entering as second or third
year students, so supporting the transition to a new
environment helps to prepare them for this new
experience.
Although a significant amount of our work in this
emerging department focuses on Glasgow and the west
of Scotland, we are keen to support international students
who also wish to study here. The International Foundation
Programme offers a one year programme to students from
overseas, supporting the development of their language
skills at the same time as developing their studio practice
and application to full degree programmes.
This is an exciting time for the department. We aim
to maintain the ethos and commitment to our core
activities of adult and children’s classes whilst continuing
to open up new accessible opportunities to study at the
GSA, enabling us to realise the development of the new
department as the Open Studio.
Inside this brochure you will find our courses listed by
the day of the week with dates, course times and fees
included in each course descriptor. We hope that you
will find a course on which you would like to enrol and
we hope to see you this October at the GSA.

Tutor Eilidh Keith
Tutor Cathy Campbell
This course covers the various techniques for creating
leaded and stained glass panels. You will explore the
processes of cutting glass, painting, staining, etching
and leading. Exploring ideas and technical details
through drawing is also an important component

Open Studio, Open to All…
Autumn Spring Programme 2016/17
Advanced Life Painting –
Constructing the Figure
Introduction to Portraiture
with Charcoal and Oils
Tutor Cynthia Bowles
Tutor Paul Deslandes
Although this course is geared to students with
experience in drawing and painting the nude figure,
committed beginners will be accommodated. Using
a limited palette employed by the Glasgow School
of Art in 1910, students will become adept at palette
layout and the stages of building a painting, freeing
them to work more intuitively. Close attention will be
given to manipulating paint, luminosity, spectral colour
and purposeful treatment of lost and found edges in
the figure ground relationship. Composition will be
examined throughout the course. Constructing the
figure as a convincing volumetric form, opens the way
for exaggeration and more creative manipulation. The
course objective is to offer ways for students to use
what they see, what they know and what they feel in
tandem, to advance their work.
The emphasis of this course is to develop your drawing
and painting skills through a practical approach to the
art of portraiture. Working directly from the model,
we will begin working in charcoal to form the basis of
this study. You will then move on to oils to examine
the relationship between colour and form, painting and
compositional techniques. The course will also consider
the practice of portraiture work from painters both
past and present, using their work as inspiration for
students. This course is ideally suited to beginners and
also welcomes those with previous experience.

medium of acrylic and other media. From explorative
drawing, memory and imagination, you will develop ideas
and sources for paintings. You will explore two dimensional
surfaces, investigating the relationship between colour
and form, as well as experimenting with layering, texture

Bringing the Outdoors In
– Recreating the Painted
Landscape in the Studio
Tutor Lee Craigmile
To faithfully represent nature in all its complexity as
a painting can be problematic. This course will teach
students to paint refined landscape paintings with a
step-by-step process that utilises the academic methods
of 19th century masters. Students will be encouraged
to paint studies en plein-air (out of doors) and to copy
landscape paintings of the Old Masters. These studies,
along with compositional sketches and photos, will then
be used to create a fully rendered, realistic landscape
painting. The course will emphasize classical techniques
such as paint-handling, colour mixing, composition/
design, and accuracy of drawing and tonal structure.
Oil Painting – The Next Level
Students of all levels of experience are welcome.
Tutor John Quinn
Location McLellan Galleries
Places 12 Time 7pm – 9pm
Fee £280 Discounted Fee £255
This course is designed for those who have used oil
paint before and who wish to advance the development
of their work in rendering a greater sense of three
dimensional space and realism. In addition to colour

being explored through a series of progressive exercises,
the course also aims to alter the students way of seeing
and interpreting subject matter.

Children’s Course Bursaries As part of the School’s strategy to

available for Children’s Saturday Courses. This support is aimed at
low-income and unemployed parents/guardians of children who
would otherwise be unable to join the Programme.
Bursaries are available for Children’s Courses only. Our aim is
to offer direct assistance to such students in the form of a fee
waiver directly from the Department. There are a limited number
of bursaries available and only one bursary may be awarded per
household.
Please contact us on +44 (0)141 353 4596/4565 or (0)141 566

Children’s Course by phone or in person before you can apply
for a bursary. Bursary applications received without prior
booking can only be accepted if there is a place available on
the course at the time of award.
Tuition Students are provided with tuition of the highest quality.
Course tutors are members of the GSA staff or invited artists
and designers drawn from the wider artistic community who
specialise in their field. Our aim is to ensure that students have
access to current initiatives in education especially in the area
of skill acquisition. Tuition is through demonstration, group
discussion and one-to-one advice and guidance.
Life Models Some courses include a life model. Life Models,
both male and female are nude/unclothed and a level of studio
etiquette must be followed (life room rules and etiquette
information will be available for these classes). The model works
to the direction of the tutor, involving short, moving or sustained
poses. Models are clothed for portraiture classes. Photography
is not permitted within the studio during a life class. In the rare
circumstance that a life model cannot attend at short notice, a
clothed model will be provided if possible.
Studios/Workshops Courses are held in workshops and studios
across the GSA campus. The McLellan Galleries will now house all
our drawing and painting courses after the unfortunate incident
in the Mackintosh Building, while specialist technical workshops
are used as per the needs of your selected course. The department
does not take responsibility for personal belongings lost or
damaged while students are on campus. We would ask you to be
vigilant of any belongings and report any cause for concern.
