1 2016/17 AUTUMN SPRING PROGRAMME OPEN STUDIO 2 The Glasgow School of Art Open Studio, Open to All… The Continuing Education Department at The Glasgow School of Art has a long tradition in opening its doors to the community of Glasgow and the surrounding area through our classes for adults and children. It is this tradition we wish to extend and build on by renaming as Open Studio. Many of our students have their first experience of art school through attending our day and evening classes, or taking the opportunity to immerse themselves in weeklong programmes throughout the summer. Many of our graduates started their GSA experience on one of our courses and often return to continue their learning with us; some even come back as tutors. We work extensively with those who may be keen to continue their learning more formally and apply to art school, either here or elsewhere in the UK. Our Portfolio Preparation classes have helped students to successfully become undergraduates across all areas of Fine Art, Architecture and Design. We are very proud of the achievements of all our students and are keen to build on the experience we have developed over the years and continue to create and offer new opportunities for the wide range of people who choose to study with us. Building on our portfolio work and preparing students for entry to art school is a key area of development for our Widening Participation team. We work closely with schools throughout the west of Scotland, particularly focusing on schools with low progression rates to Higher Education. Working to raise aspirations, developing the creative skills necessary for art school and supporting the application process, significantly increases the applications to ourselves and other institutions from students who previously had not considered art school as a viable option. Autumn Spring Programme 2016/17 Linked to our school enhancement activity, is the work that we do with Further Education colleges. Working with colleagues across the GSA and local colleges, we are supporting students to make the successful transition to studying here following successful completion of their college courses. Many of these students will be entering as second or third year students, so supporting the transition to a new environment helps to prepare them for this new experience. Although a significant amount of our work in this emerging department focuses on Glasgow and the west of Scotland, we are keen to support international students who also wish to study here. The International Foundation Programme offers a one year programme to students from overseas, supporting the development of their language skills at the same time as developing their studio practice and application to full degree programmes. This is an exciting time for the department. We aim to maintain the ethos and commitment to our core activities of adult and children’s classes whilst continuing to open up new accessible opportunities to study at the GSA, enabling us to realise the development of the new department as the Open Studio. Inside this brochure you will find our courses listed by the day of the week with dates, course times and fees included in each course descriptor. We hope that you will find a course on which you would like to enrol and we hope to see you this October at the GSA. 3 4 8 Experimental Waterbased Media Evening Courses Monday Day Courses Life Studies – Advanced Workshop Drawing and Painting: An Introduction Drawing and Painting Workshop Creative Techniques in Stained Glass Oil Painting – Working from the Still Life Image: Oil Painting Palette Twilight Life Drawing Life Drawing – An Introduction to the Human Figure Landscape Drawing and Painting Drawing and Painting – An Introduction Painting the Portrait in Oils – A Classical Approach Jewellery Workshop – Beginners Experiments in Paint and Print Architecture Portfolio Preparation The Life Room Fused Glass and Slumping Advanced Life Painting – Constructing the Figure Ceramics Handbuilding – Techniques Explorative Acrylic Abstraction Introduction to Portraiture with Charcoal and Oils 10 14 16 Evening Courses Tuesday Evening Courses Wednesday Evening Courses Thursday Twilight Life Drawing for 5th & 6th Year Pupils Life Drawing and Painting Workshop Foundation for Life Painting – Advanced Rendering the Human Form – Life Drawing and Painting Portrait Drawing and Painting – Structuring the Head Oil Painting – The Next Level Acrylic Painting Contemporary Jewellery – Jewellery as an Art Form Oil Painting Black & White Photography Architecture Portfolio Preparation Silversmithing Creative Techniques in Stained Glass Bringing the Outdoors In – Recreating the Painted Landscape in the Studio Black & White Photography – Intermediate Jewellery Workshop – Advanced Sculpting the Head in Clay Sculpture Studio Practice – Advanced Sculpture Studio Practice Sculpturing the Figure in Clay Creative Techniques in Stained Glass – Advanced 18 20 Children’s Saturday Courses Information Drawing and Painting – Creative Practices Department Contacts Creative Sculpture Black & White Photography Portfolio Preparation for 5th & 6th Year Pupils Course Dates Tutor Listing General Information Campus Maps 4 Open Studio, Open to All… Autumn Spring Programme 2016/17 Day Courses Term One: Monday 3 October to Friday 2 December 2016 Term Two: Monday 9 January to Friday 10 March 2017 Experimental Waterbased Media Tutor Cathy Campbell This course will cover the techniques and approaches to Watercolour from a diverse and abstract approach while still covering the essentials needed to become proficient in the basics of the medium. The emphasis of this course is to develop your drawing and painting skills through a practical approach to the art of portraiture. Working directly from the model, we will begin working in charcoal to form the basis of this study. You will then move on to oils to examine the relationship between colour and form, painting and compositional techniques.
