This event will take place at the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles Street, 6:30-8 p.m., and will feature readings and recitations from J. Paul Holcomb, Madison Heggins and Destinee Aguirre. J. Paul Holcomb has served as Lewisville’s first Poet Laureate since August 2014. He has published more than 230 original works in multiple journals and anthologies nationwide and in England during his illustrious career, and received several awards including the 1997 Lucidity Chapbook Book Award from Bear House Publishing, the Poetry Society of Texas’ Hilton Ross Greer Outstanding Service Award, the 2004 Edwin M. Eakin Memorial Book Publication Award, and the featured State Poet at the 2013 Austin International Poetry Festival. Madison Heggins gained statewide recognition earlier this year when she won the 2016 Poetry Out Loud competition in Austin. The 18-year-old Lewisville High School senior beat out 25 other Texas high school students to claim the title and earn the chance to represent Texas at the national competition in Washington, D.C. in early May. Destinee Aguirre was a top-10 finalist in the same Poetry Out Loud competition. Aguirre is a sophomore at LHS Killough Campus. National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started the Poetry Out Loud competition in 2006. Students in the competition present three memorized poems from the Poetry Out Loud anthology. One must be 25 lines or fewer, one must be written before the 20th century and a third was student’s choice. Heggins chose “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, “Self- Help” by Michael Ryan and “Black Boys Play the Classics” by Tori Derricotte. Aguirre chose “Spanglish” by Tato Laviera, “A Poison Tree” by Robert Blake and “Weighing In” by Rhina P. Espaillat. This was the first year LHS participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition. Heggins’ victory secured $500 for her school to buy poetry books and materials. Aguirre and Heggins will be acknowledged for their achievements at the MCL Grand event. Other poets have been invited to read their work aloud at the April 27 event. Staff from the Lewisville Public Library will be in attendance at the MCL Grand to check out books to those who are inspired to read more poetry. They also will issue new library cards to those who have not yet signed up. What’s Ahead? * Calendar of Events are attached.
