UL–Classified FIRE-TROL
Prefabricated Fireproofed
Columns speed construction,
reduce costs, improve quality
FIRE-TROL columns have provided the construction industry with a revolutionary type of fireproofing, which has been used in thousands of projects throughout the United States. Developed over four decades ago, still
nothing can compare to this unique product.
The FIRE-TROL column utilizes a method of pre-fireproofing structural
building columns that provides architects, engineers and contractors with
a durable, versatile, and aesthetically pleasing fireproofing option.
Certification of this product by Underwriters Laboratories Inc., assures
quality and acceptance throughout the country. Due to the column’s composite design, FIRE-TROL can provide one of the smallest and strongest
finished cross sections of any fireproofing method on the market.
The structural portion of the FIRE-TROL column is created from wideflange, pipe, or tube material meeting the latest ASTM grades and specifications and is completely fabricated in our U.L.
inspected facility. After the column is laid-out, it
receives its special architectural steel shell. The
size and shape of the steel shell is determined
by the fire resistance rating required, and the
architectural needs of the project. A two, three,
or four-hour fire resistance rating can be provided with different shell configurations. Our certified welders install all the required plates and
connections per the latest AWS codes. After all
welding is completed; the fireproofing insulation
is installed between the structural column and
the architectural shell. For pipe and tube
columns, a mixture of 5,000 p.s.i. concrete is
also added to the center of the column. After a
final cleaning and shop priming, the FIRE-TROL
column is shipped to the jobsite where it is erected in the same manner as an ordinary, unprotected steel column.
The rugged, low maintenance steel shell is the most distinctive feature of
the FIRE-TROL’s unique design. After a finished coat of paint, the column’s smooth steel surface will provide decades of service, with minimal
maintenance. Because the exposed parts of the column are painted
steel, it is suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Optional
zinc-rich primer, or hot dip galvanizing, further enhances the corrosive
resistant qualities of the architecturally exposed shell. Non-structural
items, such as window sash, door frames, or brick anchors can be simply
attached to the sides of the shell using mechanical fasteners or welding.
The same steel shell which gives the column its beauty, also provides
extreme durability and tamper resistance.
By pre-fireproofing the columns during shop fabrication, field labor and
time are reduced, while quality control is increased. There is no waiting
time for forms to be erected or wallboard to be installed. Delays caused
by inclement weather due to curing or drying times of plaster or concrete
are not factors associated with our columns.
The FIRE-TROL column provides an attractive and practical alternative
when architecturally exposed columns require a strong, clean and durable
fireproofing. They are the perfect solution when a design requires
exposed columns in schools, parking garages, warehouses, and correctional facilities. They are also extremely popular in religious, health care,
industrial, commercial, and some residential applications.

This is FIRE-TROL:
A prefabricated, fireproofed unit
consisting of a load-bearing steel
column (A), encased in a special
proprietary insulating material (B),
which is permanently protected by
an outer nonload-bearing steel
shell (C). FIRE-TROL columns are
rated and labeled by Underwriters’
Laboratories, Inc., for fire retardant classifications of 2,3, and 4
hours. Columns are completely
shop fabricated and shipped to
the job site ready to erect.

Design considerations
Column design data
Materials
Load bearing members as specified by the engineer typically conform to the following grades:
FIRE-TROL columns are designed
in accordance with the latest specifications of the America Institute of
Steel Construction and the
American Concrete Institute.
Minimum covering of fire-proofing
is in accordance with the minimum
hourly rating requirements established by Underwriters’
Laboratories, Inc. All structural
steel used in the core conforms to
ASTM Specifications. Concrete
filling for pipes or tubular sections
is of a 5000 p.s.i. mix. The outer
shell, sash stops, curtain wall connections and other special features
are provided in accordance with
the architect’s details. Welded shop
and field connections are in strict
conformance with the current
requirements of AISC. Columns
are given one shop coat of standard metal primer unless otherwise
specificed. FIRE-TROL columns
are readily adaptable to single or
multi-story structures of conventional, traditional, or contemporary
design...and with any combination
of materials.
A complete selection of load-bearing column types is available with
exterior shells in round, square,
and rectangular shapes. The round
exterior shells are Type OO, OS,
and OH. The square and rectangular exterior shells are Types SH,
RH, SO, SS, and RR.
FIRE-TROL columns meet the
requirements of local, state, national, and federal codes governing
fire-resistive construction. Each
FIRE-TROL column is fabricated in
conformance with the requirements
of Underwriters’
Laboratories,
Inc., and bears
a UL label
certifying compliance with
requirements
as stated in
their directory.
