The Glass Envelope: a Vision for the Future Wednesday April 18 & Thursday April 19, 2012 Sala San Marco, 215 Preston Street, Ottawa, Ontario Modern architecture is all about glass and glazing. The past is re-imagined with curtain wall and sloped glazing (the chateaux-style National Gallery). Normally staid, blocky high-rise rental buildings have been replaced by soaring condo towers with endless views through floor-to-ceiling window walls. New forms are created with structural glass, point support glass, cable net structures and other systems (the curvaceous, organic front façade of the Ottawa Convention Centre). Yet, such systems are thermally weak and of limited life span. Energy prices are increasing. New fossil fuel sources have greater environmental legacy risks. Codes and standards requirements are tightening to control energy consumption, improve occupant comfort and durability. BECOR presents a practical, two-day session on new codes, standards and other design considerations related to glass and glazing systems, and presentations by industry-leading product manufacturers and glazing specialists that will demonstrate how to meet those new requirements with products and systems currently on the market. Technical topics include the new Model National Energy Code for Buildings, thermal performance modeling of curtain walls, coated-glass selection for energy performance and thermal comfort. Product presentations include vacuum insulating glass units and panels, factory applied and post-applied films, ‘switchable’ glazing, curtain wall, residential window wall, structural glass systems, vinyl and fiberglass windows, skylights and roof windows. BECOR Seminars are Eligible for OAA Self-Directed Continuing Education Points _________________________________________________________________________________________ B U I L D I N G E N V E L O P E C O U N C I L O T T A W A R E G I O N P.
