Research Institutions in India In India, research has been traditionally carried out mainly by special research institutes. Only in recent years, universities have started doing their own research. Apart from the University-level institutions, research is carried out by a number of government-funded and managed centers. For instance, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), established in 1942, is the premier institution for scientific and industrial research with a network of 37 laboratories, 2 cooperative industrial research institutions and more than 100 extensions and field centers. Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) is famous for historical research and Centre for Social Research is known for its social research. There are also private-funded research institutes like BioAxis DNA Research Centre Pvt. Ltd., (Hyderabad and Lucknow), and Industrial research institutes such as TATA Research Development & Design Centre and IBM Research.
