STEPS TO DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT YOUR PC
When moving any computer, printer or accessory, it must be powered down and
disconnected from the wall outlet or outlet strip. In addition, each PC component
(monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) and printer or accessory item must be
disconnected from the main PC (processor unit) and network outlet. It is suggested
that individuals or departments handle the preparation of their desktop equipment
prior to any moves. To accomplish this, please follow the procedure listed below:
Disconnection prior to the move:
1. Notify Desktop Computer Support at least two weeks in advance that an
equipment move is planned. This is required to minimize any disruption of your
network services. Depending upon the extent of the relocation, you will receive
instructions on how reconnection is to be handled.
2. Arrange the move of equipment with your campus maintenance department.
3. On the day of the move, unplug all electrical plugs from the wall and/or outlet
strips.
4. Before disconnecting any interconnecting cables from your PC, label each cable,
along with its corresponding connection location on the PC. You should use masking
tape and a marker to do this. Avery type labels sometimes fall off the cable ends
during a move, so avoid these. See Labeling Suggestions below for instructions.
5. Disconnect all PC components and accessory devices, such as printers, external
fax machines, or scanners from the PC. The cables should be unplugged from the PC
end and kept with the component or accessory. The only exception is the PC base
unit power cable, which should remain connected to the PC. Be careful to unplug
only from the side that can be unplugged when applicable. In some instances, it is
necessary to unscrew the cable connector before you can pull it out.
6. If your PC is part of the college network, disconnect the network cable (it looks
like a telephone connection) from your PC and the wall, and bring the cable with you.
7. After all cables are disconnected; the computer can be moved to its new location.
Reconnection after a move:
1. Reconnect the PC components and accessories cables to the PC by matching the
numbers on the cable to those on the PC. For example, plug the cable numbered 1 to
the number one location on the PC. Make sure the plug is properly aligned with
connector prior to reconnecting. Do not force any cable into its corresponding
connector. All cables are designed to fit only when aligned correctly. If you
experience a problem reconnecting a cable, confirm that the cable and connector are
aligned correctly.
2. Connect each PC, component, and accessory device to an electrical outlet.
3. If directed by Desktop Computer Support, locate the network wall jack in your
new location and use the network wire you brought with you from your previous
location to connect your PC back onto the college network.
4. Turn your PC and accessory items on.
5. Check to make sure everything is back to normal. If not, shut down your PC,
verify that all the cables are securely connected by pushing them completely in, and
that they are connected to their proper location. Turn your PC on again and recheck
for proper operation.
6. If you experience any problems, call Desktop Computer
Support at x4505.
Labeling Suggestions:
Prior to disconnecting any cables, securely wrap a strip of masking tape around each
cable near its plug and attach a strip of masking tape to the location on the PC where
it is currently connected. Number both the cable and its corresponding PC connector
location. For example: label the mouse cable as 1 and its corresponding connection
position on the PC as 1. Then label the keyboard cable as 2 and its corresponding
connector on the PC as 2. Continue to do this until you have labeled all connections.
