MASTERS COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAMS
Instructional Guide to Students
Health Education
Follow the steps below:
1. Register for comps with Juanita Turner (205.934.2446, jturner@uab.edu) in EB 207 by the third week of the
term you plan to take comps. Students should sign up during the last semester of coursework; this allows
adequate time to take needed courses to prepare for the exam. To be eligible to sign up for comps, students
must be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed HE 610, HE 631, HE 642, EPR 607/608, HE 689
AND HE 697. Successful completion is defined as earning a “C” or above in each of these classes.
2. Comprehensive exams include a written paper, development of a PowerPoint and an oral presentation. These
products are developed by the student using the information contained in the case study. During registration,
students will receive a study guide for the comps and should sign up for a time slot for the oral presentation
they will provide using PowerPoint slides. After registration, you will be added to the MAEd Comps Blackboard
(Bb) Learn system. Bb Learn is where you can access student materials; you must also turn in your paper and
powerpoint presentation through Bb Learn.
3. There are TWO important dates for the comprehensive exams – release date and due date of the case study
(contact jturner@uab.edu for dates). The case study will be posted to Bb Learn during the week of midterms;
students will be notified of the date. The case study will be released on that date by 12 noon. Students may
then go to Bb Learn, print off the case study and begin working. Students have approximately 2 weeks from this
date to complete and turn in the paper and PowerPoint. Students may choose to submit early but MUST submit
a completed paper and PowerPoint through Bb Learn email system as attachments by the due date, 12 noon.
NO EXCEPTIONS ARE ALLOWED; a student will fail comps if they do not submit the paper and Power Point on
or before the advertised due date. (If you have not already done so, sign up for a presentation time slot– see
#4).
4. Students will provide a 25-30 minute oral presentation (with Power Point) summarizing their responses to the
case study (time slots will be divided into 45 minutes). The student should finish in time for the next scheduled
presentation.
5. Faculty will grade both the paper and presentation within approximately 2 weeks. The student will receive
notification stating their pass/fail status. IF a student fails, it is the responsibility of the student to immediately
contact Dr Retta Evans, Program Coordinator, for remediation instructions (996.2701 rrevans@uab.edu).
