All recreationally-caught sportfish are subject to a one-meal-per-week statewide consumption advisory. Trout stocked from Huntsdale FCS are subject to a one-meal-per-month consumption advisory. The reported numbers in fractions of a part per million derived from the sample test results are not as meaningful as the broad categories of consumption advice. The numerical test results are subject to variation as a result of sample and statistical variations and laboratory analysis. Numbers that may look different may mean exactly to the same thing. All samples tested in 2002 were taken, prepared for analysis, and analyzed by the Department of Environmental Protection. Recommendations for consumption advisories were made by DEP and the Department of Health. For spring 2002, five samples of eight trout were taken from each state hatchery, and decisions about the appropriateness of consumption advisories were based on a different statistical analysis than used in the past. This analysis (the results of which are shown in the UCL-C column) incorporates not only the mean but also its sampling variability. Trout were taken from Huntsdale FCS in November 2001. Those samples were tested, and it was decided to retest them because of the degree of variability among the samples. Samples were again taken in January 2002. The two-year-old trout tested in January 2002 showed a high degree of variability in the sample results. Accordingly, the Commission will not include any age two trout from Huntsdale in the scheduled 2002 spring stockings until completion of further testing and analysis. Fillets from Age 2 trout at Huntsdale were retested on a raceway-byraceway basis. Sixteen raceway sections were tested. Trout from 11 of these raceway sections showed levels of PCBs consistent with a onemeal-per-month or one-meal-per-week consumption advisory. Starting after May 21, 2002, these trout are being stocked in waters previously stocked from Huntsdale FCS as part of the 2002 stocking effort. These fish, like all trout stocked from Huntsdale, are under a one-meal-permonth consumption advisory. Trout from the other raceways, which showed higher levels of PCBs (above one-meal-per-month) are not being stocked in Spring 2002.
