Information Technology D2L Brightspace Faculty Help Topic: Grading Quizzes To grade quizzes in D2L Brightspace, you need a quiz item, and a grade item for the quiz in the Gradebook. Creating a Grade Item To create grade items to attach to a quiz, assignment, Dropbox, etc.: 1. Go to ASSESSMENTS then Grades 2. Click the Manage Grades tab 3. Click New > Item to create a new grade item. 4. Choose what type of grade item it will be. IT | D2L Brightspace Page 1 Last Modified: 8/26/16 5. For example, let’s choose Numeric. The new item page will open. Fill in all required information (Name, Max points, etc.), and select Save when done. Linking Quiz to Grade Item To link a quiz to a grade item: To link a quiz to a grade item, you will need to make a quiz or edit an existing quiz. Once you are in the Quizzes page, edit a quiz by selecting the quiz name. 2. In the Quiz properties tab, navigate to the ‘Grade Item’ field and choose the grade item the quiz will be linked to 3. Once you’ve selected the grade item, click [Save]. Grading Quizzes (Auto Grading) You can set up quizzes to automatically be graded and put in the Gradebook; but you can only do so if the quiz has a definite answer such as multiple choice, T/F, etc. IT | D2L Brightspace Page 3 Last Modified: 8/26/16 How to set up auto-grading: 1. Select the quiz you wish to auto-grade in the quiz page. 2. In the assessments tab, select allow automatic export to grades 3. Select Save and Close Grading Quizzes (Manual) Quizzes that require manual grading such as short answers, long answers, or any other questions that require manual grading can be graded easily. To grade quizzes manually: 1. Go to your quizzes page, select the dropdown menu of the quiz you wish to grade 2. Select Grade 3. If there are multiple attempts, select the attempt you wish to grade. 4. The grade attempt window will open. Select Recalculate if you need to update a grade or AutoGrade to auto grade questions such as multiple choice, matching, etc. IT | D2L Brightspace Page 4 Last Modified: 8/26/16 5. For questions that cannot be auto graded, grade their answer manually by entering in a score in the corresponding fields. For example, this short answer obtained 0 points out of 5 for a bad answer. 6. Once you have graded all possible answers, click Recalculate then Save. 7. Your Gradebook will then be updated.
