Cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells
(HSCs). HSCs have two important features: they can renew themselves and they can create different types of specialized blood cells.
HSCs have been used in thousands of transplants and are being used to treat more diseases each year. In fact, they may be able to replace a wider array of cells than once thought possible. Currently, researchers are exploring the potential of using cord blood stem cells in experimental therapies for autism, cerebral palsy and diabetes (type 1).

• Processing & Extraction: Maximize the number of cells
FamilyCord processes the tissue and extracts the cells into a solution. Storing cells in solution (rather than as tissue segments) allows for superior cryopreservation that maximizes cells available for future use. Some other banks only store tissue segments.

A small sample is cultured from every cord tissue to demonstrate cellular growth. This quality control step provides verification of MSCs growth potential for future therapies.
