A new style of business
Introduction
Technology
Summary
Small and midsized businesses (SMBs) face many challenges as they adapt to today’s new style of doing
business. Shifting government regulations, threats to network security, requirements for 24x7 application
availability and the demands for new methods to work with customers, suppliers and employees require
ongoing investments in IT. These issues impact SMBs even harder because of budget constraints and limited
IT resources. SMB’s who learn how to efficiently utilize IT assets and increase IT productivity will be successful.

SMBs expect simple, affordable and reliable IT that can be easily managed and grow to meet future
requirements. According to recent ESG research, over one third of SMB IT decision makers confirm that
cost reduction initiatives will help drive IT investments. Cost reduction initiatives are recognized as the
number two overall driver behind technology investments in 2015. (AMI Partners Business Benchmarking
Whitepaper “Moving Technology Infrastructure into the Future: Value and Performance through
Consolidation” January 2014).
However, SMBs have other issues beyond the budget that makes change difficult.
•Growth in infrastructure has increased management complexity.
•Older IT assets often cannot meet the performance demands of new applications. Servers older than
4 years deliver only 4% of the performance of current servers. (Source: Intel Planning Guide of 12/13,
“Modernize the Midsize Business IT Infrastructure, Four Steps to Better Performance and Lower Costs”).
•High availability requirements add major costs and increase complexity.

Demands a new style of IT
Virtualization is a key enabling technology that can power IT modernization and
reduce costs. Unfortunately, SMBs often forgo technology investments such as
virtualization that could dramatically reduce operational costs and improve IT
efficiency because they lack the resources or the know-how, or the costs seem
beyond their budget. But advanced technologies like virtualization no longer
need to be restricted to larger organizations with plenty of IT staff. Servers,
storage and networking that are designed to implement virtualization are now
affordable for SMBs.
Shared virtualized servers, storage and networking will allow you to modernize
your IT infrastructure and reduce costs.
•Improve asset use, consolidating applications on fewer, more powerful modern
servers.
•Increase application availability with features that allow you to easily replicate
data or move virtual machines between servers.
•Integrate the management of the hardware through the virtualized
management console to centralize management for all the server, storage and
networking resources.
Drive

costs
Virtualization can dramatically help to reduce costs, improve efficiencies and
increase productivity, but the impact can address needs in the business,
IT operations and technology areas also.
In order to grow your business, you will need to engage with customers,
suppliers and employees in new ways. New applications are required to develop
unique products, and offer better services. SMBs need methods that will allow
them to deploy these applications more quickly and more cost effectively. To
plan for virtualization, businesses should begin to address these questions:
•What new business opportunities could you pursue with modernized IT?
•What new business could you generate?
•How does application downtime affect your business?
Brochure
But the growing number of applications can cause operation management complexities. SMBs also need
ways to streamline operations that will enable you to increase productivity of your existing staff. Plan to
address these issues within IT operations:
•What are your plans to manage the expanding number of servers, storage and network?
•How will you improve IT staff productivity?
•What are the most effective management tools that should be deployed and which ones can be
eliminated?
Most SMBs have aging servers, storage and networking that do not have the performance and capacity to
handle this new wave of applications. Plan to review your technology environment.
•What are your plans to consolidate IT resources?
•What are your plans to reduce IT complexity?
•How can we reduce IT power and cooling costs?
Virtualization that is built on new powerful IT infrastructure can deliver what the business requires, while
streamlining operations and reducing overall cost.

Virtualization lowers business costs
Small and midsized businesses (SMBs) want to reduce IT costs in order to free up capital for other business
investments. Choosing where to invest to achieve these cost efficiencies can be confusing. Successful SMBs
look for applications areas with the fastest payback.
Challenges and issues
One of the most successful and proven methods to reduce IT costs is to virtualize your IT resources.
Virtualization allows you to aggregate servers, storage and networking into a single pool that can be
assigned to applications from a single management tool. This will allow you to increase asset utilization,
implement new services faster and improve application availability.
Summary
SMB BENEFITS
Increase asset utilization
•Eliminate stranded capacity on old servers and storage that
cannot address today’s business requirements.
•Spend less money on servers and storage to support your
business while providing more performance and capacity.
•Consolidate servers, storage and networking hardware in
pools that can be allocated when needed.
Implement new services faster
•Shared pools of servers and storage allow you to rapidly
deploy applications at much lower cost.
•Ability to add resources at a moment’s notice allows you to
improve performance and capacity when required.
•Virtualization management tools provide a simple method
to manage all resources.
CHALLENGES AND ISSUES
•Older technology has an ongoing maintenance burden and
critical workloads hosted on aging IT infrastructure are at
constant risk of failure.
•Utilize new more powerful servers, storage and networking
to increase application performance and improve Virtual
Machine density.
•Managing older systems with multiple management licenses
is time consuming and costly.
•Traditional IT infrastructure cannot keep pace with changing
market conditions. The challenge is determining which
workloads to virtualize.
•Today’s business requirements can be hard to predict. Being
able to scale on the fly has become a necessity.
•IT staff that is trained in the virtualization tools can quickly
add resources without the need for specialized staff.

SMB use case: Increase
server utilization
HPE has designed servers, storage and networking products that address the
requirements of virtualization. These products maximize hardware savings
through higher capacity utilization and improve operational efficiencies through
integration of management with the virtualization platform management tools.
A construction company was battling with an aging server environment that
became difficult to manage. In addition, work processes were not running
smoothly and they wanted better safeguards for business continuity. They
decided to standardize applications in a Hyper-V virtualization cluster based on
HPE StoreVirtual nodes, HPE ProLiant servers and HPE ProCurve networking. The
use of a HPE StoreVirtual efficient storage helped to keep the investment relatively
low. HPE was able to offer both the servers and the storage in a single package.

Through this implementation, they found they were able to optimize use of
the hardware. The solution delivered 65 percent efficiency, as opposed to the
20 percent utilization they previously experienced. Another benefit is that the
company can respond more quickly to anything that the business might want;
for instance, if there’s a temporary need for extra capacity, extra space or a
different configuration for a test environment.
Management—Product Brief, 2014
They were also able to increase application availability. Instead of a single
server being used for just one application, the virtualized cluster provided spare
compute capacity that is used for an added level of redundancy.

SMB use case: Enable virtualization
with lower costs and improved
network performance of 10-fold
A small college wanted to deploy a new wired network infrastructure to reduce cost, increase performance,
expand capacity and add scalability to support the virtualized server environment and complement the
wireless network. They needed to reduce costs while meeting rapidly changing business requirements and
improve IT performance.
The Business goals were to lower total cost of ownership significantly; improve the teaching and learning
environment, and support new student and staff applications. The IT goals were to provide a reliable,
high-capacity wired networking infrastructure that increased performance; deliver the bandwidth, scale
and connectivity to support network-intensive applications; and offer an open, standards-based secure
architecture that was agile and lowered IT management costs.
Brochure
However, while they were making plans to refresh the network, users were
already commenting about a sluggish log-on process at the beginning of
the day, wireless connectivity issues and slow application performance. IT
management became increasingly concerned about the ownership and support
costs of the existing network. The IT team frequently expressed worries about
network manageability.
The HPE network solution exceeded all expectations. The new network boosts
performance 10-fold, delivers the capacity and scale for the foreseeable future,
simplifies network manageability and lowers ownership costs while enhancing
the teaching and learning environment. The HPE Networking solution is based
on two HPE Networking 5400 core switches and 30 HPE Networking 2920
edge switches. The new 10GB backbone delivers 1GB to the classrooms’ Smart
Board interactive whiteboards, computers and projectors and all other desktops
throughout the campus. The solution also involved enhancing network capacity
by increasing the number of available fiber links to each edge location while
ensuring sufficient space was available for future expansion.
The college worked with an HPE authorized channel partner to design, plan and
implement the new network. The new switches integrated seamlessly and were
operational within minutes, minimizing downtime.
