Good Afternoon and welcome to Hampden Park again. Familiar surroundings and familiar opponents today as we welcome Airdrie to the national stadium for the second time in as many weeks. Since our last game with Airdrie we’ve had a tough test against Thistle in the last section of the Betfred Cup and gave a good account of ourselves in our second half performance. After the game we were able to take the first team squad to St Andrews for a few days extra training and we are grateful to the committee for allowing this. We returned on Tuesday Straight to Hampden for our Irn Bru cup game against Kilmarnock Colts. This resulted in an exciting victory and the prospect of another Colt side in the next round where we face Partick Thistle. Enjoy today’s game! Gus MacPherson. Spotlight on 1966-67 In the beginning 13th August 1966 Queens opened the season with their first League Cup group match. Queen Of The South were the visitors to Hampden. The Spiders did not get off to a good start. They took a 5-1 drubbing from the Dumfries side.Queens overall performance deserved a better result. However Goalkeeper G.Wilson had a nightmare game. Actually Queens started well, and Malky MacKay shot them ahead after 3 Minutes. This was the only goal of the First Half. Although only a fine performance by Ball in the QOS goal stopped the home side from adding to their lead. The second half was only 5 Minutes old when the tide began to turn. Wilson was slow to intercept a cross from Alex Law,whose brother Jackie ran in to equalise for the Doonhamers. 10 Minutes later QOS hit a purple patch scoring 3 Goals in 7 Minutes. Collins,Smith and Jackie Law(Again) were the scorers. 2 Of these goals could be put down to mistakes from Wilson. In the last Minute a fine individual goal By McChesney made the final score Queen’s Park 1 Queen Of The South 5. The game was watched by a crowd of just 500. The Queens line up on that opening day was G Wilson, C Gilmour,T Barr,I Robertson,W Neil,E Hunter, Ma Hay,N Hopper,P Conn,I Campbell and M MacKay. The other game in Queens group ended with the scoreline Airdrieonians 3 Dumbarton 0. There were 2 “Inter City Derbies” on this day Celtic beat Hearts 2-0 in Edinburgh and Rangers defeated Hibs in Glasgow. So an Old Firm weegie double was done. Third Lanark began their last ever season with a trip to the seaside at Arbroath. The Hi Hi went down 2-0. No doubt the visiting fans enjoyed a pint in Tutties Neuk and a Fish Supper from the Bell Rock Cafe(Isn’t Arbroath a brilliant away trip!.) A Tayside Derby took place at Tannadice,Dundee United defeated Dundee 20.United deserved their win as they were the more positive of the teams.Persson and Hainey got Their Goals late on. 15,000 fans watched this one. At Kilbowie park the reformed Clyde bank played their first competitive senior game> The local council attended the match,And saw the Bankies grab a 3-0 win over East Stirlingshire. The crowd was 1,500. There were a couple of interesting scores in the Combined Reserve League.Jordanhill college lost 2-0 at home to Hearts Third team, However Glasgow University defeated Rangers Thirds 1-0. And the away matches won’t be on freeto-air TV, you can be sure of that. Worse still would be if they are sold to some obscure satellite channel that is impossible to tap into, as has happened for several away friendlies lately. Frank McCrossan Events Elsewhere on 14 November 1885 Their First Competitive Match Saturday 14 November 1885 -Queen’s Park 1 Airdrieonians 0 It is 146 years since Queen’s Park first took the field against a team from Airdrie. Their opponents then were Airdrie FC, a club consisting of players with an Irish background. Queen’s played Airdrie three times between 1870 and 1872 but the “Hammer Drivers”, as they were known, then went into steady decline. In 1878, a new club called Excelsior FC was formed in Airdrie and soon became the prominent side in the town. In 1881, Excelsior changed their name to Airdrieonians. The first meeting of Airdrieonians and Queen’s Park came in February 1882 when the Spiders’ third team, the Hampden Eleven, visited Airdrie and recorded a 6-1 victory over Airdrieonians first eleven. Three years later, on 14 November 1885, the sides met in a competitive match for the first time. The occasion was a Scottish Cup fourth round tie at the second Hampden Park (later Third Lanark’s New Cathkin Park). Clearly, the Airdrieonians side had improved significantly in the three years since they had been heavily defeated by the Hampden Eleven and the cup tie at Hampden Park was a tight affair. Despite both sides going close on several occasions, an exciting opening half finished goalless. Queen’s Park gradually got on top in the second period but Airdrieonians were very strong defensively, with goalkeeper Connor in top form. The gallant ‘keeper was finally beaten with around 15 minutes to go when William Watt finished off an excellent move involving Jimmy Hamilton and David Allan. The Airdrie men’s resistance had finally been broken and Queen’s Park dominated the remaining minutes of the match. The two sides on that day 130 years ago were: Queen’s Park – George Gillespie; Walter Arnott and Andrew Watson; Charlie Campbell and John Gow; William Watt, John Lambie, Jimmy Hamilton, George Somerville, Robert Christie and David Allan. Airdrieonians – Connor; Reid and Sword; Welsh and Hill; Reid, Stark, Glen, Andrew, Sneddon and Hastings. Queen’s Park beat Arthurlie and Third Lanark in the subsequent rounds of the competition before defeating Renton 3-1 in the final at Cathkin Park to lift the Scottish Cup for the eighth time in the club’s history. A new fire-engine station was opened in Glasgow’s St Enoch Square. It was a wooden structure in the middle of the square, fitted with sleeping accommodation, a lavatory, and a gas stove and cooking utensils for the use of the firemen, who would be on duty for 12 hours at a time. The new station would be in direct telephone communication with the chief station in College Street. A mile race for the Championship of Scotland and a prize of £50 was run on heavy ground in the Cricket Park, Dunfermline. J Martin of Halbeath beat A Young of Falkirk by ten yards in a time of 4 minutes 35 seconds. Glasgow’s Central Police Authorities received a telegram from the Isle of Man on the subject of two young men wanted on a charge of stealing clothes from the lodgings in which they had been staying. It was suspected that they had left Douglas on the Glasgow boat on the Friday night. Two detectives proceeded to Glasgow Harbour to await the arrival of the Isle of Man boat “St Kilda” and captured the young men with the stolen articles in their possession. The men would be handed over to the Isle of Man authorities. A married woman in Bilston near Wolverhampton was ordered to pay 24 shillings and costs for damaging property belonging to the Blue Ribbon Army Band (part of the temperance movement). She had become annoyed when the band persisted in playing in front of her house, with her son being ill in bed at the time. Armed with a knife, she rushed out and ripped up the big drum. A Barnsley football agent met with some rather tough treatment in the Vale of Leven on the Saturday night. He had visited Alexandria on the previous Thursday with the aim of enticing some of the prominent players in the Vale of Leven team to Burnley. He had not succeeded and headed for other football centres. However, he returned on the Saturday evening and was confronted by some of the area’s football enthusiasts. One of the Vale of Leven officials came to his aid and took him by a side road to the railway station. The agent departed on the late train, promising that he would “gang nae merr to yon toun”. Campaigning was in full swing for the 1885 General Election. At Birmingham Police Court, a summons for assault was granted against Walter Showell, the Conservative candidate for Bordesley. At an election meeting on the previous evening, a member of the public had asked the candidate if it was true that he had allowed his mother to be in the workhouse for two years. Rather than answer the man, Showell had struck him on the face Supporters’ Notes Away Travel Due to the rail strike a week on Saturday, we’ll be taking a bus to Stenhousemuir. Keith McAllister hampdenfan@yahoo.co.uk The Visitors – Airdrieonians FC We welcome Airdrieonians to Hampden this afternoon for the opening match of the League One season. Despite the competitive season being little over a fortnight old, this will be the second meeting of the sides already, having met at Hampden in the Betfred Cup 11 days ago. Airdrie kick started their campaign with a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Premiership side Partick Thistle before going down 2-0 against Queen of the South at Palmerston just a few days later. Their fortunes changed in their third game though as they recorded their first win in the competition, beating fellow League One side Stenhousemuir 2-1 at the Excelsior. The recent meeting of the sides ended in a 3-3 draw with Airdrie eventually winning the penalty shoot out to secure themselves a bonus point. The Manager – Eddie Wolecki Black Wolecki was a player in the lower leagues of Scottish football, before becoming a coach at Dundee United under the management of both Jim McLean and Tommy McLean. After coaching stints with Brechin City and Arbroath, Wolecki became manager of Lochee United before moving on to Montrose in December 2005. Wolecki joined women's club Glasgow City as coach for the start of the 2007–08 season. He was later appointed to a full-time position with Glasgow City, becoming the first salaried coach of a women's football team in Scotland. Wolecki left Glasgow City in July 2015, having guided the team to four consecutive league championships. After a brief spell at Edusport Academy, he joined Airdrieonians as the Youth Academy Director of Coaching in September 2015. After Gary Bollan left the club in December 2015, Wolecki was appointed head coach at the Excelsior. Iain Russell (Striker) Russell began his career as a youth player at Annan Athletic and Rangers before making his senior debut with Motherwell in the 2002-03 season. He then went on to play for Dumbarton, Brechin, Greenock Morton, Alloa Athletic, Stirling Albion, Livingston and latterly Queen of the South before signing for Airdrie this year. The veteran striker has scored goals at every club he has played for and will undoubtedly prove a good signing for The Diamonds.
