We appreciate the chance to work with ILIA-member states and provinces
throughout the year, and this year’s conference, “Irons in the Fire,” provides
a special chance for us all to collaborate face to face as we study the problems relating to administration and enforcement of livestock identification
and inspection laws, promote and develop uniform laws and procedures,
and work together to protect against livestock loss and theft.
We look forward to having you here in the great state of North Dakota. If
there is anything we can do for you in preparation for your
visit, don’t hesitate to ask!
Riding for the Brand,

Will Coggin grew up in northern Virginia and, today, is
the director of research at the Center for Consumer Freedom and HumaneWatch.org, where he focuses on animal
rights and environmental issues. He is a frequent critic of
radical activists who seek to take choices away from Americans and to put farmers and ranchers out of business.
While there is no end in sight for these groups’ campaigns
against agriculture, they have taken a few hits in fundraising, public opinion and lobbying in recent times. Coggin
will share some recent developments and information you
need to know as an animal identification professional.
BlaIne noRTHRoP
Blaine Northrop is a North Dakota native who worked
on the state’s brand inspection team for more than
a decade before heading west to become the Nevada
Department of Agriculture’s ag enforcement and brand
inspection supervisor. He oversees the ag enforcement
officers and 90 brand inspectors in the field. Northrop’s
Nevada job has involved some high-profile cases,
including the Bureau of Land Management/Bundy case
and an animal activist takeover that his team needed
to respond to. Northrop will share some of the lessons
he has learned through those experiences to help you
prepare in the event your agency is ever faced with
something like them.

Bob Huskey is the assistant general merchandise manager for beef and pork at Costco Wholesale, where he
has worked for 22 years. He began as a part-time cart
pusher at a store just outside of Seattle, Wa., and later
transferred to Costco’s corporate offices in Issaquah,
Wa., where he began his career in the meat industry.
He started as an hourly reorder clerk and then became
the meat buyer in 2001. Later, he assumed his current
position, overseeing procurement for Costco’s U.S.
fresh beef and pork programs and working with their
international buying groups. He also oversees procurement for Costco’s company-owned ground beef plant
in Tracy, Calif. Huskey will share the role traceability
plays at Costco in helping ensure food safety.
Rodger Huffman is not only the program manager of the
Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Inspection
and Predator Control Division, but he is a long-time member of the International Livestock Identification Association
with unique institutional knowledge of the group. Huffman

Entertainment
All work and no play makes you a dull boy (or girl), so we’ve planned some entertainment so you can kick back, relax and enjoy some of North Dakota’s finest and most
diverse talent while you are in town for the ILIA Conference.

“Mylo Hatzenbuhler” is a very sincere and very silly North Dakota farm boy who thinks
he is the next Elvis Presley. Mylo juggles two
careers, operating the family farm when not
“on the road” wowing his fans with his latest
rock and roll songs. He sings about what he
knows best – cows, chickens, tractors and
wheat – and serenades fans everywhere with
songs like “We Couldn’t Start the Tractor,”
“Hens with Low Faces,” “To All the Cows I’ve
Milked Before” and more. Mixing homespun
humor with music, Mylo promises a memorable Monday evening.
North Dakota sisters Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh combine distinctive talents to comprise
the genre-bending duo Tigirlily. Singing since
they were talking, blending their voices was a
natural step. In a short time, the siblings have
progressed from sharing in church to sharing
the stage with national acts like Big and Rich and Thompson Square and now headlining
their own high-energy, interactive concerts. Tigirlily will perform on Tuesday night.
