Intelligent approach to smart cities
enhances sustainability
Collaboration, integration enable optimised resources and infrastructure
While covering only 2% of the Earth’s surface,
cities house 50% of world population,
account for 80% of global CO2 emissions,
and consume 75% of global energy. More
than 300 million people are predicted to move
to cities over the next 10 years. In newer
economies, this explosive growth will place
even greater demands on resources and
mobility. Aging infrastructure and financial
constraints are already testing the limits
of mature economies. To retain or regain
their attractiveness and competitiveness — to survive — cities need to get smart.
Benefits include energy savings

Intelligent web services enable desk top control of the charging infrastructure and provide
key performance indicators that ensure vehicles are always ready to go.
Energy management capabilities take
electric vehicle charging to the next level
The future of electric vehicle charging
is intelligent production and energy data
As environmental considerations cause
individuals and businesses to increasingly
consider electrical propulsion for a wide‑range
of transportation needs, society is presented
with an outstanding opportunity to reconsider
its expectation of vehicles and the role of
personal mobility. Integrating smart information
technology into electric vehicles and charging
solutions enables a new dimension of safer,
cleaner and more energy efficient e-mobility.
Whether it is a simple matter of locating the
most convenient public charging station,
or the more complex goal of ensuring the
quality of energy used to power vehicles is
always the cleanest and most economical it
can be, information technology is the key.
4
Charging stations are only the beginning
From the outset, EVlink™ electric vehicle
charging solutions from Schneider Electric™
were designed to leverage information
technology to provide energy management
capabilities within a complete, easy-to-use,
turn-key charging infrastructure. This meant
implementing networking capabilities at the
device level, then extending communication,
analytical and control capabilities right up to
the top business management level.
The result is a solution that can intelligently
manage an entire charging infrastructure,
monitor energy use to maximise efficiency, and
supervise users, while integrating with utility
information systems and building management

systems. Acknowledging that information
technology is ever changing, EVlink solutions
are also engineered to make the most of
current technology, while being flexible enough
to accommodate future breakthroughs.
Smart information brings convenience,
efficiency, and flexibility to charging
Electric vehicles have the ability to offer
multiple environmental, cost and maintenance
advantages to users; however, these benefits
are further leveraged when paired with
intelligent web services. For personal use
vehicles, the technology can be deployed on
smart phones and tablets, giving users a wide
range of valuable information such as the
location of charging terminals, the charging
schedule, and the real-time cost of energy
supplying the charge.
Future innovations envisage features like
continuous, remote updates about the level
of a vehicle’s battery and the distance a
vehicle can travel with its current charge.
It’s with this kind of information that the
users of personal electric vehicle drivers can
optimise their charging for both maximum
cost‑effectiveness and convenience.
EVlink remote control and
management system
For organisations that run fleets of electric
vehicles, intelligent web services can
provide information that enables them to
save time and effort by remotely managing
their charging infrastructure, automate their
fleet’s charging based on delivery schedules,
priority, travel distance and other factors.
Parking facility operators can manage
integrated payment systems, monitor
charging spot occupancy, analyse charging
profiles, and control terminal on/off/lock
status remotely or from their workstation.
Advanced energy management makes the
most of precious resources
Web services can also help any electric
vehicle operator make smarter choices
about selecting the most economical
charging periods, when surplus power
is available or demand is low. They can
easily program parameters into the system
so it will vary the intensity and time that
power is delivered to their vehicle in order
to align the cost of charging with their
anticipated mobility needs.

Now, progress in solar photovoltaic generation
Advanced research station tests innovative concepts
The solar farm utilises Schneider Electric solar inverters and produces enough clean energy to power over 65 homes.
Schneider Electric™ embraces solar generation
as one of the most environmentally friendly
renewable energy sources. Schneider Electric
Engineering Services (SEES) has recently
designed and built a photovoltaic (PV) field and
generating station at its Smyrna, Tennessee
manufacturing facility for the purpose of testing
new technologies. Designed to produce
1,300,000 kWh of solar electricity annually,
the site is calculated to save 1600 barrels of
crude oil in avoided emissions.
According to Edwin Willhite, Schneider Electric
Regional Facilities Manager for the Southeast
US, the Smyrna facility occupies 18,580 m2
(200,000 square feet) of office, laboratory, and
manufacturing space. ‘We have about 400
people and work a two shift manufacturing
operation. The solar farm can produce
enough power to offset 25% of our total
power requirement. Based on the incentives it
provides enough revenue to offset about 50%
of our electricity bill. We receive this credit
each month’.
First dual voltage solar farm
The 2.42 hectare (6 acre) solar farm utilises
Schneider Electric solar inverters and
produces enough clean energy to power over
65 homes. The site is also the first dual voltage
solar farm in the United States capable of
operation at 600 or 1000 Volts DC.
PV fields in the US are commonly rated at
less than 600 Volts. But technology is rapidly
developing for inverters operating at higher
DC voltages which provide more efficient DC
power distribution. Energy output was routed
through a DC switchboard, allowing the DC
field to connect to inverters with different
power ratings.
Designed to produce
1.3 million kWh of
solar electricity
annually, the site
is calculated to
save 1600 barrels
of crude oil in
avoided emissions.
‘Inverters are the heart of this PV system
and they convert the DC electricity to AC so
it can be readily used. This energy conversion
is accomplished by rapid switching of power
electronics to create a stable 60 Hz electrical
output that matches the utility grid’s supply’,
said Willhite.

China’s Ruiping Power Plant partnered with Schneider Electric to meet demanding energy-saving and emission-reduction targets.
EcoStruxure architecture enables E1.65
million in savings for Chinese power plant
The 1.5 billion kW Ruiping Power Plant partners with
Schneider Electric to optimize for a low-energy future
The Ruiping Power Plant is a China‑based
electricity supplier in Henan province
producing 1.5 billion kW of steam‑generated
energy each year. As part of the China
Pingmei Shenma Energy & Chemical
Group Co., Ltd. — a Top 100 Enterprise in
China — the Ruiping Power Plant is charged
with meeting China’s demanding national
energy-saving and emission-reduction targets.
The Ruiping executive management team
required the ability to see, measure, and
manage energy use across the power
plant. The simple and powerful idea offered
by Schneider Electric™ of using resources
more productively and efficiently in order to
increase profits and lower the impact on the
12
environment, appealed to the team. The team
selected Schneider Electric as their partner of
choice to take on the full responsibility
of process and energy management.
Financial savings exceed expectations
The process and energy management upgrade,
which is supported by a Schneider Electric
EcoStruxure architecture implementation,
currently generates an annual savings of
27 million kW per year of direct electricity,
(E996,000 in electrical savings) It also saves
around 7,735 tonnes of standard coal, valued
at E659,000 and equals a carbon dioxide
(CO2) emission reduction of over 20,265 tonnes.
The overall benefit for the Ruiping Power Plant
is E1,655,000 per year.

For Li Zhigang, General Manager of the
Ruiping Power Plant, the partnership with
Schneider Electric was a logical decision:
‘We chose Schneider Electric because of the
advanced energy efficiency concepts and
the reliable technical solutions that they offer.
There are not many companies like Schneider
Electric in the market that can implement
specific, practical solutions.’
Electrical consumption, coal
consumption reduced
Schneider Electric energy efficiency experts
first performed an audit and an analysis of
power consumption. Inefficiencies in energy
management were then identified and targeted.
‘We decided to focus on three major energy
inefficiencies discovered in the audit,’ explains
Li Zhigang. ‘Our overall plant electricity
consumption rate was too high, there was a
significant air leakage rate from our turbine,
and we needed to significantly lower the
temperature of the air, captured with the fly
ash, by our electrostatic precipitator (ESP).’
‘The Schneider Electric EcoStruxure platform
was applied at the Ruiping Power Plant for
both the Phase I and Phase II transformation
projects,’ explained Sui Wei, Energy
Efficiency Solution Manager at Schneider
Electric, China. ‘The platform provides
real-time information on the results of the
transformation allowing Ruiping Power Plant
to identify areas for improvement, not only at
their own plant, but in the power industry as
a whole.’
The Schneider Electric solution leveraged
several energy saving technologies to
improve the plant’s energy efficiency.
The Energy Management System provided
a simple tool for capturing and tracking
KPIs, for monitoring carbon emissions,
and for identifying new energy saving
potential. For Li Zhanzhou, Production and
Technology Manager at Ruiping Power Plant,
the Schneider Electric solution provided
the tools to manage the escalating cost
of coal: ‘Schneider Electric helped us
to integrate several energy saving
technologies and synergize the effects.
Our plant can now provide electricity
with less coal consumption, and that’s
a cost saving for us.’
‘With the Energy Management System,
we not only track the energy saving
effects, but also manage our entire energy
consumption situation. This technology
provides us with innovative ways to run our
operation’, explains Li Zhigang.
‘Schneider Electric provided a unique
advantage because they offered a total
solution for our entire operation. The
Ruiping Power Plant solution is another
success story for Schneider Electric,’
concludes Li Zhigang.

How eco-friendly Green Premium products
help meet or exceed compliance regulations
‘...companies must
consider the item’s
environmental
impact, including
regulatory
compliance’
As environmental awareness builds in
the corporate world, implementing green
business practices has shifted from optional
to imperative. Greenhouse gas emissions,
reliable access to raw materials, and biohazardous substances are all becoming
‘material risk factors that warrant scrutiny
by shareholders, customers, and regulators’,
according to www.GreenBiz.com in its fifth
annual State of Green Business Report.
‘Growing calls for transparency and disclosure
of sustainability impacts are requiring more, and
more reliable, information about increasingly
deeper levels of company operations and
supply chains’, the website reports. Now,
with every purchase made or product
shipped, companies must consider the item’s
environmental impact, including regulatory
compliance, recyclability, and end of life
disposal. It’s a daunting task. Green Premium™
products are a good place to start.
Comprehensive information;
internationally accepted standards
Created by Schneider Electric™ for many of its
products, Green Premium labeling consists
of a simple ‘eco-mark’ backed by a wealth
of comprehensive environmental information.
Every Green Premium product has been
evaluated for regulatory compliance and more,
using clearly defined criteria and internationally
accepted standards. Using the unique ‘Check
a Product’ tool on the Schneider Electric
website, customers can easily access critical
product data such as:
> Compliance with RoHS (Restriction of
Hazardous Substances) requirements
> Bill of Material, Recyclability Rate, and EoLI
TMCY-8RKQ6K
(End of Life Instruction) where relevant
‘Check a Product’ provides a complete
environmental information overview and
data for every Green Premium product.
> SVHC (Substances of Very High
Concern) content as defined by REACh
(Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation
and Restriction of Chemicals)
> PEP (Product Environmental Profile),
including carbon footprint and energy
consumption for all product lifecycle phases.
Benefits include carbon footprint and
compliance data
Now customers can quickly and confidently
calculate carbon footprint, determine
regulatory compliance regarding hazardous
substances and chemicals, deliver necessary
information for the design of eco-friendly
solutions, and reduce end of life product
costs by optimising recyclability. Today
two-thirds of Schneider Electric product
revenues are realised with Green Premium
products. Schneider Electric has pledged
to increase that number, reinforcing its
commitment to biodiversity and a healthier,
more sustainable planet.

energy you are consuming so you can discover
opportunities to improve your efficiency.
Up to now, adding metering at multiple
locations represented a significant investment,
due to the cost of each meter, other
associated components, and installation time.
Schneider Electric™ now offers a simpler and
more affordable alternative. The Micrologic™ E
control unit is a new option for the Compact™
NS and Masterpact™ NT/NW ranges of circuit
breakers. Beyond its core protective functions,
the Micrologic E offers integrated power and

Customer Story
High-efficiency buildings offset their consumption through renewable energy production.
New office building consumes
less energy than it produces
Exprimm and Schneider Electric design innovative
building management system
A quiet revolution is occurring within the
buildings industry. The need to accommodate
more stringent environmental and economic
requirements is impacting building design and
the overall business of building managers.
These changes are resulting in lower energy
consumption, and more comfortable and
healthy working conditions for building
occupants.
‘As a building manager, the tools we use
and the teams we deploy, are changing fast’,
says Laurent Lebouchard, energy efficiency
director for Exprimm, building manager for
the first ‘Green Office’ building built in France
by Bouygues Immobilier. ‘We are involved
in the design, construction and test phases
of the project. We often specify the building
management and operating systems’. 18
The rise of the energy performance
contract
The ‘Green Office’ building in Meudon, France,
equipped with Schneider Electric™ energy
efficiency solutions, is a 23,300 m2 (250,799
square feet) building which produces more
energy than it consumes.
‘We signed an energy performance contract
and made a commitment to guarantee a cap
on the energy bill our occupants would be
required to pay’, explains Lebouchard. ‘This
represents true innovation for the private
buildings sector, especially since it was
signed when the building was still only on
the drawing board. The contract covers the
maintenance and control of the facilities
as well as the energy bill. We guarantee a
maximum consumption of 62 kWh/m2/year

Director, Exprimm
offset by energy production of 64 kWh.
If any overconsumption occurs as a result
of inefficient management, we reimburse
the occupants the difference’.
Schneider Electric tools facilitate the
management task
‘Our main tool is the Schneider Electric
centralised building management system,
which controls all of our facilities. By gathering
data (weather data, occupation rate, hours of
operation, indoor temperature, etc.), the system
optimises key systems such as lighting, heating,
and ventilation. Our system also manages
equipment maintenance, and receives requests
for repair from the occupants’.
Support of the occupants is an essential
aspect of energy performance. ‘It depends,
to a large extent, on how the occupant uses
the building’, confirms Lebouchard. ‘This is
why we communicate to occupants about
eco-responsibility, sometimes with simple
reminders such as opening or closing
windows when appropriate’. Building management personnel become
energy efficiency specialists
The changing nature of building operations
requires a migration of roles for those who
support the building occupants. ‘While facilitiesrelated equipment and technology become
simpler to operate, the complexity transfers to
how the integrated facility is controlled. Building
management teams are now more ‘white collar’
than ‘blue collar’, and have acquired the skills
that make them energy efficiency specialists’,
says Lebouchard.
In another major change, new high-efficiency
buildings will offset their consumption through
renewable energy production. ‘This is a new
emphasis for us’, says Lebouchard. ‘Our
teams will need to learn new skills for operating
and maintaining photovoltaic systems and
mini power stations, and for delivering the right
quantity of energy when needed’.
The Meudon ‘Green Office’: ‘A challenge we embraced for the good of our planet’
– Laurent Lebouchard, Exprimm
The Meudon ‘Green Office’ building is a
perfect example; the building is equipped
with a biomass cogeneration boiler fuelled by
rapeseed oil (canola oil). ‘To avoid having to
transport rapeseed oil from the other end of
the world, which would increase the carbon
footprint, contract specifications stipulate
procurement within a radius of 170 kilometres’
says Lebouchard. ‘We contacted all the
regional producers and were successful in
procuring local supplies. This was a new
challenge but one that we embraced for the
good of our efficient enterprise and the good
of our planet’.
