Pharmaceutical manufacturers can safely eliminate energy waste without compromising compliance or quality using Schneider Electric energy
management solutions.
This four-step process improves energy
efficiency in pharmaceutical manufacturing
BHEN-948JZP_GB
Achieving an active
energy management
model starts with
data collection.
8
Up against stiff competition and pressure
to make product pipelines deliver,
pharmaceutical manufacturers need
flawless performance in every facet of their
organization, including energy systems.
Why energy efficiency is so important
Addressing rising energy costs is an
immediate issue. And as energy
becomes more expensive, governments
are enforcing carbon taxation and
energy levies that create indirect costs
associated with energy consumption.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing, like so many
industries, is facing increasing pressure
for social and environmental corporate
responsibility. Implementing an energy
management programme is a strategic way
Intelligent Energy • www.SEreply.com • 1-800-880-877
to control these costs, improve overall
efficiency, and be seen as a good
global citizen.
Introducing the energy management
life cycle
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, maintaining
critical environments and the associated
energy use represents both significant
operational costs and a mandatory
investment in quality and compliance.
Successful energy management programmes
follow this four-part life cycle approach:
1. Audit and measure energy use
2. Fix the basics
3. Optimize through automation and regulation
4. Monitor, maintain, and improve
1
First step: audit and measure
energy use
Achieving an active energy management
model starts with data collection.
Pharmaceutical plants should monitor all
utility types—gas, electricity, steam, hot and
chilled water, and compressed air—each with
associated energy costs and CO2 footprint.
By gathering accurate and relevant information
through metering and audits, a foundation for
an effective plan is created.
2
Second step: fix the basics
The next step is to use that data to
reduce energy waste. Many pharmaceutical
plants start by using passive energy efficiency
measures to reduce losses from energyconsuming devices. This can be accomplished
through low-energy lighting, low-loss
transformers, and high-efficiency motors.
Energy management programmes must also
address people’s activities and actions that
impact energy consumption. Awareness
programmes, incentive contests, and formal
training are all valuable ways to engage
occupants and earn their cooperation.
3
Third step: optimize through
automation and regulation
Passive measures alone are not fully effective.
For example, a high-efficiency motor without
appropriate control will not be optimized.
Automated control of speed can deliver
significant additional savings.
Active energy reduction can be particularly
challenging in pharmaceutical manufacturing,
where maintaining the proper environment
is critical to product quality and compliance.
However, with careful measuring and auditing, it’s
possible to find energy waste that can be safely
eliminated without harming compliance or quality.
Sometimes basic maintenance can yield
significant benefits. For example, during a walk
through audit, an air handling unit heating valve
found to be stuck open was calculated to be
wasting €7,500 a year. The cost of replacing
the valve is less than €1,200. Despite the
energy waste, there had been no complaints or
problems with maintaining conditions.
4
Finally: monitor and maintain
for continuous improvement
While robust automation and control can
deliver up to 30 per cent energy savings,
evidence suggests that 8 per cent of these
savings are lost annually without appropriate
monitoring and maintenance.
To ensure the continuing efficacy of a facility’s
energy systems, management must commit to
a vigorous programme of actively monitoring
data from the plant, analyzing and identifying
anomalies, and then acting upon this
information in a timely way.
30%
30 per cent energy
savings with robust
automation and
control
8%
8 per cent of those
savings lost without
monitoring and
maintenance
Getting to the next level
Pharmaceutical plants striving to excel in energy
efficiency, whether for cost savings or meeting
environmental goals, will reach a point when
significant capital expenditure is necessary. This
can include higher efficiency chillers or boilers, a
combined heat and power plant, or renewable
energy generation technology.
Energy demand reduction strategies and
measures are essential to ensure these
significant CapEx decisions are based
on optimized and sustainable plant loads.
In this way, unnecessary CapEx can be
avoided and companies can realize predicted
investment benefits.

Hot Topics/Market Trends
Building smart integrated energy systems for cities is a core Schneider Electric value.
How to launch a Smart Cities initiative
5-step approach makes cities more efficient, livable, and sustainable
70%
In the next 40 years,
70% of the planet
will be living in cities.
In the next 40 years, 70% of the planet
will be living in cities. Such explosive
growth presents challenges to existing city
infrastructures. Systems that traditionally
have operated in stand-alone silos—electric
grids, gas and water distribution, wastewater
treatment, public and private transportation,
commercial buildings, hospitals, homes—
must become integrated to create more
efficient, livable, and sustainable cities.
Get started: 5-step practical approach
Smart Cities start with smart systems. The
Schneider Electric™ methodology combines
a bottom-up, systems-centric approach with
top-down, data-driven actionable intelligence.
> Step 1: Setting the vision Collaboration
BHEN-96ENW7_GB
is essential for Smart City development.
Everyone—municipal governments, the
private sector, and citizens—needs to
develop and buy into a shared vision of
their future city.
> Step 2: Choosing the right
technology Cities must prioritize their
pain points, identifying which ones
need immediate attention. Then they
should engage an energy management
partner to assess requirements and
make recommendations for the most
appropriate technology.
10
Intelligent Energy • www.SEreply.com • 1-800-880-877
> Step 3: Integrating the systems System
architectures must facilitate data
capture, sharing, and analysis to improve
performance. Gathering system data
from the bottom up (from smart meters,
for example), and then harnessing it for
analysis from the top down (via software
dashboards), enables cities to make
informed and accurate decisions.
> Step 4: Leveraging innovative
business models Tools like energy
savings performance contracts allow
cities to fund improvements without a
large, up-front cash investment.
> Step 5: Driving collaboration Cities must
insist that technology and energy partners
work in a collaborative manner to build
the most valuable long-term solutions.
Each city faces its own unique set of challenges.
There is no ‘one size fits all’ blueprint. But
following this 5-step approach based on

or OEM, you need to ensure that electrical
installations will not overheat.
The peak rating of most electrical and
electronic equipment is much lower, so
reducing overheated enclosure temperatures
pays big cost dividends. In industries like
metalworking, glassworks, or automotive
for instance, just one hour of downtime can
run into many thousands of euros, or even
millions. The human toll can be high too,
particularly if critical transportation or safety
infrastructure applications fail.
BHEN-95HRPH_GB
Optimizing temperature is the key
Both high and low temperatures directly
affect the reliability and service life of vital
equipment. Even an apparatus that doesn’t
fail will experience a shorter service life. If,
for example, the operating temperature of a
variable speed drive rises by 15°C, its lifetime
will be three times shorter. And clustered
variable speed drives can push operating
temperatures up to 70°C.
What’s more, significant temperature swings
in recent years have subjected devices and
systems to additional extremes in shorter
periods of time. Such variations can seriously
impair the reliability and effectiveness of
equipment — particularly temperature-sensitive
components like batteries. In a nutshell, when
electric installations and devices housed in
control panels shut down or malfunction,
it is almost always a thermal issue caused
by high temperatures.

Customer Story
Now reinvest savings in healthcare services
How Regionservice partnered with Schneider Electric
for ¤2.1 million annual savings
‘
By working with
Schneider Electric,
we have in a short
time been able to
carry out extensive
improvements;
improvements that
the organization
would never have
been capable of
on its own’.
– Jonas Larsson
Energy Strategist
Regionservice
High maintenance costs, rising energy prices,
and aging infrastructures can all have an
impact on the quality of services delivered
by hospitals and clinics. Regionservice, the
organization that manages 31 healthcare
facilities across approximately 1.5 million
square metres across Region Skåne in
Sweden, is no stranger to these challenges.
That’s why they turned to Schneider Electric™
to develop a strategy that:
> Tackled energy and maintenance costs
> Reversed negative cost trends for its
aging property portfolio
> Reduced energy consumption through
better meter structuring and energy
monitoring
The promise of energy savings
Regionservice commissioned Schneider
Electric in 2003 to uncover energy savings
opportunities. The initial findings were
promising. So they partnered with Schneider
Electric to upgrade 11 buildings, including
Lund University Hospital, a 135,000 square
metre facility and the largest property in
the project. The next phase of the project
covered an additional 20 buildings.
‘By working with Schneider Electric, we
have in a short time been able to carry out
extensive improvements; improvements that
the organization would never have been
capable of on its own’, says Jonas Larsson,
Energy Strategist at Regionservice.
BHEN-952LL5_GB
Schneider Electric has guaranteed 85% of
estimated heat savings for these EPC (Energy
Performance Contracting) projects. Major
updates in the first phase included:
> Installation of new heat recuperation unit
in the ventilation systems
> Refurbishing of district heating sub-stations

Intelligent Energy • www.SEreply.com • 1-800-880-877
Properties managed by Regionservice serve as prime
examples of energy efficiency to other regions.
> Replacement of valves and actuators
and installation of new meters
> Installation of water saving nozzles at
tap outlets
> Improvements to lighting efficiency
using fluorescent lamps with voltage
reduction systems
> Training of maintenance personnel
In the end, three buildings became
GreenBuilding-certified. And the energy project
helped to improve indoor climate, reduce
maintenance costs, and deliver annual savings
of approximately €2.1 million which is now
reinvested in healthcare services.
Today, properties managed by Regionservice
are visited by representatives of other regions
seeking to learn more about energy savings.
