The Problem
In 2006, Edmonton had the highest rate of Injuries per 1000 population than any
Major Canadian City.
In 2012, the last year where data is available for comparison cities, Edmonton has
seen a significant reduction in injuries, yet remains tied with Toronto with the highest
# of injuries per 1000 population

 The City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety will:
Reduce the prevalence of fatal, injury, and
property damage collisions through the 5 E’s of
traffic safety (Engineering, Enforcement,
Education, Evaluation and Engagement) by
improving
 urban traffic safety engineering
 speed management and traffic enforcement
 road user behaviour
 data, business intelligence and analytics
 two-way communications
 Focus on urban traffic safety through evidence-based approaches by
using state of art methodologies.

Road Safety Strategy (RSS)
2015-2020
• The RSS will continue to build on the joint Police and
Transportation work done to date in Traffic Safety
• The RSS will utilize the safe systems approach
• Safer roads and roadways
• Safer speeds
• Safer Vehicles and drivers
• The RSS will continue to move Edmonton closer towards
Vision Zero, zero fatalities and injuries from motor vehicle
collisions
• The RSS will incorporate the 5E’s of engineering, enforcement,
evaluation, education, and engagement
• The RSS will identify corporate collision reduction targets and
strategies to mitigate fatal and injury collisions
• The RSS will be supported by operational and capital budgets
• The RSS will be presented to Transportation Committee on the
27 May, 2015
