Kirlin Type IC Fixtures:
Recessed Shallow Plenum up to 200 Watt Incandescent or 42 Watt CF
Type IC rated fixtures are designed to be totally covered with insulation when installed. The
advantage of Type IC fixtures is that they provide tremendous cost advantages for the end user:
1. IC rated fixtures are cheaper to install as barriers to keep the insulation 3"
away from the fixture are not required.
2. Heating and air conditioning cost for the life of the job are minimized as there
is no thermal loss around the fixture.
Several years ago the Johns-Manville Corporation Research and Development Center commissioned the U.S. Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory to run a series of tests on the "Effectiveness
of Building Insulation Applications". The two tests consisted of installing Type IC and non-Type IC
12" square recessed fixtures in a 10' x 10' room.
First they conducted heat loss tests with the non-Type IC fixtures installed in accordance with NEC
requirements. (See the next page for details of the installation.) Next they changed the installation
and conducted the same tests using two Type IC fixtures, also properly installed. The results of
these tests showed that "with a 4.2% uninsulated area, the thermal performance of an R19
insulated ceiling was reduced 34%".
In other words, heat loss increased 50% with only 4% uninsulated ceiling area.
With the cost of energy today, and the fact that Kirlin's Type IC products cost approximately the
same as other non-Type IC products, a "locked spec" can result if Kirlin's Type IC products are
specified.
Kirlin has dozens of Compact Fluorescent, Tungsten Halogen and Incandescent Type IC products
available, including RS21249, a 200 watt Type IC downlight, which we believe is the highest
wattage Type IC product U.L. has ever approved!
