Withspringintheairandthesnowprettymuchgone.Ican’tremembereverhaving
suchamildwinterhereinNorthDakota.It’sthattimeofyeartobethinkingabout
gettingyourleaguesstartedandgettingnewmemberstosignupforthepitching
leagues.
Justareminderforeveryone(andIknowyouhaveheardmesaythisbefore)thatitis
“all”ofourresponsibilitytogetoutthereandsignupnewmemberstopitchthis
season.Mysellingpitchhasalwaysbeenit’safamilysportwhereeveryonecan
participate,yougettoplayoutdoors,inadditiontogettingsomeexercise,yougetto
meetnewfriendsandcreatenewrelationships,andwherecanyoufindasportthatis
soreasonabletoparticipatein.Pleasetryanddoyourpartandgrowyourclubs.
CongratulationstoBobDunnandCliveWahlin(deceased)whowillbeinductedintothe
NationalHorseshoePitchingAssociationHallofFame.BobDunnwillbeinductedinto
thecategoryof“Promoter/Organizer”,andCliveWahlinwillbeinductedintothe
“HistoricEraPlayer”.TheHallofFameinductionwillbeheldatthe2016World
HorseshoeTournamentatMontgomery,AL.Congratulationstothesetwodeserving
individuals.TheNHPACouncilwouldliketothankVickiWinstonforthegreatjobsheis
doingdirectingtheHOFCommittee.
Thisyearattheconvention,therewillbenoby-Laworruleschangestovoteon.
However,itisourintentionstodiscussourNHPAfinancials.Asmostofyouknow,who
havebeeninvolvedinpastdelegatemeetingsattheworldtournament,ourfinancials
haveslowlydwindleddowntoapointwhereweneedtomakesomechanges.Pretty
muchallofourincomecomesfromthemembershipdues.Eachyearournumbershave
beenslowlydecreasingwhilethecostofdoingbusinesshasrisensignificantly.
IwouldlikeallofyoutoknowthattheNHPACouncilhasbeenworkinghardat
controllingcostandincreasingmembership.However,thenumbershavereflected
differently.TheNHPACouncilwillbeproposingaduesincreaseattheconvention.Itis
myintentiontospendsometimediscussingandgoingoverthefinancialsjustifyingan
increaseandhopetocometoaconsensusonthedollaramount.Againthisisonlya
proposal.
Anothertopicontheagendaattheconventionistheelectionof1st&3rdVicePresident
Positions.Forthepositionof1stVP,DanSandershasdecidednottorunforanother
term,howeverwehavethreecandidatesthathavemettherequirementsofourByLawsandwillbecampaigningforthispositionatMontgomery.TheyincludeMichael
TaylorfromNebraska;GaryRobertsformOhio,andWayneSaulsburyfromDelaware.
TheNHPACouncilwisheseachofthesecandidatesthebestofluck.Abioofeachis
includedinthisissueofNewsline.

NHPAmembers,April1stwasthedeadline.SinceApril1sthaspassed,Iannouncethat
therearenoothercandidatesrunningforthepositionof3rdVicePresident.
The2016WorldHorseshoeTournamentwillbeheldJuly25–August6,2016in
Montgomery,AL.Thehostsite,theMultiplexlocatedattheCramptonBowlisinthecity
limitsandclosetodowntownMontgomery.Thedeadlineforsubmittingyourentryis

Pleasebesure,whensubmittingyourentry,youareregisteringintheproperdivision.
ParentsofCadetandJuniorpitchers,thisisespeciallyimportantsoyourchildwillnotbe

TheCouncilwouldliketothankalltheCharterswhoprovidednominationlettersfor

TheCouncilispleasedtoannouncethreesitesthatwillbebiddingtohostthe2018
WorldTournament.Thesesitesinclude:1)ElPaso,TX,2)FlorenceSC,and3)
Shreveport–Bossier,LA.DaveSidles,TinaHawkinsandBillMarvinperformedsitevisits.
TheirarticlesareincludedinthisissueofNewsline.Thesethreebiddingsiteswillbe
hostingabooththefirstweekduringthe2016WorldTournamentinMontgomeryand
willbegivingaformalpresentationattheconvention.PerourBy-laws,votingisbased
onasimplemajorityandonlyonewinnerwillbeannounced.TheCouncilwouldliketo
thankthesethreesitesfortheirinterestinhostingourgrandevent.Welookforwardto

TheHallofFameCommitteehascompletedthe2016votingprocessand,asI
announcedrecentlyintheHallofFamecategoryontheNHPAForum,wehaveelected
twoindividualswhowillbeinductedintotheNHPAHallofFameduringtheHallofFame
andAwardsBanquettobeheldinMontgomery,AlabamaonSundayevening,July31st.
InthePromoter/OrganizerCategorywehaveelectedamanwhosenamewillbe
recognizedbymanypeopleinthehorseshoeworld.Itwasanenjoyableexperienceto
beabletotelephoneBobDunnonemorningandsurprisehimwiththenews.
BobisacurrentmemberoftheHallofFamecommittee,soImust
tellyouthatacommitteememberisneverallowedtocastany
votesinacategorywheretheirownname,orthatofafamily
member,appearsontheballot.
BobresidesinBrooklyn,Minnesotaanditwouldtakeaverylong
articletotellyouallofhiscontributionstothesportofhorseshoe
pitching.Therefore,Iwillmentionjustafewofthemthatpertain
mostlytowhathehasdoneonthenationallevel.Hehasalsobeen
involvedinmanyprojectsontheMinnesotacharterlevel,wherehefirstbecame
involvedwithoursport.However,itwasn’tlonguntilhewasalsogettinginvolvedon
thenationallevelandworkedtopromotetheNHPASanctionedClub/LeagueProgram.
ThisearnedhimanNHPAAchievementAwardin1990.HesuggestedtothenNHPA
President,DaveLoucks,thatthereshouldbeJuniorPromotionDirectorandBobwas
appointedtotheposition.HisworkinthatpositionearnedhimtheNHPAPresidential
Awardin1995.
AsJuniorPromotionDirector,BobwasintowritingvariousarticlesforNewslineand
hadbecomeinvolvedinhorseshoecollectingandtrading.Hesoonbecamerecognized
assomewhatofanexpertinthefieldofantiquehorseshoes.Hewaskeepingarosterof
over80collectorsandtradersandhesentoutayearlynewslettertoeveryoneonthe
list.Thenewsletterincludedinventoriesofallcollectorswhofurnishedthatinformation
toBob.Hiscollectionofhorseshoesgrewtoover350differentshoes,whichheproudly
displayedatseveralWorldTournaments.ForhiscontinuedservicetotheNHPA,Bob
waschosentoreceivethecovetedStokesAwardin1998.

WhenaHallofFamebuildingbecameareality,muchofBob’shorseshoecollectionwas
donatedtotheNHPAandisondisplayattheHallofFameinWentzville,MO.When
GaryKlinepassedawayin2008,NHPAPresident,PaulStewart,appointedBobDunnas
theNHPAHistorian.Bob’sloveofthehistoryofoursportmadehimanaturalforthis
position,ashehadbeendoingmuchresearchandwritingarticlesandbooksinvolving
thehistoryofthesportforquitesometime.Hejumpedrightinandbeganassisting
withthedesignofandprovidinginformationforvariousdisplaysattheHallofFame.He
alsoassistedwiththeinventoryprocessofitemscontainedinthearchivesattheHallof
Famefacility.
HehastraveledmanytimesfromMinnesotatoMissouritocontinuehiswork.He
workedmanyhourstocatalogcontentsofthevariousDVD’sthatareavailablefor
viewingintheWinstonTheater.Hehasalsocontinuedtowritebooks,thelargestbeing
a650-pagebookentitled“WorldChampionsofHorseshoePitching1920-2010.”This
bookcoversthewomen’s,juniorsandallWorldTournamentdivisionsthatwerenot
coveredduringthattimeperiodinGaryKline’sbook.Hehaswrittenandpublished
“AAUNationalAmateurHorseshoePitchingChampionships”and“TheLeeRoseStory.”
Asofthiswriting,thereareyetmorebooksinprogress.Hisinterestinthehistoryofour
sportneverceasesandheismostdeservingofthehighhonorthathasbeenbestowed
uponhimthisyear.

Wahlin,whowasontheballotintheHistoricEraPlayer
Category.ClivelivedinUtahandwasstillalivewhenthe
WorldTournamentwasheldinSt.George,UTin2013.
However,hewasgettingupinyearsandhassince
passedaway.
TheStateofUtahwasveryproudofhimandalife-sized
photoofClivewasdisplayedattheirboothduringthe
2013WorldTournament.ClivewasbornMay24,1928
andlearnedthesportofhorseshoepitchingfromhis
father.Asluckwouldhaveit,theWorldTournament
washeldfor11consecutiveyearsinMurray,UTduring
theyearswhenClivewasbeginninghispitchingcareer.
Thiscreatedanincentiveforhimtogetinvolvedonahigherlevel.Hequalifiedforhis
firstMen’sChampionshipClassin1954andwouldgoontocompetein8more.He
pitchedintheMen’sChampionshipClassinMurrayfrom1954through1959andagain
in1966whenthetournamentreturnedtoMurrayforoneyear.In1963and1964he
didtraveloutofstateandalsoqualifiedfortheMen’sChampionshipClassbothofthose
years.HequalifiedfortheMen’sChampionshipClasseveryyearthatheattendedthe
WorldTournament.Hishighestfinishwas4thplacein1958,buthishighestWTaverage
wasin1957whenheaveraged80.16%for30games.Thatyearhewastiedwiththe
greatFernandoIsaisforhighqualifyingscore.Hehad546pointswith175ringersoutof
200shoesforan87.5%ringeraverage.

CliveparticipatedintheGreatestWorldTournamentofalltime(1964)when14players
outofthe36participantsaveragedover80%.Hewasnotoneofthem,asheaveraged
76.12%thatyear,buthedidhaveawinningrecordof20-15,whichputhimin17th
placeinthefieldof36men.OfthenineWorldTournamentsCliveattended,hefinished
inthetop10fourtimesandhasaringeraverageof74.63%forthosenineevents.
Clivewasalsoverysuccessfulonthestatelevelandduringa26yearperiod,hewasthe
UtahMen’sStateChampionatotalof16times.Forhispitchingaccomplishments,Clive
WahlinwasinductedintotheUtahHallofFamein1977.
IwasabletomakecontactwithoneofClive’ssons,BrianWahlin,andhewasvery
excitedtolearnofhisfather’selectiontotheNHPAHallofFame.AtthetimeItalked
withhim,heindicatedthathewascertainthatsomefamilymemberswouldtravelto
Montgomery,ALtoattendtheinductionceremony.IfIamabletoattend,Iwilllook
forwardtomeetingthem.IhavebeenaroundlongenoughthatIdidseeClivepitch
severaltimes.

IwillworkwiththeNHPAWebmastertogetthelistofnomineesupdated.Youcanfind

TheShreveport-BossierSportsCommissionproposestoholdthe2018NHPAWorld
HorseshoeTournamentJuly30–August11,2018,attheShreveportConventionCenter,
a350,000squarefootmulti-purposefacility.Theproposalwillincludea60,000sq.ft.,
column-freeexhibithallwithconcretefloors.
TheShreveportHorseshoeClubmaintainsasetof12up-to-date,outdoorpitching
courtsattheMooseLodge,lessthan20minutesfromtheConventionCenter.These
courtswillbeavailableforpracticeduringtheproposedtournamentdates.Theclub
planstoassistwiththebiddingefforts,aswellaswiththetournament,ifShreveportBossierissuccessfulinthevote.
Therearemorethan1,000hotelroomslessthanonemilefromtheConventionCenter,
includingtheattachedShreveportHilton,whichwouldbethehosthotelandthenearby
Sam’sTownHotelandCasino–thefirstoverflowproperty,whichcouldalsobean
optionfortheHallofFamebanquetlocation.Otherpossiblebanquetvenuesinclude
theShreveportMunicipalAuditorium,siteofthe“LouisianaHayride,”whereElvis
Presleylaunchedhiscareer!
TheConventionCenterislocatedjustblocksfromrestaurantsandclubsintheRedRiver

Iwasbornintoahorseshoepitchingfamily,andpitching
hasbeenapartofmylifesinceIwastenyearsold.Iwon
theWorldJuniorChampionshipfourconsecutiveyears,and
IhavepitchedintheMen’sChampionshipDivisiononmany
occasions.IwasalsofortunateenoughtowintheOhio
StateChampionshipin1981.
In2012,IwasawardedtheArchStokesMemorialAward
becauseofmyinternationalpromotionofhorseshoesin
SouthAfricaandNamibia,andbecauseofmymanyyearsofexhibitionpitching.
In2013,IwasinductedintotheNHPAHallofFamebecauseofmypromotional
activities.IamalsoamemberoftheOhioHallofFame.
Horseshoepitchinghasbeenrewardingtomeinmanyways.ServingasaNHPAofficer
wouldgivemetheopportunitytogivebacktooursport.Therearemanychallenges
aheadtoassurethatoursportmovesforward.
IfeelIamqualifiedforthispositionformanyreasons:
• IhaveservedasPresidentoftheOhioHorseshoePitchingAssociationforthe
pasteightyears.DuringthattimeIhaveassembledagreatgroupofofficersthat
workhardtopromoteoursport.
• IhavebeenheavilyinvolvedinpromotinghorseshoepitchinginSouthAfricaand
Namibia.
• Ihavepromotedhorseshoepitchingwithmanyyearsofexhibitionpitching.Our
familyhaspitchedattheBobEvansFarmFestivalfor44consecutiveyears.

allofthegoodstuffinbetween.Let’sstartwithasmallfowlupthatImadeina“Top
Ten”calculationandtheevolutionthattookplacetofixtheproblemandtheseriesof
actionsthatleadtothatsolution.Let’sstartatthebeginning.
AveryniceyoungladynamedDeniseDalyfromthegreatstateofIllinoishashada
terrificyearofhorseshoepitchingwinningtheJuniorGirl’sWorldChampionshipin
Topekafollowedbybeingonthewinningteaminthe2015SanctionedLeagueTeam
TournamentinWentzville.Shealsopitchedverywellintwosanctionedleaguesin
Springfield,Illinois.LeeWatkins,theleaguedirectorofsaidleagues,submittedtheFinal
Statsfortheleaguesusingstandard“FinalStats”forms.Leedidnotuseour(NHPA)
wonderfulsoftware,HSMaster(createdbyKurtWhaley),tosubmitthedata.Theform

Why,youask?Whenleaguedirectorssubmit(viaemail)the“FinalStats”usingthe
“ASCIIExportFinalStats”filecreatedbyHSMaster,Icandropthedataintomy
SanctionedLeaguesoftwarewithaminimumofmanualinput.Whichleadsmebackto
Deniseandtothehappyending,butIdigress.WhenIenteredDenise’sstatsfromthe
summerleague,Iinadvertentlyenteredherhighgameas72.5%.Iusedthefigurefrom
theadjacentcolumn,whichwasherprevioushighgamefromthespringleague.This
finegamewhichwasactuallyan80%game,turnedouttobethe“highgameofthe
year”forJuniorGirls.
Iorderedthe“TopTen”plaquesandshippedouttheover160awardpackagesforthe
300recipients,whichbringsusbacktoLeeWatkins.Leecallsandinformsmeofmy
erroronDenise’splaque.IthoughtaboutitandtoldLeethatIwouldfixthe“TopTen”
postingonthewebpageandthatherplaque,whichhadherlistedasnumberoneinthe
categorybuthadthewrongpercentlisted,wouldnotbefixed.Ireasonedthatitwasa
hassletofixandthatshewastheonlyonethatwouldknowthemistake.
Nowthestorybegins.Igotoffofthephoneandmywonderfulwife(Diane)ofalmost
50years(September3rd)whohadheardmostoftheconversationwithLee,mumbled
somethingaboutmebeinga“cheapsucker”.DianehadkeptscoreforDenisein
WentzvilleandifyouknowDianeatall,youwouldknowthataftermeetingherfora
fewminutes,you’llbefriendsandtalkingupastorm.RegardlessofwhetherDenise
remembersDianeornot,overthenexttwodays,Diane,beingsubtle(not),reminded
methatthisniceyoungladywouldhavethisplaquehanginginaprominentplacewitha
pieceofducttapeoverthe72.5%inkedoverwiththecorrect80%writteninfeltpen.
IfinallycametomysensesandcalledLeebacktomakearrangementstocorrectthe
plaque,whichshouldbecompletedbeforeDeniseevenknowswhathappened.What
thenisthehappyendingyouask?Wellletmetellyou,it’shappyonatleasttwolevels:
First,IgotawonderfulchancetopromotetheuseofHSMasterinleagueplayandhope
thatleaguedirectorswilllookintousingitiftheyarenotatthistime.Secondly,and
moreimportantly,IgotanotherdoseofrealityastowhyIhavebeenfortunatetobe

MixedClasses–AdvantagesandDisadvantages

ThemixingofClassesinTournamentPlayhasbecomeverycontroversial.Somepitchers
areverymuchinfavorofit,andothersareverymuchagainstit.Butbeforewegetinto
theprosandconsofmixing,it'simportantthatwedefinewhat'mixing'isbecauseitcan
meanseveraldifferentthings.Itcanrefertothemixingofgenders…maleandfemale.It
canrefertothemixingofthemanydifferentDivisionsthathavebeencreated;i.e.Men,
Women,Seniors,Elders,andJuniors.And,ofcourse,itcanrefertothemixingof
pitchingdistanceswithinaClass,primarily40-footerswith30-footers.Anditisthis
'mixed-distance'mixingthathasbecomethemostcontroversial.

Let'sfirstconsidersomeofthepossibleadvantagesofmixingClasses.Inmanyofour
morelocaltournaments,wherethetotalnumberofentriesislower,themixingof
Divisionsmakesitpossibletokeeptheringerpercentage'spread'closertogether,from
thetoptothebottomoftheClass,givingeveryoneinthatClassabetterchanceof
winningsomegames.InaClassof8,wheretheremightbe4full-distanceand4shortdistancepitchers,thepercentagespreadmightbe10%orless.InaClassof8fulldistanceor8short-distancepitchers,the%agespreadwouldmostlikelybemuch
greaterthatthis,especiallyforthehighestorlowestpercentagepitchers/Classesinthat
tournament.Andsofor8-pitcherClasses,itismucheasiertocreateClasseswitha
'tighter'ringerpercentageby'mixing'pitchingdistances,makingitamorecompetitive
group.InCharterswheremixingwithinClassesisgenerallyacceptable,thisisthebest
andeasiestwaytocreatecompetitiveClasses.Mixing,however,isnotacceptablein
someCharters,andsowhatotheroptionsarethere?
HowcanTD'screatemorecompetitiveClasseswithoutmixing?Well,herearesome
optionstoconsider:
1)ReducethesizeoftheClass;sayfromeighttosixpitchers.
Advantages-Thiswillmostalwaysreducethepercentage'spread'.
Disadvantages-Somepitchersmaynotbehappyaboutpitchingonlyfivegames,
especiallyifthey'vedrivenagreatdistance.
2)Ifthepercentagespreadisstilltoohigh,reducethesizeoftheClasstofourpitchers
andplayadoubleroundrobin.
Advantages-ThismaybeanevenmorecompetitiveClass,givingallofthepitchersa
betterchangetowingames.Theywillalsobepitching6gamesinsteadof5,asabove.
Disadvantages-Somemaynotliketopitchagainstthesamepitchertwiceinthesame
tournament.WithfewerintheClass,theamountofanyprizemoneyofferedwillbeless
thanifmorepitcherswere'payinginto'thatClass.Andiftrophiesorplaquesare
awarded,moreofthemwillberequiredfortheseadditional,smallerClasses.
3)UseofhandicappingforClasseswheretheringerpercentagespreadismorethan8or
10percent.
Advantages-a)Theloweraveragepitcherswillhaveabetterchanceofwinningover
higheraveragepitcherssincepointswillbeaddedtotheir'scratch'scores.b)All,or

WeekendatJerry’s

PitcherswhoattendtheWorldTournamentnoticedachangeinpitchingconditions
beginningin2008.InYork,Pennsylvania,webeganusingboxesbuiltbyJerryLaBrosse
andothermembersoftheNHPA.Sincethattime,thesecourtshavebeentransported
fromsitetositeandusedateachsubsequentlocation.Asexpected,overtimesomeof
themhavebeendamagedinonewayoranotherandhaveneededtobereplaced.With
thisinmind,JerryandIdecidedtotakeonthisproject.SooneweekendinMarch,I
drovetohisplaceinMinnesota.ThusbeganmyweekendatJerry’s.
WhenIarrivedFridayevening,thecomponentswerealreadyinplace,havingbeencut,
fabricatedandreadyforassembly.Eachboxrequiressix2X4s,apieceof¼inch
plywood,twoangleirons,apieceofsteelstock,eightcarriagebolts,apieceof3/8inch
belting,one1-inchmetalstake15incheslong,variousscrews,boltsandasplashof
blackpaint.Jerryhadallthetoolsneeded(saws,drillpress,router,etc.)tomakeitall
possible,andaspaciousbarnthatalsohas3courtsthatareusedtwiceaweekfor
leagueplay,atruemulti-purposefacility.
Theprocessistimeconsumingandthestepsmustbefollowedinastrictorder.WhileI
cannotputatimerequiredforassemblyperbox,ittookJerryandIfromFridayevening
toSundayafternoontoassemble20boxes.Theentireprocess,however,takesmuch
longer.Cuttingthewood,fabricatingtheangleironsandmetalbarthatholdsthestake,
buildingthestakes,andotherprocessesweredoneaheadoftime.Somecomponents
mustbeinterchangeable(stakes,backboards,frontbumpers)notonlywiththecourts
wemade,butwiththeoriginals.TheNHPAhasover120boxesthatcanbeassembled,
anditwouldbeimpossibletotrytomatchupthesamestakeorbackboardeachyear,
thustheneedforthemtobethesame.
OnecomponentthatcannotbemeasuredinmonetarytermsistheTLCthatwentinto
eachandeveryone.AsIwasputtingthemtogether,Irecalledallthememoriesfrom
the24WorldTournamentsthatIhavebeenfortunateenoughtoattend.Whenourkids
weregrowingup,wewereabletomaketheTournamentpartofourvacationeachyear.
Mywife,kidsandgrandkidshaveallpitchedintheWorld,pluswehaveseenalotofthis
greatcountry,makinglifelongfriendsalongtheway.
Theyaremorethanjusthorseshoeboxes…muchmore.

PACIFICNORTHWESTCHAMPIONSHIPS(YAKIMA,WA)
Oneofthelargestlong-runningtournamentsinoursportisthePacificNorthwest
Championships,playedinYakima,Washington.Notonlyisthetournamentlong
running,asitbeganin1946andisstillanactiveannualevent,itisprobablythelargest
eventheldalongtheWestCoast.
Considerablehistoryisknownaboutthiseventbecauseithashadunbelievablerecord
keepingandretention,andforthisresearchproject,BarryChapelleprovidedanoriginal
copyofaten-pagereportcommemoratingthefifty-yearanniversaryin1995ofthe
PacificNorthwestHorseshoePitcher’sAssociation.Hehadacopybecausein1995he
hadbeenPresidentoftheassociationforthepast20years.TheChapellefamilyhas
providedservicetothesportofhorseshoeformanydecades.BarryisaNationalHallof
Famemember(1993)andhissisterVicki(Chapelle)Winstonisamemberofthe
NationalHallofFame(1970),aswellasherlatehusbandEarlWinston(1988),both
devotedmembersoftheNHPA,givendecadesofservicetotheMissouriCharterand
theNationalAssociation.ItshouldbeofnosurprisetofindthatCletusChapelle,father
andaNationalHallofFamemember(1981),waybackin1946,wasSecretary/Treasurer
ofthePacificNorthwestHPAandafoundingofficerofthistournament.
Followingareafewnotesextractedfromoriginalrecordsthathadbeenreprintedin
that50-yearanniversaryreport.Thereisanincredibleamountoftournamenthistoryin
thefollowingphrases,bothinwhatissaidandwhatwasn’tsaid:

ThisAssociationhelditsfirstmeetingonSeptember29,1946.Therewere35original

courtsattheElksParkwerebuiltandwereallpaidbydonatedmoney,hardworkby
someofthemembersandtheParkBoard.Therealwayshasbeendifficultygettingmen
tokeepscore,sotheyhadtoimposeonthewivesandanyoneelsetheycouldfindto
keepscore.GenePatricksuggestedthattheyhirescorekeepers;heevenofferedto
donate$10.00outofhisownpocket.Cletusfeltthatthiswasimproperandmadethe

ThePacificNorthwestOpenheldannuallyatYakima,Washington,thesecondweekend
afterLaborDayinSeptemberhasbeenheldeveryyearfor32years.Itwasformerly
calledthe“NorthwestOpen”butbecausemanyplacethroughoutthecentralstate
begantousethename“Northwest”itwaschangedto“PacificNorthwestOpen.”Itwas
heldatthefairgroundsinYakimathefirstyearsandthenmovedtoElksMemorialPark
inthelatteryears,butalwaysinYakima.
Thefirsttournamentwasheldin1946.LewisGetchellofTacomawonthetitlethefirst3
years.Hereceivedcashforthe1946and1947victories.In1948hereceivedanice
trophyashewonthechampionshipafteraclosegamewithJohnMonasmith.Cletus
ChapelleofPortland,Oregonhasestablishedatremendousrecord,havingcompetedin
thetopclasseveryoneofthe32yearsthetournamenthasbeenheld.Heneverwona
championship,buthascomeveryclose.HewasinaplayoffwithHenryKnauftforthe
titlein1969butlost.
ThefirstPacificNorthwestLadiestournamentwasheldin1967withsixwomen
competing.AliceRehardofSpokanewonthefirstchampionship.MildredKuhneof
Tacomaistheonlyladytowinmorethanonechampionship.Shewonthetitlefour
consecutiveyears(1968-1971).
ThefirstPacificNorthwestJuniorBoyschampionshipwasheldin1967withJimD.
MalvernofSeattlewinningthefirsttitle.MikeWeber,Hoquiam,competedin1969and
woundupwith82.40%butitwasunofficial,ashedidnotplayenoughgames.Hadhe
pitchedtherequirednumberofgames,hemighthaveestablishedsomelastingPacific
NorthwestrecordsashedidinhisWashingtonStateTournaments.SamWoodmanand
RayDurfeehad2consecutivechampionshipsformostjuniortitles.
Thistournamenthasgonethegameteasfarastournamentformat.Itstartedinthe
1940swithjustone(Men’s)class,whichinvolvedqualifyingand50pointsgames;then
after19yearsmovedintoexpendednumberofclasses(1965),andthen3yearslater
establishedawomen’sdivisionandjuniorclasses,butstillinthe50pointgameera.The
tournamentevolvedintonoqualifying,largetournaments,becomingNHPAsanctioned,
40-pointgames,EldersDivisionandeventuallymixedclasses.Fewtournamentsinour
historyhavesurvivedfor70yearbeingaprestigiouseventorhavehadthreename
changesforthatmatter.Andweknowthisonlybecausetherehavebeenextremely
dedicatedmemberswhohavemaintainedandprotectedtheevent’shistorytoshare
thatwithustoday.

Fame,locatedinthecenterofthecountry.Wehaveattemptedinthepastfewyearsto
disseminateinformationaboutthisbeautifulfacilityinWentzville,Missouri.Didyou
knowthattherearekeymembersinyourcharterthathaveaninformationalbrochure
abouttheHallofFameandtheorganizationthatwasestablishedtoensureitssurvival?
Oryoucanrequestonefromus.ThatorganizationistheNHPFtheNationalHorseshoe
PitchersFoundation.HaveyouspokentoyourfellowpitchersabouttheHallofFame?
HaveyoustoppedbyonyourwaytoanyoftheWorldTournamentsinthelastfew
years?
Duringourannualmeetingthisyear,wehopetodrawupsomelongtermplansthings
likea5,10andperhapsa20-yearplan.Someofthoseplanshavetodowithafacility
aspectofkeepingthebuildinglookinggreat.Itisincumbentonustoensurethatthis
facilityremainsingreatshapeasithasforthepast10years.Yesfolks,it’sbeen10years
sincethededicationandgrandopeningoftheNHPAHallofFame.InOctoberisthe
actualanniversaryofthatdate.Duringthismeetingwewillalsodiscusshowwewillbe
abletoassistwithapossiblesetofeducationalcriteriatoassistclubsandchartersin
theirquestfornewmembers.
IfyouhavenotvisitedtheHallofFameinafewyearsthenyouaremissingoutonsome
wonderfuldisplays.YoureadinthelastissueofNewslineabouthowBobRogerskeeps
thedisplayscurrentandfresh.Bobiscertainlyakeyfigureinkeepingthisfacility
