AMI - Automated Metering
Infrastructure encompasses ALL of the
below. Developed to “enable” enhanced
resource optimization and is the backbone
of a smart grid (two-way meters).
AMM - Automated Meter Management
(Data management and billing). Utilized to
“enrich” information quality.
AMR - Automated Meter Reading
(connects smart meters.) Implemented to
“enhance” a critical process. Can be an
internal or external module through which
utility company communicates with meter
remotely and take meter readings. Some
meters are retrofitted with AMR modules
(one-way meters).
Utility Meter – Gas, electricity, water
Standalone Meter – May be mechanical or electronic
Smart Meter – Networked meter (RF, power line, wired)

What Does Smart Grid Mean?
►Smart
Grid* – “A smart grid enables two-way communication and
digital control throughout the electricity delivery infrastructure.”
►According
to the United States Department of Energy's Modern Grid
Initiative report, a modern smart grid must:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Be able to heal itself
Motivate consumers to actively participate in operations of the grid
Resist attack
Provide higher-quality power that will save money wasted from outages
Accommodate all generation and storage options
Enable electricity markets to flourish
Run more efficiently

<$10 Single-Phase Electricity Meter Reference Design
Using 9RS08KA8 with RS 485 Communication
Rated Voltage: 220V; Maximum Operating Voltage Range: 80% ~ 120%;
Current Range I: 5(30)A; Frequency Range: 50Hz±5%; Accuracy Level: 1.0
Rated Temperature: 23 deg C; Maximum Operating Temperature Range: 25 ~ +55 deg C ; Power Consumption: ≤ 1VA
Basic Function - Measurement Function - Active Power Accumulating
Function
Output - Main control board outputs pulses for active power measurement.
Output power pulses could be used for calibration. Power pulses are square
waves with 80ms period and ±20% tolerance, and voltage drop of pulses’
amplitude is < 10% of rated value (High Level > 0.9VD) , low level of output
pulses is <0.9V. Even under maximum rated load, corresponding pulse
numbers should be output instantaneously.
Communication - Infrared communication port with 1200 bps baud rate;
RS485 communication with 1200 bps baud rate; Communication protocol
complies with DL/T645.
Display - Keeps displaying when power off
Electromagnetic Compatibility - ESD (Electronic Static Discharge): 8kV;
High Frequency Electromagnetic Field: 10V/m; EFT (Electrical Fast
Transient): Operating state 2kV, Not-operating state 4kV; Voltage Surge:
4kV

Power Line Modem Reference Design based on 56F8025
Results:
Load & noise: roughly 380m of cable, TV, fans, heaters, lamps, bulbs
Receiver gain: 47
BER: 100%, PER: 100%
FEC: there were almost zero errors on the line.
Performed extensive tests on five sockets with different levels of
attenuation and different kinds of noise on 38.4 kHz & 57.6 kHz at a baud
rate of 2400bps, Manchester encoded S-FSK (which can also be
detected as two independent ASK streams/channels).
Transmitting: injected signal which was right at the top of CENELEC
limits (38.4 kHz – 123dBμV, 57.6 – 122dBμV).
Receiving: evaluated attenuation & disturbances for the received signal.
This PLM modem uses the frequency band 'A' of the CENELEC directive
(frequency band 3-95kHz) reserved for energy providers (not consumer
home networks). The PLM application is based on the Freescale
DSP56F8025/23 family.
S-FSK (Spread FSK) modulation is used for communication, and both SFSK modulation/demodulation routines are fully handled by DSC software.
Power line modem baud rate is 2400bps and data consistency is secured
with FEC (Forward Error Correction Reed-Solomon codes with erasure)
methods. Modems use the 'repeating' technique to reach larger distances in
harsh environment (targeting typically 500-1000m from the central node).

National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) will receive $10M to
help implement a smart-grid interoperability framework “that includes
protocols and model standards for information management to achieve
interoperability of smart-grid devices and systems,” according to the
legislation.
The bill directs NIST to solicit input on building the framework from public
and private groups, such as the Grid-Wise Architecture Council and the
IEEE. NIST must start the effort within 60 days and publish a progress report
on its work within a year.
