NEW EN 280:2013 SAFETY STANDARD
EFFECTIVE SINCE JANUARY 2015
The EN 280:2013 safety standard, effective since the end of January 2015, applies to all Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs). At Terex
AWP, safety is a focus, so all of our Genie® products that are subject to the standard are already in compliance with its requirements. You
may notice some changes in our new machines shipped since the introduction of the new standard - these changes are described below.
The standard only applies to newly built machines, so there is no need for you to make any changes to your existing fleet.
CHANGES TO MACHINES UNDER THE NEW EN 280 SAFETY STANDARD
Chassis Tilt
• Off level and stowed (platform down) - Drive enabled in both directions for all booms.
• Off level and out of stowed (platform raised) - Drive disabled in both directions for the Z™-30-20,
Z-34/22, and Z-45/25 DC/BE. For all other booms, drive will be disabled only in the direction the
operator is driving. Switching off the engine will disable drive in both directions.
• Off level and moving from stowed to out-of-stowed - Drive disabled in both directions for all booms.
Overriding of overload
This new feature applies only when the emergency lowering system (AUX) is
operated and the machine is overloaded.
• For the Z-33/18, Z-40/23, Z-80/60, ZX™-135/70, S-100, S-105, S-120,
S-125, SX-180 and all vertical lifts with load sensing systems - when operating
the emergency lowering system with the platform overloaded, the message

RECOVERY
message will
appear here
“OVERLOAD RECOVERY” will appear on the control station display.
• Models with load sense and no control station displays including the
Z™-30/20, Z-34/22, Z-45/25, Z-51/30, Z-62/40, S™-40, S-60, S-80,
TZ™-34/20 and TZ-50, activating either the AUX toggle switch or the TZ hand
pump will require the operator to break a security tie.
Load sense
• Load sense recovery allows limited function under power of the AUX pump from either the
platform or ground control station when overloaded. Drive and steer functions are not allowed
during recovery. This applies to all booms.
Platform level
• Manual platform levelling does not operate simultaneously with other boom or platform
movements. If another function is operated, manual platform level will stop. This applies to the

• For all other booms, multiple functions will be operable because the control system does not
allow the platform to exceed 5 degrees during manual adjustment.

• I’ve heard about a “new” EN 280, what does it mean?
EN 280 is the standard that MEWPs must comply with in order
to be sold in EU and other countries that require compliance to
EN 280.
• Which products does EN 280 apply to? Are GTHs
affected?
EN 280 applies only to platforms (MEWPs).
BEFORE
It does not apply to material lifts or GTHs (telehandlers) unless they
have a man-platform fitted as an attachment.
• What is the impact of EN 280 on machines already on
the market?
Nothing, machines already in use and machines
manufactured before the 31st of January 2015 are not
affected.
No retrofits, modifications, changes or updates in the official
documentation are required.
AFTER
All our platforms are compliant to the EN 280 safety standard at the date of manufacture.
• Are the machines built/sold before the 31st of January 2015 compliant to EN 280?
Absolutely.
Replaced the Flashing Beacon Option
with standard LED “lowering” beacons
on Slab Scissors.
All our products are compliant to the EN 280 version in force at their date of manufacture and can be
used as usual. There is no difference in terms of safety between two machines built according the old
and new EN 280. There is no reason to wait for a new EN 280 compliant machine if an old EN 280
compliant machine is available.
• How can I recognize a machine compliant
to the new EN 280 against one compliant to
the old EN 280?
BEFORE
By referring to either of the following:
- On the machine serial label: date
- On the declaration of conformity: issue date
- On the Operator Manual: effective date
All machines with a manufacturing date after
January 2015 will be compliant to the new
EN 280:2013.
AFTER
• Will there be other changes to EN 280 in
the near future?
Yes, there is an amendment to the standard coming
this year which will impact machines manufactured
in 2017 (estimated date).
