Other benefits:
• Long-term energy savings
• Improved operations, maintenance and management practices
• Reduced environmental impact
Jamie Galileo, vice president of facilities for Larry H. Miller Group of Companies,
can quickly name two reasons why continually improving energy efficiency is a
winning proposition at EnergySolutions Arena – home of the Utah Jazz – and
other Larry H. Miller Group of Companies venues.
“First, it’s the right thing to do,” said
Galileo. “Whatever power we’re not
using can be used by somebody else,
which means another power plant
may not need to be built. That’s good
for the environment.”
The other reason? “Lower electrical
consumption equals smaller bills.”
Let’s turn the
answers on.
‘We have a partner’
“Whatever power we’re

plant may not need to

Since 2003, the Larry H. Miller Group
of Companies has received nearly $298,000 in incentives from Rocky Mountain
Power’s wattsmart® Business program for energy-efficient lighting and HVAC
upgrades at EnergySolutions Arena and other facilities.
These improvements save the organization approximately 3.8 million kilowatthours of electricity, 800 kilowatts of demand and nearly $312,000 in energy
costs every year.

“With Rocky Mountain Power, we have a partner in energy conservation,”
said Galileo.
In fact, one of the Larry H. Miller Group’s recent projects served as one of
the pilots for the utility’s wattsmart Business energy management offerings.
Energy management is a system of practices that creates reliable and persistent
electric energy savings through improved operations, maintenance and
management practices in facilities.
Jamie Galileo checks a variable frequency drive,
installed to help the arena’s HVAC system run
more efficiently.
As part of an energy management project for Megaplex Theatres at Jordan
Commons, Rocky Mountain Power funded a study to identify opportunities to
tune up and repair the HVAC system and controls. Larry H. Miller Group then
invested time and budget to making the improvements at the theater.
The teamwork on the project has resulted in annual energy savings of nearly
234,000 kwh. The project payback was less than a year.

Flexibility and long-term savings
Rocky Mountain Power’s energy management options are tailored to business
customers’ operations and staff resources. The utility covers the energy
engineering costs and customers receive $0.02 per kwh verified savings to
offset some or all of the costs of implemented strategies.
Other Larry H. Miller Group projects, such as lighting upgrades at its
15,411-seat, minor league baseball stadium, and HVAC changes at the Utah
Jazz practice center, have benefited from Rocky Mountain Power technical
expertise and incentives.
Galileo said he likes the flexibility wattsmart Business offers. “We take a look
at factors like return on investment and timetable for a project to see what’s
best for us.” He also noted that even after the capital investment of a project
is recouped, “The energy savings never stop.”
