Japanese Translation and Localization of HP Products

One-stop support, from high-volume translation to video production

"Beyond just translation quality, Human Science's ability to conscientiously follow the direction of the local managers at our Japanese office has been extremely helpful. We hope that Human Science will become more deeply involved in our translation activities."

Hewlett-Packard Company's (HP) Concerns

Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) is a global company with over 320,000 employees around the world.

It ships printers and PCs as well as servers and related services worldwide.

Being able to quickly and effectively translate and localize is one of the keys to their business success.

Thus, they wanted to reduce their number of partner vendors to effectively consolidate know-how and reduce management costs.

However, the goal for the Japanese market was not only to consolidate the massive localization business but to also achieve a wide variety of detailed localization work that would satisfy Japanese users.

In their search for a company that could satisfy their need for both capacity and flexibility, they contacted Human Science.

Human Science's Solutions

We assembled a full-time team consisting of four project managers. By executing the work while sharing information within the team, they were able to continuously accumulate know-how, stabilize quality, and plan for improvements.

・ Large-volume translation

Although one project might consist of tens of thousands of words, it is not uncommon for multiple projects to be active at the same time. It is when multiple projects are running in parallel with high volume that the true quality control of a translation company is tested. Human Science has invested a lot of effort in the development and management of translators and reviewers to achieve reliable quality control that does not rely on individual translators.

・ Small-volume translation with short deadlines

To date, our smallest translation job was just "one word." However, you have to stay sharp even on the smallest job and to translate while checking the context before and after the source. The system was created to be flexible and based on the need to request same-day, rush projects.

・ Writing of manuals

We created magazine-style guides that target consumers and that are unique to Japan, and also added original, post-translation writing as well. Human Science provides a service that utilizes

Japanese writing skills developed since the company's founding in 1985.

・ Multimedia localization

In a movie subtitle translation and editing project, the translation must be rewritten in a concise, easy-to-understand manner that takes into consideration the number of characters that can be displayed on-screen. We also propose multiple narrators to provide a difference in tone and reading style when substituting the audio with a Japanese narration.

・ Interpretation

Human Science also provides interpretation for HP when they are discussing or meeting with end clients. We choose an optimal person from a pool of trustworthy interpreters. Interpreting is not just translation-it is an extremely meaningful way to assist on the front lines in a way that expands HP's business.

Feedback from Hewlett-Packard Company (HP)

Beyond just translation quality, Human Science's ability to conscientiously follow the direction of the local managers at our Japanese office has been extremely helpful. We hope that Human Science will become more deeply involved in our translation activities. It would be helpful to have them meet managers from our various departments to thoroughly introduce their services.

From the Human Science Managers

When localizing a product targeting consumers, it's important to be careful about the choice of words even more so than for a product aimed at business users. While it can be challenging, being involved in the creation of a document that many people will read is really rewarding. There is a feeling of satisfaction from 'making something' rather than just doing straight translation.

We also periodically participate in the customer's events to see with our own eyes how the customer positions the products and how the users react.

I think that not getting stuck on a word-by-word translation and being able to see the whole picture for a project or the customer's business increases your motivation and improves final quality. In the future, I hope to work closely with our internal production team to produce work that is easy for Japanese users to understand.
