Daytime Book Discussion

The Wright Brothers by David McCullough

Thursday, July 21 at 3:15 pm

On a winter day in 1903 on the

Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Ohio changed history. It would take the world some time to believe what had happened: the age of flight had begun, with the first heavierthan-air, powered machine carrying a pilot. Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did? David McCullough, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, tells the surprising, profoundly American story of Wilbur and Orville Wright. McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers’ story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Thursday, August 18 at 3:15 pm

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs. A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-yearold Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s

Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason.

And somehow – impossible though it seems – they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s

Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Nighttime Book Discussion

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Tuesday, August 2 at 7:00 pm

“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins the story of this debut novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town

Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James

Lee, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue – Marilyn wants her daughter to become a doctor rather than a homemaker, James wants Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party. When

Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos, forcing them to confront the long-kept secrets that have been slowly pulling them apart. (LWB002)

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson

Tuesday, September 6 at 7:00 pm

On May 1, 1915, a luxury ocean liner sailed out of New York bound for Liverpool and carrying a record number of children and infants.

The passengers were surprisingly at ease even though Germany had declared the seas around

Britain to be a war zone. But the Lusitania was the fastest liner in service and her captain,

William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that had kept civilian ships safe from attack for a century. Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game. As a German

U-boat and the Lusitania made their way toward

Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and small converged to produce one of the great disasters of history. (LWB002)

A Film Screening

Tuesday, August 23 at 7:00 pm

Registration begins July 26

The expression “sent up the river” was coined by convicts who were sent up the Hudson River to do time at the infamous Sing Sing

Prison in Ossining, NY. First

Degree finds hope in this seemingly hopeless place by investigating an unusual college behind bars that is successfully preventing

Sing Sing inmates from being sent back up the river after their release. First Degree takes viewers inside this maximum security prison and introduces them to some unforgettable inmates. One inmate, Jermaine Archer, is a former drug dealer who was sentenced to 22 years to life for murder. Jermaine talks about how his prison reputation changed from being a feared gang leader from the streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn to being a role model for students attending college at Sing Sing. We attend Jermaine’s college graduation ceremony and watch as he, for the first time in his life, brings tears of joy to his mother’s eyes. The film’s director will be available for a question-and-answer period after the showing.
