This also happens to be my kids’ favourite time of year because they love the Way Out West Festival for Children. Last year, the WOW Festival attracted more than 10,000 people, and this year it’s set to be even bigger with 26 programs over four days. The Refugees Exhibition is also a standout in this program, so I encourage everyone to come along and take a look. Drawing on the past 120 years of artistic practice, the exhibition shows the huge contribution migrants have made to our culture and provides a rare opportunity for the people of Liverpool to access these important works that have never before been seen in Western Sydney. So as you can see, there are plenty of great things happening at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre! Ned Mannoun Mayor, Liverpool City Council From the Director Welcome all, to yet another six months of creative programming at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. As this is my first message as Acting Director, I wanted to take the opportunity reflect on my time here at Casula Powerhouse and how much the Centre has grown and evolved since I first started. From the vibrant cultural festivals, showcasing of local, national and international artists, the thousands of children now visiting us each year, delicious foods and of course our diverse program, delivered by the Centre’s dedicated staff – the list is endless! I have enjoyed every moment of seeing the Centre become one of the most prominent and important cultural venues in South West Sydney. The next six months will be a showcase of the amazing things we are currently planning. Come along, experience and enjoy! We look forward to seeing you soon. Khaled Sabsabi has been making outstanding contributions to the development of Australian contemporary art since the late 1980s. His artistic practice has moved between a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary flow, which includes community engagement, music, video, film, theatre, sound, media, installation and curating. He is a local artist, living and working in the South-West Sydney suburb of Bonnyrigg, and already has one major work in the Liverpool City Council Collection, Ali or Eli (2005), which was recently exhibited at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre in our celebratory birthday exhibition 21 (October 17 - November 29 2015). Sabsabi was awarded the prestigious Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship in 2010, the 60th annual Blake Prize in 2011 and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Ian Potter Scholarship in 2014. He has participated and presented in over 54 solo and group exhibitions across the world. Sabsabi is a versatile artist who creates socially engaged artworks which interrogate issues of identity and consider the migrant and human experience more broadly. In 2014 he presented two artworks, Tourist (2007) and Solde (2007), in the exhibition Subject to Ruin at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. The artwork Solde was commissioned to be adapted to the themes of the exhibition. Of the original eight yellow bicycles from Solde, two were crushed and smashed down in a compactor, forming the new artwork Sale (2014). The significance of Sabsabi participating in Subject to Ruin was for the artist to re-visit his earlier artworks to express the complexities and hardships enforced on communities in reaction to terrorism and cultural profiling. Solde/Sale symbolically references facets of guerrilla warfare, politics, revolution, resistance and conflict, with the act of crushing the two bicycles for the exhibition symbolic of the damaging nature of conflict and warfare. At the conclusion of Subject to Ruin, Solde and Tourist were offered to Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre as a donation through the Cultural Gifts Program and were officially endorsed in 2015. A number of the bicycles from Solde may be spotted on display in surprising areas of the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. GENERATOR / 11 Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre / 10 17 September - 9 October Exhibitions Exhibitions Soft Core 15 October - 4 November Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre / 12 The Soft Core exhibition presents artistic practices that explore the many facets of ‘softness’ - from large-scale inflatables to forms made from soft materials to materials that simply look soft. These artists are making works that demand attention - forms that are not simply bumped into while looking at paintings. In the 20th century, artists began to disassemble the notion of traditional sculpture by adding and subtracting constructions, incorporating found objects and designating everyday items as art. These adaptive and divergent methods of form making continue today in a generation of artists who define sculpture in the negative condition: not bronze, not stone, not the macho force of the blast furnace. The materials in this exhibition encompass air, inflatable nylon, unfired clay and plastics bags – materials that have been co-opted for their versatility and their mutability between function and emotion. Some of the works in this exhibition require activation – such as electricity or inflation to become whole while others inhabit their softness quietly. Soft Core investigates these practices by presenting existing works and newly commissioned works from 13 Australian and International artists who question the fluctuating meaning of what it means to be soft. Check out page 21 for the Casula Powerhouse Good Food Month event Soft Spot on 14 October, an exclusive prelude to Soft Core. Photograph by Ben Williams. Paramor Prize: Art + Innovation 2017 Registrations opening soon | check www.casulapowerhouse.com for updates The Liverpool City Council vision for the future is to be the city of the great South West - a region of opportunity, prosperity and diversity. Innovation is a guiding principle of Liverpool City Council and the Paramor Prize: Art + Innovation provides an opportunity to develop new solutions and creative explorations of the new challenges and opportunities in the rapidly growing South West Sydney region. Paramor Prize: Art + Innovation was launched in 2015 in memory of one of Australia’s most loved and celebrated female modern artists, Wendy Paramor. Her artistic practice was innovative and forward thinking and as local Liverpool resident, Paramor exemplified the artistic creativity of the Liverpool region. Paramor died at the age of 37 in 1975. A large collection of her works were gifted to Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and the Liverpool City Art, Heritage and Local Studies Collection. In 2017, the second Paramor Prize: Art + Innovation will again feature the major acquisitive prize of $20,000 to the best overall artwork; a $5,000 Mayoral Award will be issued to the artwork that best addresses the guiding principles of Liverpool City Council and a $1,000 People’s Choice Award will be issued to the artwork voted most popular.
