System Description
The ACU Controllers are intelligent remote units
featuring state-of-the-art technology for access
control, alarm monitoring and output control. The
ACU2 interfaces with the APOGEE Security
Technology System (ASTS) of host processors. The
ACU2 offers the latest features and flexibility with an
overall design for reliability, durability and ease of
installation and maintenance.
Each ACU2 unit controls up to 8 card readers with or
without keypads and includes 12 supervised alarm
inputs and 12 relay outputs, all user-configurable as
to function and reporting format. Optional on-board
DES encrypted communication may also be included
to comply with high security, protected area
requirements.
The ACU2 Controllers incorporates 2 external device
ports, each capable of controlling 4 card readers,
multi-dropped using an RS-485 interface. Expanded
input and output capabilities can be added. (See the
ACU Remote Modules datasheet for details.)
Local Data Base
The ACU's local data base is downloaded from the
host computer to provide for local access control
processing even when communication to the host is
lost. The local data base includes storage of 10,000

card records (optionally 50,0000 or 128,000) each
stored with PIN, time zone and door authorization
parameters. When a cardholder presents a card to a
reader, the ACU retrieves that card record from its
local data base to determine if that individual is
authorized for entry at that door, on that day and at
that time, and activates the appropriate door strike
relay if access is authorized. When the transaction is
complete the access event is transmitted to the host
computer for storage. If communication has been
lost between the ACU unit and the host, the event is
stored locally until communication is restored, at
which time all stored events will be transmitted to
the host for storage. A minimum of 1,000 event
transactions can be stored in local memory. The
actual number of transactions that may be stored is
dynamically allocated depending on memory size and
number of cardholders.
Alarm Monitoring
All ACU2s provide twelve supervised alarm inputs
plus cabinet tamper detection and power fault
alarms. The ACU2s also contain twelve auxiliary
output relays which can be locally or globally linked to
either single or multiple alarm inputs with conditional
activation. Relay linking and activation parameters,
as well as card reader time commands, are also
downloaded from the host and stored in local
memory, thus allowing local time command
processing to continue if communication to the host
is lost.
Dial-Up Systems
The ACU2 is available with a full dial-up control facility
when connected over normal dial-up telephone lines
to any of the ASTS host processors. The dial up
software is designed to allow the ACU2 to access up
to eight pre-programmed telephone numbers through
Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.
a built-in fax modem to annunciate alarms and upload
transaction history. The built-in modem is powered
from the ACU2 UPS power supply and consequently
can continue communications in the event of a main
power failure.
The ACU2 dial-up communications facility is unique
for several reasons. First, during the initial download
process, the ACU2 operates on line to the ASTS file
server, so that communications with the file server is
established immediately. The CPU takes over control
of the ACU2, responding to all access requests,
alarm and output control functions, until the full
database of the ACU2 has been downloaded. Thus
there is no waiting for information to be downloaded
to the ACU2 following initial installation.
The ACU2 can also be programmed to ensure that
alarm information is dialed into specialized "alarm
only" ports on the file server, so that a
communication path is always available to the file
server to annunciate alarms.
Reader Architecture
The ACU2 offers the flexibility of reader interface
electronics installation in either of two configurations.
The reader electronics can be integrated in the
housing, with a membrane keypad, and installed
directly adjacent to the door. If the read head
required does not allow such a configuration, as is
the case for Proximity Readers or certain types of
Wiegand Readers, or the customer prefers a two
stage reader configuration, an RRE (Remote Reader
Electronics) unit, can be installed above the door and
interfaced to the read head. Both configurations also
offer the choice of controlling the door lock from a
relay at the door or a relay on the ACU Controller.
