Badger Region Volleyball Association Volume 2, Issue 17 April 28, 2016 THE BADGER BEACON G18s championships arrive in Milwaukee It has been 15 years since Milwaukee hosted an indoor national championship for USA Volleyball — the city hosted the Adult Open Championships May 26-June 2 in 2001. But now, that drought is over. Hundreds of girls teams from across the country will invade the Brew City for the Girls 18s Junior National Championships April 29-May 1. Here is a look at the teams from the Badger Region competing in the championships: Open Division * Milwaukee Sting 18 Gold National Division * FDL Fusion 18 Purple * Milwaukee Sting 18 Black * Motion Volleyball 18 BLU USA Division * Mizuno Wisconsin Juniors 18-1 * Wisconsin Premier 18-Teal Patriot Division: * Capital 18 Adidas * FC Elite 18 Navy * Midwest Penguins 18-1 * MKE Skyline 18 National * Racine Juniors 18-1s * Southport G18s * Southwest G18s * West Bend Power 18-Purple * Wisconsin Performance 18UA * Wisconsin Ice 18 National * Wisconsin Volleyball Academy 18-Black * Wisconsin Volleyball Academy 18-Red * Wisconsin Volleyball Academy Trailblazers 18s Fast facts about the 2016 USAV Girls Juniors National Championships Date: Friday, April 29, to Sunday, May 1, 2016 Location: Wisconsin Center, 400 W. We will have a table at the event welcoming everyone to Milwaukee, where we will also be offering up information on our Coaches Coaching Coaches program, the Enthusiastic, Supportive, Positive sportsmanship program and all the upcoming beach events. The Badger Region is also staffing a luggage check on Sunday, May 1, inside the Wisconsin Center. Email membership@badgervolleyball.org Why a USAV Championship in April?: Over the past three to five years, USAV has seen a steady change in the composition of the Girls’ 18-&-Under Divisions at nationals. The change has been causing fluctuating rosters, late drops of teams, Regions unable to fill allocated bids and significant changes to team rosters to ensure that the team can follow through on its commitment to participate in the Championships. The reasons for this are many: * The majority of the 18s division are seniors who have been playing club volleyball for many years. They are no longer interested in giving up a large chunk of their summer before heading off to college. * Athletes who will be playing college volleyball the following fall, have been asked to report to their respective school right after nationals. * Athletes who will not be playing college volleyball need to get a job to earn money for college or take the next step in life. The Southport B16s captured the title in the B15/16s division at the Dale Rohde Memorial Boys Tournament on April 17. USA Volleyball announced in late November that Milwaukee will be the site of the 2016 Junior Beach Tour National Championships July 22-24 at Bradford Beach, 2400 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. In addition, Bradford Beach will be the site of a Central Open June 18. The Junior Beach Tour is a USA Volleyball-sponsored series that weaves its way through 24 states with close to 60 events in all. The tour is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 18. The age divisions are 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under in both the club and open divisions. Athletes have the opportunity to qualify for the open division of the championships by winning a bid at one of the stops on the tour in the open division. The club division does not offer the opportunity to win a bid to the open division. The Junior Beach Tour National Championship will have an open division for those who qualify and a club division for those who do not. To register for the Central Open, go to www.usavolleyball.org, click on “Beach” and then “Junior Beach Tour,” where you can see the schedule and click on the appropriate date/location. Cost to register is $60 for a team before June 8, $70 before June 22 and $90 before June 24. For any questions about the upcoming election/ nominations, contact Jen Armson-Dyer at jarmsondyer@badgervolleyball.org. Hotel information for both events is now available at www.badgervolleyball.org. Over the weekend, the team took fifth place in the annual Lloy Ball Classic in Fort Wayne, Ind., losing only to Iowa Ice (PVL) in the quarterfinals. Throughout the day, the team defeated Lakeshore Surge (PVL) and Gulf Shore Region (PVL) in addition to Luau Chicago, a men’s AA team. The team’s only pool play loss on the day came against a Canadian team. Badger Region will compete in the PVL Championships in Orlando, Fla., from May 28 to May 31. To donate to the PVL team, contact Brian Sharkey at brian@ badgervolleyball.org. We want to help place our experienced coaches in a position to share their knowledge, see new coaches in action, and guide coaches toward proven methods. The region has five FREE mentor-training clinics to give away. At each two-hour clinic, all club coaches participate, while three coaches are trained to be mentors by an Advisor Coach. We have done a good portion of the work for the new mentors. In 2015, I AM Volleyball Club was the first club to take 2016 part as a guinea pig in the 3C program. According to Master Coach BJ LeRoy, who is helping write the manual for the 3C program, “The I AM folks were excellent. They wanted all the tips and critiques they could get and were happy to have us there. We all learned some new things last night.” Mentor information comes from the latest High Performance clinics, and other USA Volleyball Education resources that are hard to attend in person. Please consider claiming a clinic just as the season starts to get underway. Contact BJ LeRoy (4bjleroy@ gmail.com) or the Badger Region Office for more information.
