HUMAN RESOURCES The Human Resources Association of Central Missouri commemorated last year's HR Day with a ribbon cutting and a veterans hiring initiative, among other events. Missouri HR Day Celebrate this year, and recognize our HR organizations and professionals. O n May 2, human resource professionals and businesses across the state will recognize the secondannual Missouri HR Day and celebrate the accomplishments of those involved in the human resources profession. The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) is the world’s fifth largest affiliate of the national professional association. The Missouri State Increasing awareness and understanding of the vital role of HR professionals was the motivation behind HR Day. Council of SHRM, the creator of HR Day, is honored to serve more than 5,000 HR professionals in the state and wanted to recognize the contributions of Missouri’s human resource professionals. Last year, Governor Jay Nixon signed a proclamation that created Missouri HR Day. The first celebration was May 3, 2013. Although HR has evolved much during the past two centuries, today, businesses expect their HR departments to be experts in strategic planning, HR technology systems, 34 MISSOURI BUSINESS employee relations, employment law, talent management, payroll, compensation, employee benefits, and organizational and workforce development. Additionally, HR departments are expected to understand all aspects of a business and the financial impact HR has on a company’s success. With so much at stake, increasing awareness and understanding of the vital role of HR professionals was the motivation behind Missouri HR Day. For the first celebration last year, the Missouri State Council commissioned art students at Drury University to create logos and other materials to brand the initiative. Volunteer leaders across the state championed the event and planned programming and activities. Across the state, chapter presidents increased awareness in their local communities. A number of groups, businesses, and individuals requested copies of the governor’s HR Day proclamation to post at their work sites. Additionally, many members created workplace recognition programs. The HR staff at the Visiting Nurses Association in Kansas City made T-shirts. Thirty-five HR professionals at the University of Missouri organized an ice cream social for the campus HR staff. The Sedalia chapter challenged employers to “Take HR to Lunch.” The Central Missouri chapter celebrated with a veterans hiring initiative, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and commercials on local radio stations. The Joplin area chapter was recognized by television station KSN 16 and Show Me the Ozarks magazine. In St. Charles, Lewis & Clark Chapter members volunteered at a community college hiring fair that attracted more than 800 individuals. Missouri HR Day provides opportunities to celebrate the HR profession and will foster increased awareness of HR professionals’ contributions to business, industry, government, and our communities.
