Missouri HR Day
Celebrate this year, and recognize our HR organizations and professionals.
O
n May 2, human resource professionals and businesses across the
state will recognize the secondannual Missouri HR Day and celebrate the
accomplishments of those involved in the
human resources profession.
The Society for Human Resources
Management (SHRM) is the world’s fifth
largest affiliate of the national professional association. The Missouri State
Increasing awareness and
understanding of the vital role of HR
professionals was the motivation
behind HR Day.
Council of SHRM, the creator of HR Day,
is honored to serve more than 5,000 HR
professionals in the state and wanted to
recognize the contributions of Missouri’s
human resource professionals.
Last year, Governor Jay Nixon signed a
proclamation that created Missouri HR
Day. The first celebration was May 3, 2013.
Although HR has evolved much during
the past two centuries, today, businesses expect their HR departments to be experts in
strategic planning, HR technology systems,

employee relations, employment law, talent
management, payroll, compensation, employee benefits, and organizational and workforce development. Additionally, HR departments are expected to understand all aspects
of a business and the financial impact HR has
on a company’s success.
With so much at stake, increasing awareness and understanding of the vital role of
HR professionals was the motivation behind Missouri HR Day.
For the first celebration last year, the Missouri State Council commissioned art students at Drury University to create logos
and other materials to brand the initiative.
Volunteer leaders across the state championed the event and planned programming
and activities. Across the state, chapter
presidents increased awareness in their local communities. A number of groups, businesses, and individuals requested copies of
the governor’s HR Day proclamation to post
at their work sites.
Additionally, many members created
workplace recognition programs. The HR
staff at the Visiting Nurses Association
in Kansas City made T-shirts. Thirty-five
HR professionals at the University of Missouri organized an ice cream social for
the campus HR staff. The Sedalia chapter
challenged employers to “Take HR to
Lunch.” The Central Missouri chapter celebrated with a veterans hiring initiative,
a ribbon cutting ceremony, and commercials on local radio stations. The Joplin area
chapter was recognized by television station KSN 16 and Show Me the Ozarks magazine. In St. Charles, Lewis & Clark Chapter
members volunteered at a community college hiring fair that attracted more than 800
individuals.
Missouri HR Day provides opportunities
to celebrate the HR profession and will foster increased awareness of HR professionals’
contributions to business, industry, government, and our communities.
Please join us in recognizing and appreciating all those involved in the HR profession
on May 2, 2014—Missouri HR Day.
