ONLY THE GOOD NEWS, ALL OF THE TIME
New Montmartre daycare is a groundbreaking project
Montmartre’s new school-based
daycare opened its doors this
September, making it a unique initiative
within the Prairie Valley School Division
and one of only a handful of schoolbased daycares in the province.
The $500,000 cost of creating the
25-space licensed daycare centre
within the Montmartre School was
funded by Saskatchewan’s Ministry of
Education, with assistance from the
Prairie Valley School Division.
“The Montmartre Licensed Daycare
Committee is so impressed that we
were able to create a community
initiative like this that will benefit
families, children, the economy and the
school,” said daycare committee
member Renate Selinger. “All of the
groups involved, including the Ministry
of Education, the Prairie Valley School
Division, the Montmartre School and
the Montmartre Licensed Daycare
Committee, worked closely and
cooperatively together to make the
daycare a reality.”
The local committee had been
working feverishly at the start of the
project to raise money to equip and
furnish the daycare. However, funding
for all of the daycare’s appliances,
furnishings and toys has been provided
by the Early Learning and Child Care
(ELCC) branch of the Ministry of
Education.
“It was a huge relief to have all of
our capital costs, including furnishings,
covered,” said daycare committee
member Dale Brenner. “We didn’t have
to worry about fundraising, so we could
put all of our energy into the policies
and processes that the government
requires to establish a top-quality
operation.”
Educational quality toys have been
purchased for the daycare which allow
kids to use their imagination and
creativity with items like blocks,
puppets, sensory tables, soft climbers
and musical instruments.
The new daycare is located on the
north side of the Montmartre school,
where a former classroom and the art
room were transformed into a childfriendly space complete with its own
washroom, kitchen and entrance.
A separate outdoor entrance was
created on the north side of the school,

with an area just outside the door being
fully fenced to create a play zone for
infants and toddlers that is separate
from the Montmartre School
playground.
The daycare has been a busy place,
with 30 full-time, part-time and drop-in/
casual children registered. Rosalind
Schneider is the full-time director, with
one full-time childcare worker and three
casual childcare workers being hired to
assist her.
Operating grant
While parents are charged a fee for
bringing their children to the daycare,
the Ministry of Education’s ELCC is
providing a monthly operating grant
which will help offset the daycare’s
monthly expenses.
“The operating grant has allowed us
to keep our fees affordable, which we
hope will make our daycare accessible
to a greater number of parents,” said
Brenner.
For low-income families, child-care
fees may also be subsidized.
It has taken years of planning,
meetings and negotiations by the
Montmartre Licensed Daycare
Committee to establish a daycare in
Montmartre. Brenner says it was worth
the time and energy, as this project
fulfills a much-needed service and will

benefit the entire community and
surrounding area for years to come.
“I am amazed at what can be
accomplished when a need is realized
in a community,” said Brenner. “The
committee that was formed to establish
the Montmartre Licensed Daycare put
in countless hours of work to see this
daycare become a reality and it is a
privilege to work with such a committed
group.”
Registrations are still being
accepted for children aged six weeks to
12 years old, with drop-in care being
available as scheduling permits.
The daycare hours are 6 a.m. to 6
p.m., based on need.

Centre 48 is starting its eighth fall
session with a brand new partnership.
Renowned Saskatchewan artist
Marilynn Malo will be teaching classes
for Centre 48, sharing her artistic
talents with anyone interested in being
creative.
“You don’t have to be an artist to
take these classes – they’re for anyone
who wants to develop their creative
side and take time for themselves,”
said Malo. “I encourage people to bring
a carload of friends and make it a funfilled learning experience.”
The first class Malo will be offering
through Centre 48 is called, ‘So you
think you’re not creative.’ This class is
designed for both the artistically
inclined and those who just want to
have a weekend of fun.
The class will be held on Saturday,
Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 at
Marilynn Malo’s brand new learning
centre in Wolseley, Sask. It will feature
two full days of art instruction and two
gourmet lunches.
Malo will be teaching a second
class on Nov 21 and 22, which will
feature experimental art, like painting
with wax and creating collages from
old photos and artifacts.
“The time in my life has come when
my goal is to share all I’ve learned over
the years and to inspire others to see
that everyone has a creative side.”
Also new at Centre 48 is
coordinator Pauline Long-Wright. She
has lived in Montmartre for three years
and is excited to become more
involved in the community. LongWright brings many years of
experience in organization
management to the Centre 48 job. The
Centre 48 board wishes to thank
former coordinator Judy Guthrie for her
valuable contribution to the education
centre.
Centre 48 is offering a full slate of
music classes this fall - drum, guitar,
piano and voice lessons start on
Sunday, Oct. 17. All instructors from
last year are returning: Appoline Lucyk,
Cory Christoph, Aaron Cooper and
Jason Spilchen.
Playschool is also being offered this
session, with teacher Krista Brown
welcoming her first students on
Tuesday, Oct. 12.
To register for these Centre 48
classes, call Pauline at 424-2166 or
email centre48@montmartre-sk.com.
Incredible deal offered for All Folk’d Up tickets
While tickets for most concerts run in
the $50 to $100 range, those wanting to
attend Montmartre’s All Folk’d Up
Festival next summer can now get early
bird weekend passes for just $35.
The exceptional price is being
offered until Dec. 31 only, with weekend
passes for adults going up to $45 if
purchased between Jan. 1 and May 15.
After May 15, adult weekend passes
are $55 (ages five and under and 85
and over are free; 6 - 12 year olds pay
$20 for a weekend pass).
“If you get your tickets now, that
translates to just $11.66 for each day of
music, or $1.75 for each of our 20 or so
professional acts,” said festival
committee member Jeannine Bujaczek.
“It’s an unbelievable deal. The low price
is being offered so that everyone can
afford to attend the festival.”

All Folk’d Up organizers say folk
festival tickets will make the perfect
Christmas gift, and they’re encouraging
families to buy their tickets now to save
$20 on each weekend pass.
The first annual All Folk’d Up
Festival held this past July was a great
success, with 17 professional acts
performing and rave reviews being
received from the crowd in attendance.
Organizers are hoping to grow the
festival in 2011, changing the date to
July 8 - 10 in order not to conflict with
Craven’s Big Valley Jamboree on July
14 - 17. Since All Folk’d Up ticket sales
will be capped at 1,000, anyone who
hopes to get the early bird deal is
encouraged to buy their $35 weekend
passes soon. Many acts from 2010
have agreed to come back and new
acts will be added for the 2011 festival.
