WHRL Online Editorial Guidelines

WHRL reserves the right to reject any content for any reason, at our sole discretion.

1. WHRL Online’s Objective

WHRL Online is engaged in the promotion and dissemination of interesting, high-quality content on health and wellness issues that focus on women and their families. WHRL Online is a way to reach the women in Downeast Maine where they are, in a modern format.

2. The BLOG Content Object

The content on WHRL Online should help define what wellness means to women. Every article should have a takeaway that readers can apply to their lives and can enhance their health and wellbeing.

3. Our Audience

WHRL Online’s target audience is women of all ages in coastal Washington County.

4. Topic Approval

If this is your first time writing for WHRL online, you are encouraged to send us your topic idea before writing, to make sure your topic is strong and appropriate for our audience.

5. Linking Policy

Links to outside blogs or websites should be limited to only a couple of links to educational content that helps teach the reader more about the topic at hand. Purely self-promotional links are not acceptable.

6. Photos

Writers are encouraged, but not required, to share a photo that illustrates the message of their post.

Submissions should be of photos to which you own the copyright (i.e., you took the photo), or you have permission from the copyright holder to reprint the photo on WHRL Online. When sending a photo, please include the suggested caption along with the photos credits. It is not okay to save a picture from the Internet for your photo submission.

7. Style and Formatting

We strive for an easy, conversational-style. Use an active voice and be clear and direct. Keep paragraphs short - approximately 70 words. Remove words or descriptions that don’t add value to the content. Web readers scan web pages before they read. If they don’t recognize useful, relevant content, they often move on. Use headings, bulleted lists, and captions to make your copy easy to scan.

8. Article Length

Submissions should generally be between 500 to 1000 words (approximately one to four typed Word pages). Longer articles may be broken into a series.

8. Review Process

By submitting content to WHRL Online, the author accepts and authorizes editing of the material without notice. Further, by submitting an article to WHRL Online it is assumed, unless otherwise stated on the submission, that the submitter is the author and all liability for plagiarism and all other legal issues is assumed by the submitter.

All article submissions are subject to review by the WHRL Online’s editorial committee. Unless an entry requires more than minor edits for spelling and grammar, the copy is not sent back to the author for review prior to publication.

9. Standards for Publication

We do not accept submissions that fall into the following categories:

● Articles that are not your work.

● Articles created as blatant link-bait, with little original insight or practical discussion provided within the post copy.

● Op-ed style posts that discuss why an issue is important without discussing how, specifically, it can be used by the reader.

● Promotional content that is meant to tout the benefits of one specific product/service over others.

● Articles that do not meet the standards above.

10. Author Credit

You may include a short “about the author” paragraph at the end of each blog post. You can include your company name, email, website, and a short bio in the credit paragraph of up to 50 words.

Upon receipt, all submissions become the property of the WHRL and may be printed and reprinted by us at will and without notification or compensation. We do not, however, retain exclusive rights to any article and the author is free to submit and/or sell the article to other outlets at will and without notification to WHRL.
