Online Education Experts
Before being assigned a virtual or blended classroom, all FuelEd instructors
are required to complete 20 hours of online training. Using the same Learning
Management System (LMS) that they will be teaching on, the instructors experience
the same environment their online students face while learning skills necessary to
teach our curricula. This training covers best practices in online instruction, how to
communicate in the virtual environment, as well as skills and tasks associated with
the specific platform and tools they will use.
24-Hour Academic Chat
for Students
Students can get help whenever they
need it with one-click chat access to
a certified teacher, 24-hours a day,
seven days a week (except holidays).
“FuelEd instructors are terrific.
They’re very engaging, and
they set a warm tone that
helps make our students feel
comfortable asking for help.”
Joel Smith, eLearning Facilitator
Spring Branch Independent School District
Houston, TX
In addition, our first-year instructors are assigned a peer coach
who serves as a mentor throughout the school year to ensure a
successful transition to online teaching.
We also require all of our instructors to complete training
units on cyber bullying and mandatory reporting, and attend
a minimum of three structured professional development
meetings each year. In addition, our instructors have 24/7
access to Fuel Education’s extensive catalog of continuing
professional development courses covering topics such
as assessment at a distance, and semester- and year-end
transitions.
To stay up to date on the latest developments in the field, FuelEd
instructors participate in professional learning communities,
and attend content and regional meetings throughout the year.
Individualized Instruction
FuelEd instructors have more time to personalize instruction to
the needs and learning style of each student because, with our
curricula, they don’t need to develop daily lesson plans for each
of their classes. Instructors also have more time to focus on
their students than most brick-and-mortar instructors because
FuelEd teachers don’t have nonteaching responsibilities, such
as cafeteria, playground, or bus duty.
Regardless of the subject matter, our instructors share one
goal: to develop independent learners. During the elementary
grade-levels, students receive more day-to-day guidance. Much
like in a traditional classroom, FuelEd instructors introduce a
concept during a virtual classroom session, and then the student
completes lessons and exercises that reinforce the concept.
As the student moves to middle- and high-school level, the
learning model is flipped. The student first studies the topic by
themselves—working through engaging and highly interactive
curricula—and then applies the knowledge by solving problems
and doing practical work. If they struggle with a specific lesson or
concept, their FuelEd teacher works one-to-one with the student
to help bridge the knowledge gap. Our instructors have found
that allowing students to take ownership of their learning helps
them develop better independent work habits.
Teacher—Student Communications
Communication is key to the success of any online education
program. That’s why FuelEd instructors communicate frequently
with their students via e-mail, in threaded online discussion
boards, during online sessions, and even on the phone. In fact,
many students find that the personal attention they receive
allows them to get to know their FuelEd instructor—and their
instructor to know them—better than some of their teachers
in a brick-and-mortar setting where they were 1 of 25 or more
students in a classroom.
Virtual Classrooms
FuelEd instructors hold live, online sessions at least once a
week. These interactive sessions are used to introduce a new
concept or review challenging or complex concepts or lessons.
This is also a time when students can get real-time answers
to questions and connect with other students in the course.
All sessions are recorded—so if a student misses a session or
wants to review the material, they can watch it anytime and
as often as they choose.
Students also have the option to attend national instructional
sessions in addition to the live, online sessions held by their
own FuelEd instructor. The national sessions can help a
student catch up if they miss their own instructor’s session,
review material they are struggling with, or get a different
teacher’s approach to the topic. The national sessions also
provide an opportunity to connect with other students around
the country taking the same course.
Strong Start Program
As an added support for our instructors, FuelEd launched a
new Strong Start program. Engagement coordinators contact
students within the first ten days of enrolling to ensure they are
logging in. They also work with disengaged students to address
challenges and help get them back on target.
Find out how our teachers can make your online or blended learning program
thrive by personalizing instruction and closing achievement gaps.
