Mechanic/Millwright Apprentice
Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has been selected under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) to be
Canada’s long-term partner for the building of Non-Combat vessels. This multi-billion dollar program will create stable
work over the next decade and beyond, and see the construction of up to 17 ships to start (three Offshore Fisheries
Science Vessels, one Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel, one Polar Icebreaker, two Joint Support Ships, five
Medium Endurance Multi-Tasked Vessels and five Offshore Patrol Vessels).
Seaspan has invested $200 million into modernizing the shipyard facilities and will result in the completion of four new
fabrication buildings, a 300-ton shipbuilding gantry crane and load-out pier by late 2014.

Mechanic/Millwrights install, repair, overhaul and maintain machinery and heavy mechanical equipment, such as conveyor
systems in diverse settings. Mechanics also perform routine maintenance activities, such as cleaning and lubricating
equipment, adjusting valves and seals, and investigating breakdowns.
As a first year Mechanic Apprentice, you will practice and build on your knowledge of basic mechanical systems and
machinery for maintenance and repair while ensuring that you are compliant with the Seaspan’s health, safety, and
environmental standards. Duties will include working on state of the art machinery, drive systems and conducting general
maintenance as required. Support and direction will be provided through supervisors, chargehands, journeypersons, and
mentors. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position which will allow you to
succeed in further schooling and qualify to progress as a second year Mechanic Apprentice once all requirements are
met. Mechanic Apprentices who uphold Seaspan’s Core Values and demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and a willingness

Duties/Accountabilities:


Maintain uptime and reliability of all machine centres including:
 overhead cranes
 robotic profile cutters
 conveyor systems etc.

Education and Experience


Minimum Grade 12 Education
Successfully passed Millwright Foundation Program in B.C.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies







Comprehend and follow written and spoken directions and work in a safe & efficient manner
Good communication skills both written and verbal in the English language
Ability to work in enclosed/confined spaces in awkward positions and at high elevations
Good judgment and reasoning skills
