The Bata44race, let´s celebrate!
Behind the
scenes
The race of this year is not like any of the others. This edition
Batavierenrace will be the one and only Bata44race, referring to the
Dutch word ‘vieren’, which is the plural form of the word ‘four’. The
real BataVIEREN get the opportunity to write their names in the
history books of the Batavierenrace by running across the finish line
on the brand new running track as quickly as possible. And there’s
more good news, because for a change the sun will be shining this
Batavierenrace edition, if the weather gods keep their promise at
least!
What is
happening
Besides this, the Bata44race’s formula for success is the same as
always: no sleep, having a lot of fun in a cramped van, a couple of
heavy kilometers in a lost place, and of course the Batavierenparty to end the day with a bang! But
the Bata44race is more than sweat, changing vests and funny outfits, as we can also raise a lot of
money for the charity Bata4life together! By doing this the scientists that are conducting research
on combating cancer can make progress just like the runners of the Bata44race do during the race,
in order to reach a world in which no one dies from cancer in the long run.
Flash back
After months of preparation everybody is finally ready. For most of the runners the preparations
will have consisted of several tough workouts to be able to be in top shape for the Bata44race after
all the weight that was gained by eating too many Christmas dishes. Meanwhile, the different
committees of the Batavierenrace are busy to make sure that the Bata44race will be once again
a safe, fair and spectacular event. For us as the organisation of the Bata44race the preparations
already started in September. After a lot of meetings, explorations of the route and cups of coffee
and tea, the Bata44race is finally here!
Runners route
I would like to thank all the participants and everyone who has participated in realizing the
44th edition of the Batavierenrace. Special thanks to our committee members, our sponsors, all
concerned municipalities, the University of Twente, Radboud University Nijmegen, the board of
the Batavierenrace foundation and last but not least all volunteers that will put on a burgundy
sweater this weekend in order to make this edition of the Batavierenrace a big success.
Car route
On behalf of the whole Organising Committee I would like to wish everyone an unforgettable
weekend. I will see you at the start, on the route, at the finish and of course at the Batavierenparty.
Let’s celebrate your athletic performances and efforts here!

Prefaces
The Bata44race
The 44th edition of the Batavierenrace is, as it is each year, a true fest.
It was founded in a time where people weren’t sure if the runners that
went to Germany in the middle of the night would return, and now has
the possibilities to track every move of the runners. This is exactly
what the challenge for the nine organising students of this years’
edition is. Their challenge is to do steps forward; not only to keep up
with time, but to be ahead of their time. And what about the runners?
They run their time, whether they’re shitty or shoddy, whether they’re
trained or lost a bet in the bar. There is an ideal mix of the ambition of
winning and the simple wish to participate. Each student has its own
motivation to participate at the Batavierenrace at least once in their
studentship and to go nuts at the big fraternization party. And after this one time, many more will
follow, because the Batavierenrace is addictive. It is the best addiction possible. Enjoy your time
together, give each other space. Have some respect for all the volunteers, who make sure that the
Bata44race, is THE event of the year.
Let’s start running!
Rob Cuppen
Chairman of the foundation Batavierenrace
Dear Batavierenrace participant,
One could regard a students’ life as top sport: studying, working out, keeping up with friends and
making money with a casual job; juggling all these activities in everyday life can be seen as an
achievement on its own. Combining these aspects can create a
strong student, both physically and mentally.
As an expert in the broadcasting of students I also know that our
best temporary workers are often students who in addition to their
studies also practice a sport and stand in the middle of the student
life.
SUSA knows that study and some free time are the most important
for students. Therefore SUSA makes sure that students can earn
money with a flexible job next to studying. At SUSA, students can
organise their own life and divide study, work and leisure his or
44
her way.

Important
information
In our eyes it is important that we contribute to students who sport, and Batavierenrace is a great
example.
Behind the
scenes
This year, the 44th edition of the Batavierenrace, is guaranteed to be a great success. Obviously, we
from SUSA will be present encourage the sporting students during this event! On behalf of SUSA I
want to wish all participants a sporty and exciting event!
Remco Pouw
Director SUSA
What is
happening
Dear participant,
You are standing on the threshold of a major challenge: the 44th edition of the Batavierenrace.
Along with 8500 participants you will participate in one of the largest running relay races in the
world. As in recent years, this edition supports KWF Cancer
Society. Last year, Bata4Life almost collected €12.000, -. This is
a great achievement!
Flash back
KWF is determined to beat cancer as quickly as possible. Our
ideal is a world where no one dies of cancer anymore. Our goal:
less people with cancer, more people who cure and a better
quality of life for cancer patients. To achieve this, we raise funds
with which we fund and guide cancer research.
Runners route
In the last few years, a lot of progress has been made in increasing
the chances of living longer with cancer, or survival of cancer.
Nevertheless, the harsh reality is that still almost 40% of patients
die within five years after diagnosis. We cannot and will not
accept this: the number of mortality must be reduced. Thanks to support from the Batavierenrace
we are getting closer to the day when no one has to die from cancer anymore.
I wish you - with all participants, organisers, sponsors, volunteers and all others involved in the
Batavierenrace - good luck, perseverance and fun. We are proud of you!
Car route
Together, we are getting closer!
Michel Rudolphie
Managing Director KWF

Contest rules 44th Batavierenrace
Contest Rules 44th Batavierenrace (23 April 2016); Last modified: 11 February 2016
General
1.
The Batavierenrace is an annual student relay race between the Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Twente, organised by the
Organising Committee of the Batavierenrace Association.
2.
The Batavierenrace has the following official bodies:
a.
The Organising Committee, taking care of the organisation of the competition;
b.
The Competition Committee, being responsible for the safety and general progress of the competition during the race;
c.
The Contest Administration being responsible for processing the results, presenting the results and handling objections;
d.
The Doctors, taking care of the medical support during the race.
3.
Teams participating in the Batavierenrace submit to the Registration Rules and these Competition Rules.
4.
The Dutch Competition Rules are leading in all cases. This translation is only provided as a convenience.
5.
When the Competition Rules do not provide a solution, the responsible body decides.
6.
The official bodies reserve the right to occasionally depart from the Contest Rules.
Competition Layout
7.
The Batavierenrace distinguishes three classifications: the Topicus University Competition (UC), the General Classification (AK) and the Company
Classification (BK). A team only participates in one classification.
8.
Participants in the UC and AK classifications must have been registered as a student at a university at any time after 23 April 2015.
9.
The Batavierenrace consists of 25 stages, divided into 9 women’s and 16 men’s stages, as listed in the participant’s booklet.
10.
The published distances of stages and running speeds are only indicative.
11.
The start of the competition will take place in Nijmegen. There are three restart locations: Ulft, Barchem and Enschede.
a.
The (re)starts in Nijmegen, Ulft and Barchem are divided into seven starting groups.
b.
In Enschede stages 24 and 25 will start. Those stages follow the same route. Two restarts take place here, one for all runners of stage 24 and
one for all runners of stage 25.
12.
The route and stage layout can be changed by the Organising Committee and the Competition Committee if this is desired through circumstances. In
special circumstances, these bodies may cancel (part of) a stage or the entire competition.
13.
At every stage, per team, a different runner is running the stage. The change of runner happens by passing on a vest in the trap at the switch point. At a
stage ending at a restart location, the vest will not be transferred in the trap; the next stage starts at the restart location.
14.
Each stage has its own limit time which is published in the participant’s booklet with errata. The limit time is the maximum time a runner may take to
finish the stage. The Contest Administration has the right to change the limit time in special circumstances.
15.
Teams are solely responsible for the transport of participants between the switch points and the timely arrival of the right runner at every switch point.
16.
The switch points are indicated by a trap, switch point port and a bus. The trap starts at the switch point port and ends at the last chained pole.
17.
Switch points are manned during the time indicated in the participant’s booklet, unless the last runner has passed before the specified closing time.
Outside the specified opening duration, results are not registered.
18.
Switch points can have an earliest and/or last starting time, as published in the participant’s booklet. Runners cannot start before the earliest starting
time. At the last starting time all runners who have not started yet, should start, even if the previous runner has not arrived yet.
19.
The Competition Committee and Contest Administration are able to impose sanctions if teams do not abide the provisions of these Competition
rules or if the circumstances justify such sanctions. Sanctions include applying a penalty time to the team or individual runner, disqualifying a
team or runner, and/or removing the team or runner from the competition. Furthermore, a team may receive an official warning, a second of which
automatically leads to a disqualification of the entire team.
20.
At the day of the competition, preliminary results will be published. The official results will be published on the website on Friday after the competition.
21.
Prices for the top 3 of each classification will be granted based on the official results. Other prices are granted based on the preliminary results.
22.
Objections about the preliminary results can only be directed to the Contest Administration. The Contest Administration can be reached during the
competition by telephone, email and the website. Directly after the competition, objections can be directed personally in Enschede. Until Wednesday
after the competition, it is possible to direct objections through email and the website.
23.
Complaints about the treatment of objections can be directed at the Organising Committee in Nijmegen. This does not have any influence on the result
of the objection.
Order Provisions
24.
Every participant takes part at his or her own risk. The Batavierenrace Association cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage to personal
property or any personal injuries.
25.
The Dutch and German Traffic laws, as well as all other regulations, will remain in force during the competition.
26.
Instructions of the police and staff of the Batavierenrace must be followed immediately and strictly.
27.
All organisation vehicles must be granted immediate passage throughout the race.
28.
In case of accidents or serious injuries, a staff member of the Batavierenrace has to be contacted immediately (after contact with emergency services).
This staff member will contact the Competition Committee or a Doctor. The victim must wait until help arrives.
29.
It is strictly forbidden to make (noise) disturbances during the race, especially during the nightly stages.
30.
Participants are not allowed to use doping or be under the influence of any narcotics (including alcohol and drugs) during the race, except when this is
required for medical reasons.
31.
Disabled participants can participate in the Batavierenrace in consultation with the Organising Committee in Nijmegen. The name of this person and
the stage that he or she is going to complete has to be communicated in advance, so that volunteers of the Batavierenrace can reckon with this person.
For disabled participants no additional security measures or other arrangements are made.
32.
Team captains should attend the team captain instruction in Nijmegen on Friday before the race. The exact time and location are announced in team
captain letter 3.
33.
Sponsor claims before and during the race and prize ceremony can be prohibited by the organisation, after which these must be removed or covered
immediately.
34.
The Batavierenrace Assocation reserves the right to publish photos and filming of participants. All participants declare that they will not object to the
usage of photos or films of their portrait.
44
Runners and Cyclists
35.
Unless otherwise indicated, runners have to run on the right side of the road and each runner must be accompanied by exactly on cyclist. However, on
stage 24 and 25, the runner cannot be accompanied by a cyclist, taking the safety and the crowd into account.
36.
The routes, as described in the participant’s booklet with errata, are compulsory, unless other instructions are provided by the staff of the
Batavierenrace. The signs along the runner’s route are only there to clarify the route.
37.
When a runner needs to pre-emptively end his or her stage, this should be communicated to the following switch point. The next runner can start there.
38.
The bike will be checked by the organisation in Nijmegen on Friday before the race. The bike has to meet the legal standards (including good
functioning lights and brakes) and may not be broader than 50 cm with exception of the handlebars. The exact time and location of the checkpoint will
be announced in team captain letter 3.
39.
The cyclist may never go through the trap at the switch point. The trap must be passed on the left side, unless otherwise indicated.
Runners and Cyclists Vests
40.
Team captains must report at the distribution of the vests on Friday before the race in Nijmegen to receive the runner and cyclist vests. The exact time
and location will be announced in team captain letter 3.
10
Participants’ Vehicles
45.
Transportation of participants, who are not running or cycling the stage, has to take place along the car’s route as published in the participant’s booklet
(completed with errata).
46.
For the participants’ vehicles it is forbidden to use the runners’ route, except for the parts where the car’s route and the runners’ route coincide. Where
those routes coincide the speed should be adjusted in such a way that the safety of the runners is guaranteed. The vehicles may never drive directly in
front of, behind or next to the runner.
47.
Each team can use only one participants’ vehicle. If a team wants to make use of two participants’ vehicles, permission should be requested at the
Organising Committee in Nijmegen before 1 April 2016. In this case the skipping route should be used consistently.
48.
All participants’ vehicles must be vehicles that can be legally driven by any driver holding a valid Dutch driving license B. Trailers are not allowed.
49.
Bus placards, which are distributed by the organisation, should be placed on every participants’ vehicle, visible on the passenger’s side on the inside of the
windshield and clearly visible on the back of the vehicle.
50.
Parking has to be done as described in the participant’s booklet and will be marked by signs or by the present staff.
Competition Provisions
51.
The running time is the finish time minus the start time if both are registered correctly. Times are registered in whole seconds.
52.
As start time may apply:
a.
The (re)start time in Nijmegen, Ulft, Barchem or Enschede;
b.
The automatically or manually registered finish time of the previous runner;
c.
The time of a start, led by a staff member at the switch point, which will be applied if there is no finish or a finish outside the specified earliest and
last starting time.
53.
As finish time may apply the automatically or manually registered finish time at the switch point.
54.
The automatic time registration is attended with a sound and light signal. The runner has to pay attention to this signal and, if this signal is not perceived,
the runner has to warn a staff member immediately. Only then the time can still be registered. The runner is responsible for the time registration.
55.
Runners who are delayed by e.g. waiting for railway crossings or taking wrong turns are not compensated.
56.
Based on article 19 the Contest Administration can decide to assign a penalty or declare a running time invalid if any violation is observed. When a runner
is disqualified or when the running time is not representative (e.g. articles 62 to 64), the running time is always declared invalid.
57.
The classification time is the running time, possibly with additional penalty time. The maximum classification time is the limit time plus 15 minutes.
When there is no valid running time, the classification time is equal to the maximum.
58.
The running time cannot exceed the limit time. When the limit time is exceeded, the classification time is equal to the maximum classification time.
59.
Runners can only start at a switch point after the vest is transferred through the finishing runner in the trap, unless the transfer of the vest could not take
place. An invalid switch will be penalized with 15 minutes penalty time.
60.
If a male runs on a women’s stage, the penalty time will be a factor 0.4 of the running time. No compensation will be granted for women running a men’s
stage.
61.
A participant can participate in only one team and in only one stage. If the runner runs more stages, every additional stage will be penalized with 15
minutes penalty time.
62.
It is not allowed to disaggregate stages. Every stage can only be ran by one runner per team.
63.
It is not allowed to shorten stages without permission of the Competition Committee.
64.
It is not allowed for a runner to move themselves other than by running, unless otherwise permitted by the Organising Committee in Nijmegen.
65.
A runner can be excluded and removed from the competition by a Doctor for medical reasons. The classification time will then equal the limit time.
66.
Teams may not hinder others in the broadest sense.
67.
A team that has an invalid running time at more than five stages will be included in the results outside the competition.
68.
When two teams achieve the exact same time, the running time of the final stage is decisive.
Special Provisions
69.
At a (re)start the runner is allowed to start only at the official starting time. It is not allowed to start in another starting group than the team is assigned
to. If the previous runner has not completed his or her stage yet, the runner has to start in the assigned starting group. If there is no other possibility
because of the circumstances, the staff at the information desk should be informed.
70.
It is not allowed for participant’s vehicles to visit switch point 3. A runner-cyclist switch is therefore required at this switch point, meaning that the
runner on stage 3 must be a cyclist on stage 4 and vice versa. Violation of this rule will result in the times of both stages to be declared invalid.
71.
Stage 24 can only be completed by a female runner. If this is not possible, the team cannot start at this stage.
72.
For runners it is not allowed to carry attributes that could cause any disturbance or danger for participants, spectators or equipment at the final switch
point port of stage 24 and 25. Such attributes may be taken by staff members of the Batavierenrace.

Additional Provisions Topicus University Competition
73.
Articles 74 to 79 only apply to teams participating in the Topicus University Competition and have priority over the articles mentioned above.
74.
A team and the runners of the team must meet the standards for participating in the Topicus University Competition as described in the Registration
Rules.
75.
In advance of the (re)start of their starting group, the runner must personally report to the University Competition Verification with valid identification
(passport, ID card or driver’s license, copies are not accepted). The runner will receive a wrist brand here.
76.
Immediately after completing his or her stage, a runner should have their wrist band cut off in the original state, by a staff member at the switch point.
This is the own responsibility of the runner.
77.
The classification for the NSK (Dutch Student Championship) Batavierenrace is determined based on the official results of the Topicus University
Competition. Only universities having a sports council associated with Studentensport Nederland (SSN) are included.
78.
The limit time is equal to the University Competition limit time published in the participant’s booklet. The Contest Administration has the right to change
the limit time in special circumstances.
79.
The maximum classification time (Article 57) is equal to the University Competition limit time.

42.
The runners vest must be worn by the runner and the vest number must be visible at any time. The runner must wear the vest until after finishing his or
her stage. If the Competition Committee has decided that runners’ vests do not have to be worn, the runner should always carry the runners vest with him
or her.
At the restart in Enschede runners must report to the organisation, half an hour before the specified starting time of stage 24 at the latest, in order to
receive bib numbers. On stages 24 and 25 these bib numbers will be used instead of the vest. The bib number must be visible at any time.
If a runner has to start without a vest, the runner has to start with a temporary bib number and the team has to bring the vest to the active runner as soon
as possible. A temporary bib number can be requested at a switch point or an information desk. When a vest is no longer available, a temporary vest can
be requested at a switch point.
The cyclist is obliged to wear the cycling vest at any time and to make sure the vest number is visible.

What to do in extreme weather?
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE THE RACE!
Hot weather
What is
happening
Behind the
scenes
The risk of heat-related health problems resulting from increased effort begin to arise at the
ambient temperature of 19°C. The combination of high temperatures with high humidity and
low wind speed increases the stress of the body to cool down. Some important tips for hot
weather conditions:
• Drink enough before, during and after your run. About 150-250 ml. per 15 minutes.
Preferably an isotonic sports drink and not only water;
• Drink before getting thirsty;
• Make sure you eat enough, sugars and salts have to be complemented;
• Wear thin, light and airy clothes;
• Do not wear a cotton t-shirt: this kind of t-shirts get moisty very fast and make it hard for
your body to cool down;
• Avoid direct sunlight and try to find a shady spot; when running in direct sunlight
consider wearing a sports hat;
• Keep an eye on each other!
Runners route

Cold weather / rain
There is a chance of low temperatures during the nightshift. Rain during the Batavierenrace is
a possibility as well. The risk of hypothermia increases when temperatures are low. Especially
when these low temperatures are combined with moisture and high wind speeds. Some tips
in cold or wet weather conditions:
• Make sure you keep moving. Otherwise you will cool down quickly;
• Seek shelter from wind and rain;
• Make sure you have dry, spare clothes with you. Take off your wet clothes as soon as
possible after the race;
• Do not use isolating rainwear during running, but before and after the race. If you want
to wear rain gear during the race, choose airy clothing;
• Keep an eye on each other!
Car route
The possibility exists that certain routes will be shortened or skipped due to extreme weather
conditions. The organisation of the Batavierenrace will take this decision, when necessary.
Please follow the instructions of the organisation at the restart and relay points and stick to
the decisions they make!

Behind the scenes
Yeah, it has finally started, you are now participating in the world’s largest relay race for
students! Perhaps, you were looking forward to this event for months or maybe you just have
been asked by a desperate team captain at the last moment. In any case, we can tell you that
we have been working for months with a lot of fun to make a success of this event! Most of the
members of the Organising Committee have also been a participant and have been standing
with this booklet in their hand. We are just a group of students who did not know at first how
big the organisation behind the Batavierenrace was. The organisation of the Batavierenrace
is supported by several committees and we are very happy with their help! Without them, it
would not be possible to make such a great event possible. In addition, we must not forget the
volunteers of this race, around 650 of them help this year with great enthusiasm for which
we are very grateful.
44
In this chapter we will tell you more about the organisation of the Batavierenrace. You can
read more about the Organising Committee, the various committees, volunteers, and the
Committee of Recommendation.

A year in the Organising Committee
What is
happening
Behind the
scenes
Each year the Batavierenrace is organised by a group of students who are divided over two
cities: Nijmegen and Enschede. This year we have prepared the Batavierenrace with nine
students. Four students did their preparations in Nijmegen and five students did this in
Enschede. These students have tasks of two different fields: “External Relations & Facilities”
(ER&F) and “Competition, Route and Security” (CRS). The students with the ER&F tasks
ensure that enough portable toilets are available, everyone can get something to eat, and
that everyone has the possibility to sleep. Tasks of ER&F can also be more exciting, such as
arranging big sponsor contracts, organising an awesome start and finish, ensuring that the
fantastic moments of the race are recorded, and ensuring that the volunteers and Organising
Committee are dressed well in their Bata sweaters and Bata blouses. The students with the
CRS tasks ensure that every runner knows which way they need to go, the team captains are
informed well, and that vests are returned. In addition, the tasks of CRS can be more exciting,
such as ensuring that the entire route is arranged, each runner finishes safely, and that the
volunteers and various committees can do their work in a good way and are having fun.
Besides the tasks of the two fields, there are a number of regular functions, such as president,
vice president, treasurer, and secretary.
Runners route
Flash back
Perhaps, you have a better idea now of what the Organising Committee is doing a whole year.
However, the Organising Committee does not just accomplish the tasks. The first two months,
you are doing a lot of team building activities. Firstly, you have some days in which you are
introduced your specific tasks. Secondly, you have a policy weekend. Lastly, you are helping
in various running events. In this way you can experience what it is like to be a volunteer
and you can get some inspiration for your own event. In addition to these team building
activities, you are also busy with getting in contact with your committees, boards of various
sport councils and student associations. In a short time you get to know a lot of new people
who are super excited and infected with the “Bata-virus”. Eventually it is already January and
you are getting very busy with your duties. It is almost time for starting the race, the moment
you have worked for months. Around 8500 participants are coming to start their stage and to
enjoy the party after it.
The year can be filled up with many more activities. An exploration of the route by bicycle,
Car route
various receptions and parties with nice people, birthdays and crazy trips. It is a year full of
pleasant activities and challenges, you will learn a lot!
17
The year of secretary Marleen
After four introduction days in Enschede and Nijmegen we learned more
about our tasks and even more about the persons of the Organising
Committee, we started with our first day as 44th Organising Committee
on Monday 31 August. We were sitting with the four of us in the office of
Nijmegen and we had no idea where to start.. The first weeks we were
busy with travelling throughout the Netherlands as costumed Batavians,
tying the president of the “Hart van Brabantloop” to a tree, getting to
know the various boards at constitution drinks and winning the beer relay
race of all sport councils. The latter was just not quite succeeded.
For me the organisation of the Batavierenrace was not only a whole new beginning of my
student life, but also living in Nijmegen and tasting the atmosphere of this city. I am not
studying in Nijmegen, but in Amsterdam and I am quite accustomed to our capital city. Many
people asked why I actually wanted to organise the Bata in Nijmegen.
This is a difficult question. However, I can tell you now that I have no
regrets. It is a possibility to get to know a whole new city, to organise
a great event, and to be part of a large “family” of people who have
a heart for the Bata. In this year I have experienced that very often
things can go wrong, but that there is a solution for every problem and
that eventually you will laugh about your mistakes. Our first mistake
began during our exploration of the route by bicycle. Two tandems were broken. One even in
the middle of the grasslands in Germany. After a harsh ride we finally found a bicycle shop
which was opened after 3 hours waiting. In the meantime, we have entertained ourselves
nearby a retirement home.
44
I have also learned a lot as secretary. Not only by recording the important points in a meeting,
which is not always a very pleasant task, but also by answering emails with special and
specific questions. As secretary you have an overview of what is happening in the Organising
Committee, you take care of the newsletters and sending the various cards to externals and
volunteers. This year I was also responsible for restart
Ulft, the photo and film crews and this participant
booklet. In addition to these tasks, I have met the
Foundation Board, committees, coordinators, and
many volunteers who like to visit our office. There is
a nice ambiance at the Batavierenrace and often the
work does not stop at 17:00 h. Then we are staying
to work seriously or less seriously while enjoying a
drink.

information
Time registration
Of course, you participate in the Batavierenrace because it is fun, but it is also nice to know
how fast you can run. Below you will read how the time registration system of the
Batavierenrace works, where to find the official and unofficial results and how to file a
protest if you do not agree with the results.
Time registration
At each relay point, the time of a finished
runner is registered at the registration gate.
The chip in the vest (racing bib) is read out
here. In addition, the numbers of the runners
are read by the relay point-teams. Therefore, it
is important that the runner keeps the vest on
and does not take it off until after the gate. Pay
attention here: each runner is responsible for
his/her own registration.
In the picture to the right an example of a relay point situation, that you will encounter. The
runner passes through the gate while the cyclist passes the gate at the left side. To check the
registration of the running time, the runner must pay attention to the light signal, sound
signal and the information display. In order to avoid disturbing the time registration, you
should not take your mobile phone anywhere around around the gate nor stay around too
long after you finished. Cyclists may never pass through the gates! The part of the area after
the gate is only open for runners who begin or end a stage here. Spectators are asked to
remain outside of this area in order not to disrupt the arriving or departing runners.
44
Publication preliminary results
The time shown on the display is the preliminary time of the incoming runner. The display
shows the ranking in the race up to that stage as well. Possible penalty time has not been
added to this time yet. The registered time is wirelessly sent to Enschede. In Enschede the
times are being checked and possible penalty time will be added. The officious results are
also available during the race at www.batavierenrace.nl.
File a protest
During the race, protests can only be filed to the Contest Administration by phone. The
Contest Administration can be reached at phone number +31(0)53-4895333. In Enschede,
protests can be filed between the times of 6:30 to 7:30 h, in the Sports Centre. The published
results after the race are unoffious due to the possibility of protested results. Note that it is
possible to contest your results until Wednesday (April 27th) after the race; this is done by
E-mailing to the Organising Committee at protesten@batavierenrace.nl.

Committees of the Batavierenrace
The Batavierenrace cannot be such a great event without the dedication of its diverse committees
that are active throughout the year. More information about these comittees can be read below.
Behind the
scenes
Bata4life
Members of this committee are settled in Nijmegen and Enschede. They are responsible for the
publicity of the Bata4life action. They organise activities to raise money and to involve every
participant of the Batavierenrace.
What is
happening
Bataradio
Bataradio is the radio station of the Batavierenrace. They make a well-filled radio program during
the race and this is broadcasted on Enschede FM (105.1 FM), batavierenrace.nl, and through the
official batavierenapp. Come and take a look at the radio station in the Sports Centre of Enschede!
eBART
This committee is responsible for developing and maintaining our own time registration: BART,
the Batavierenrace Automatic Logging, Timekeeping System before and during the race. This
system is checked and updated every edition of the race.

Icie
The Icie is the committee that is responsible for all IT systems of the Batavierenrace. The website,
batavierenapp, online results presentation, photo plan and the central database are developed by
this committee. The central database contains complete information about the teams, volunteers,
materials and vehicles.
Runners route
Motorcyclists
The motorcyclists ensure the security of the route and manage the parking of all vans at the relay
points. In addition, they give advice to the captains of the motorcyclist teams and the reserve
motorcyclists about possible changes of the route.

Radio Communication Service (RCS)
This committee regulates all communication during the race. The world´s largest relay race has
an impressive communication network. Everything is communicated via the command center of
the RCS, such as consultations with doctors, relay point teams, contest management, and people
who are managing the signage.
21
Contest Management
This committee is repsonsible for the security and progress of the race. They are working during
the year to accomplish a variety of protocols in order to ensure safety.
Contest Administration
This committee is responsible for a correct final result of the Batavierenrace. The contest
administration has an advisory role in the preparation period of the race. They give advice about
the Contest Rules, the Registration Rules and the texts in the team captains’ letters. During the
race this committee processes the results and protests.

The race of..
In addition to the Organising Committee, there are many other volunteers helping to make a
success of the Batavierenrace. A number of them describe their experiences of the race below.
What is
happening
Behind the
scenes
Koen Reintjes - Start coordinator
I have participated eight times in the Batavierenrace,
I have been in the Organisation Committee once and
I have been the coordinator of the start for three
times now. Yes, I am infected with the “Bata-virus”.
That is why you can find me at the starting area again
this year. As a coordinator of the start, I and a few
other coordinators, make sure all teams are able to
start on time. On Friday I am running around to get
everything at the right place at the right time. All 350 team captain bags, the materials for all
150 motorcyclists, signage, coffee for all the volunteers in the race and so on. Very hectic but
also very fun to do! At 3:00 h it is time to go to sleep, but on Saturday I am running in the
afternoon-shift, because….you just have to run!
Runners route
Flash back
Harm van Hassel - 5-minutes cyclist
Since eight years, I am the 5-minutes cyclist of the Batavierenrace.
During the race, I cycle 5 minutes in front of the first runner from
Nijmegen to Enschede. My task is to check the course for the last
time. It gives an indication for all the other volunteers that the
runners are coming so they know that they have to be prepared.
The nice part of this task is that I experience the whole race, and
be a part of a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers that made this race
possible every year. Besides my activities during the race, I do
some small tasks for the organisation committee as well to make
the race a big success every year.
Car route
Jop van Roosmalen - Motorcyclist Committee
As a member of the motorcyclist committee I have been busy last year with preparations
for the decisive moment: the Batavierenrace. During the Batavierenrace I make sure that
one (of several) team(s) motorcyclists are at the
right time in the right place. The traffic on the
route must be arranged! We do this in three
different places: in the night, the morning and
the afternoon. Each Batavierenrace is different,
but the absurdity and fun makes it always an
adventure. Because in which situation do you
drive with 30 motors through the “Achterhoek”
at night with the taste of coffee in your mouth and
the hope for getting pancakes soon?
23
Danny van Uem - Contest Administration
Meanwhile, I have helped with the beautiful organisation of the
Batavierenrace for nine years and it is still not boring. Of those nine
years, I have been five years in the Contest Administration. If we take
place on Friday at the command center it is always the question what
this year will bring. Sure, each year we are working to get a correct
outcome, but in addition there are special incidents every year. Then
we need to improvise quickly to solve the problems. Ultimately, for
us, a successful race is a race without many troubles and when we can
present the correct outcome in the evening after the race. Last but
not least, it is important that we all had a good time in het command
center.
Teun Dings - Relay Point Crew Coordinator
Last year, relay point crew E began with their journey around one o’clock h in a very loaded van.
Unfortunately, the bat mobile was not heavy enough to prevent that the police treated us on a
nighttime photo, for a paltry 4 mph too fast. Fifteen minutes later, we had even less luck. We got
the message: “Bata 254, the portable toilets at relay point 5 are locked.” Fortunately, other relay
point crews had also many difficulties. Runners without
cyclist, cyclists without runner, and runners without a
team were passed their relay point. Yet, even though it
sounds like a cliché: the Batavierenrace is so much fun
(as you can see on the market in Enschede), that this
year we are present again together with those lost and
abandoned runners!
44
Daan Weerheijm - Medical care
During the Batavierenrace medical care is provided by six doctors and one First-Aid team. While
the race is going, there is hardly any time for a break. The
doctors spend 18 hours in and around their vehicles, and
although medical support is not often needed, they have to
stay alert. The constant radio-chatter may contain a medical
emergency. The doctors drive between the runners and not
all roads are suited for the cars. This makes it an exhausting
drive, especially when you need to overtake a lot of runners
without hindering anyone. However, when medical care
is needed, be it a sprained ankle or heatstroke, a doctor is
always near. How are the doctors staying fit during these 18
hours? With powernaps and pancakes!

Comittee of Recommendation
Classic race
What is
happening
Behind the
scenes
The Batavierenrace is a classic race. It was good, is still good and
will always be good. Not many events actually survive the evolution
of running (trends, hypes). Which of the events that are around now
will still be alive in 30-40 years? The Batavierenrace is a beautiful
monument which reminds us of the first running wave that flooded
over us from the US in the seventies and infiltrated in the student
culture of Nijmegen and Twente. Of course I participated in the
Batavierenrace multiple times and by deeply inhaling there was no
other way than for that other classic, the Zevenheuvelenloop, to be
born. On top of the waves of the first Batavierenrace.
- Henk Stevens, Founder and organiser of the first 25 editions of the Zevenheuvelenloop
Flash back
Dear participant,
Enschede is a city where we constantly look for the connection. Working together to ultimately
achieve a particular result. Whether we are talking about entrepreneurs, students or about sports.
Runners route
Within Batavierenrace, all three are united; a relay marathon for
enterprising students who are really making an effort and are
sportive. It is an event that needs to be on the Enschede calendar.
For in Enschede, everyone is making an effort. Therefore, I am sure
that the 44th edition of the Batavierenrace will be a resounding
success again.
Car route
- Onno van Veldhuizen, Mayor of Enschede
25
The greatness of the Batavierenrace
This year the Batavierenrace is taking place for the 44th time: the biggest relay of the world
(175 kilometers) that finishes at ‘our’ University of Twente. The event is not only huge as far
as numbers of runners are concerned (about 8500 students),
but also because of the large number of people involved in the
organisation: 650 in total. Without them there would be no
Batavierenrace, as the organisation rightly states on its website.
Therefore the Bata is not only a huge event from a sportive
point of view, but also an event that shows how cooperation and
shared enthusiasm can lead to the best results.
I will allways remember the years that I took my place at the
start of this race as a student. I hope the contestants of this race
will have the same golden memories that I enjoy. Therefore, it is
with great enthusiasm that I, as member of the Committee of
Photographer: Janita Sassen
Recommendation thoroughly endorse this Batavierenrace.
I wish you all a great sports event, positive cooperation and of course a great party afterwards!
- Drs. Ank Bijleveld-Schouten, King’s Commissioner in Overijssel
Real European exchange though student sport.
‘On behalf of the European Network of Academic Sport Services (ENAS), I want to
congratulate the organiation of the (already) 44th edition of the Batavierenrace. It gives me
great pleasure to endorse this fantastic event. The Batavierenrace brings together so many
students from all over Europe and offers exceptional opportunities to enjoy sport, to meet
people, to expand your horizons and most of all to have a lot of
fun! I am confident that also for you and your team it will be a
great experience and exchange.
ENAS has more than 120 active members (all higher education
institutions) from 21 different countries and we believe in
networking for better student sport. Therefore, we fully support
the Batavierenrace in any way we can and we hope that even
more students from even more countries will join and enjoy the
event in the future! Best of luck to you and your team. Enjoy
and stay safe!’

Sleeping places Enschede
Once the race is over you can stay in Enschede and enjoy the festival-like mood. The
organisation offers two different sleeping arrangements. You can either choose to sleep in the
Sports Centre or you can stay at the campsite.
When you want to spend the night in the Sports Centre you need a sleeping ticket. If you did
not purchase these you can still buy them at the information desk in the Sports Centre. It is
not allowed to drink or smoke in the Sports Centre.
The University of Twente campus provides three campsites where you can set up your tent.
The campsites are shown on the map on page 79: Carilloncamping (CC), Hockeycamping
(HB) and Vlindercamping (VC). You can see the Sports center (SPC) as well on the same map.
To ensure that everybody uses the campsite correctly, some rules were set up which should be
followed when using the campsite:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Vehicles may not be parked on or near the campsite! If you park here you risk a penalty.
Vehicles have to be parked at the parking lot (see the map on page 79).
The campsites have been marked with lines. Make sure your tent is inside the lines, this
is due to the possible fire risk.
Leave a three meter gap between tents.
Large (army)tents, caravans and party tents are not allowed. A tent with a capacity of six
people is the maximum allowed size.
Fire is forbidden, this also includes barbecues.
Bringing glass (which includes beer bottles) is strictly forbidden. Glass is not allowed
anywhere on the campus.
Professional security and police will be present at all times. However, never leave any
valuables unattended. Lockers are available in the Sports Centre. The organisation cannot
be held responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings. The authorities should always
be contacted in case of theft.
Calamities should always be reported to the supervisors. They can be found at the
campsites.
To ensure that everybody get a good nights sleep, keep your noise levels to a minimum
at the campsites.
Throw your trash into the garbage bins. Garbage bags are available from the supervisors
who can be found at the campsites. Garbage bags can also be found in the team captain’s
bag.
All teams should have left the campsite by Sunday morning 11 o’clock.
44
We would like to put extra emphasis on cleaning your own mess i.e. picking
up your garbage and throwing this into the garbage bins. If this is not done
sufficiently, free camping at the campsite could become jeopardized the
following year. So make sure your trash ends up in a garbage bag!

Make an effort for Bata4life!
This is the fourth time in a row the organisation of the Batavierenrace makes a
big effort for Bata4life together with their volunteers and participants. With this
initiative money will be collected for the Dutch Cancer Society. The total proceeds
of Bata4life will be used for scientific research to cancer within the Dutch
universities.
Three years ago this initiative was founded in the run up to the Batavierenrace to provide each
participant with the possibility to support a charity. The choice for the Dutch Cancer Society
has been made consciously, because everyone gets in touch with this awful disease somehow.
The improvement of the treatments of cancer will come from the different universities of the
participants of the Batavierenrace. That is why the Batavierenrace makes an effort to support
scientific research to cancer.
With enthusiastic students form Nijmegen and Enschede a special committee has been formed:
the Bata4life committee. This committee will work together with the organisation of the
Batavierenrace to make the most out of Bata4life this year! Top swimmer Joost Reijns tells his
story:
“July 28, 2012, the date that the Olympic Games in London would begin for me. Years of hard
training had to come together that one day in the perfect race. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
While training for the Olympics, I was told the terrible news that I had testicular cancer with
metastases in my left lymph. My dream disappeared in one moment.
How could that terrible disease end up in my healthy body? At the time of hearing, I was in the
shape of my life. Until then my life had been very structured and suddenly there were doubts
about how my future would look like. There was one thing for sure: if I recovered I would start
to pursue my dream again.
Unfortunately, the metastases after chemotherapy were not gone and a 2nd surgery was
needed. By a customized treatment plan, I luckily underwent the four chemotherapy sessions
without too many side effects. Now, in January 2016, I can say that I survived by this treatment
and I am following my dream: the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
While running through the various treatments, I was often called a hero. I did not understand
why, the only thing I did was undergoing it. For me, the people who do the research and the
people who raise money to enable research are my heroes. So you are!
Enjoy, and good luck!”
Joost Reijns

You can find more information about Bata4life on www.bata4life.nl. The homepage shows the
current amount of collected money and everyone is free to donate. Through this site volunteers

History
Behind the
scenes
The Batavierenrace has its roots in Sweden. A couple of students from the Netherlands
participated in the SOLA relay race in Sweden and decided to organise a similar event in the
Netherlands. Inspired by the Batavians, who sailed down the Rhine in 50 B.C., they named
their race the Batavierenrace. In 1973 the first edition was held, which led from Nijmegen
to Rotterdam. Because of infrastructural problems they decided to change the route from
‘Nijmegen - Rotterdam’ to ‘NijmegenEnschede’ in 1974, but the name remained
the same. Since 1974, the route has barely
changed. What did change is the number of

participants: from 575 in 1973 to over 8500
in 2015.

Runners route
Flash back
On the 23rd of April 2016, the 44th edition of the Batavierenrace will take place. The
Batavierenrace is a relay race over 170 km from Nijmegen to Enschede, divided into 25 stages
(16 men’s stages and 9 women’s stages) varying from 3.6 km to 10.5 km. 350 teams, which
means more than 8,500 students, participate in this race. This number of participants gave us
a mention in the Guinness Book of Records. The Batavierenrace is a mixture of a competitive
sport-event as well as a big social event. At midnight on the 23rd of April the race starts and
the first runners will dive into the night for their heroic battle against the elements and the
temptations of a warm bed. This is the beginning of 18 hours of sportsmanship. Afterwards,
the biggest student party in Europe takes place, with over 12,000 visitors! In short: a great
opportunity to be out with your team for a few days and be part of a fantastic event!
37
Topicus University Competition
Also this year there will be a contest between the different university teams. These teams will
fight for the victory of the 44th Batavierenrace. However, these teams are not only fighting for
this victory. They also fight for the title of the Dutch Student Champion of the Batavierenrace
(NSK).
Because the university competition of the Batavierenrace is an NSK, there are stricter and
precise rules applied here. Before the race, all the runners of the UC-teams are strictly
checked. This will be done in several ways. In first place, every team must send a scheme of
the runners and a backup list with runners to the organisation. After that, the organisation is
going to check all the runners and backup runners. This will happen by checking the student
administrations of the different universities. When a runner is a student or is graduated less
than a year ago, the runner is allowed to compete.
Later on, the night of the race, a couple of hours before the start, there will be checked if all
the assigned runners are going to run the right stage. This will be checked during the race
through wristbands. At any (re)start, the runner will get a wristband which is cut off at a relay
point after running a track. If this isn’t being done correctly, a runner will get a penalty code
after which the Contest Administration will decide which penalty is issued. In this way we
hope to make the competition the as fair as possible.
44
During the 43rd Batavierenrace, the RU/Han Tshirtdruk.nl team from Nijmegen won with a
result of 10:14:40 hours. With this result, the team has set an all-time record in the university
competition. Furthermore, they are placed 10th in the general ranking, together with the
Wageningen University team of 2002 with an average speed of 16,66 km/h. The second
place last year was for the Amsterdamse Runnersworld team with a result of 10:18:47. The
third place was conquered by the ACLO RUG/Hanze team from Groningen with a result of
10:23:57.

University team Amsterdam Runnersworld – 2nd Place 43rd Batavierenrace
After several editions of finishing just shy of top-3 placement, we have once again shown our
best and most competitive side in 2015. The close team bond made the team willing to go
through fire for each other if necessary. Fire was our aim and fire was in our performance.
Amsterdam competed with the strongest selection of athletes in years up until the last stage
for first place. A wonderful performance that made everyone more motivated to start for first
place this year. One thing is certain: that place is for Amsterdam this year!

2015 was the year that we were the defending our championship. After the first place in 2014
we hoped to have a good shot at the first place again. After two good blocks in the night and
morning we were one of the top teams. But in the afternoon the teams from Nijmegen and
Amsterdam used their secret weapons. In the end we finished at a third place. After this we
had a big party that ended early in the morning. This year we will do our upmost best to

Batahazen - 30th place 43rd Bataverienrace
Our team Batahazen has been participating in the Batavierenrace for years. Last year we
had more women than men in our team, but we’re all sharing the same passion for running
- couldn’t be any different since we’re all from the
student athletics club in Nijmegen! We ended up on
the 30th place. This year we’re of course trying to do
even better, but what we know for sure is that it will
be a weekend full of fun, nice runs, happy camping
and an amazing party in Enschede!
G.S.S.V. Tjas Bierteam - 281st place 43rd Batavierenrace
Since three years the skating society G.S.S.V. Tjas from Groningen has a second team that is
called the Tjas-Bierteam. Instead of having a focus solely on running, as our Prestatie-Team
does, this team has its priorities set on the Bata-Party afterwards, where the team has been
known to party hard. For both the running and partying training started early this season.
Preparations consist of weekly drinks with the entire society, ever since the start of the season,
and at the beginning of this year special Bata-Training has
been implemented. Last year the Tjas-Bierteam finished
282nd, due to missing participants, cars taking the wrong
route, and flat tires. This year the team’s main goal is not
to lose participants, rank higher, and of course party as
hard as previous years!
S.B.V. Slopend - 297th place 43rd Batavierenrace
Like last years are we from S.B.V. Slopend from Delft joining the
Batavierenrace under our slogan: ‘Just that little bit more’. As
practitioners of surivalsport, running is a necessary part of the sport.
44
Therefore the Bata is a great event to be part of. Only we have our own
little twist for the Bata originating from the survivalsport: Running
with a wooden log. As previous years our goal is to run the entire
Batavierenrace with a wooden log. With this we give the Bata a little
Slopend flavor and finish with just that little bit more.

information
Explanation runnersroute
There are separate routes for cars and runners. The routes are described in this booklet. The
reminder signs have been placed along all the running routes to mark the right way. They have a
strictly supporting role.
Behind the
scenes
There will most likely be an errata for this booklet. Clearly write the changes to the route in this
booklet, not only for the night, but also for the morning and afternoon stages. Experience shows
that this is forgotten otherwise. In case you deviate from the route described in this booklet and
the errata, someone from the Organising Committee or the police will tell you. In all other cases
the participants’ booklet is leading. Behind each instruction you will find a zip code. This zip code
belongs to the location you are directed in. This zip code can be passed on to the organisation in
case of an emergency, so that the location of the emergency is known.
What is
happening
If you should continue along the road when crossing an intersection, only one direction sign is
placed immediately after the intersection in question.
Flash back
A turn is marked by two direction signs. The first sign is placed approximately 10-15 meters before
the intersection, the second sign on the road that should be followed. On long straight sections,
signs are placed at regular intervals. The following examples may serve as a clarification:

Noise
Each year there are several complaints of residents about the noise. These complaints can cause
trouble with the permits for the coming years. Because of the lack of routes in Germany, it is necessary to give penalties to participants who neglect the rules. The whole team will be disqualified in
this case. Music systems are allowed from Ulft.

Explanation Car route
Behind the
scenes
At every step along the car route, there will be two paths that can be taken. The first option
takes you to the next relay point (for example from 5 to 6). The second option is to skip a
relay point (for example from 5 to 7). When a relay point is skipped by the car, the runner
and cyclist will have to swap at that relay point. The distance mentioned after every section
is the driving distance to the next relay point (in km). The distance mentioned prior to a
certain section is the distance (in km) from the previous point. (See the explanation of the
car routes).
To skip a relay point (R.P.), observe the following procedure:
Leave from the R.P., follow the instructions in the left column until you reach the joining of
the two lines into a single line. After this, follow the single line.
What is
happening
When the single line splits into two lines once more, take the line to the right. The left line is
marked “relay point route” and the right line is marked “skip relay point route”. To skip the
relay point, continue along the marked route on the right line until it merges once more with
the left line. From this point on, take the left line. This will have had you skip a R.P.

So: where the “skip relay point” route deviates from the normal carroute, the description
has been split up to a description of the “skip R.P.” route (right side) and a description of
the route with which to reach the next R.P (left side). If these two routes are the same, the
description is in the centre of the page.

Caution: The usage of navigation systems is prohibited, because the might have

Did you take a close look at the errata and did you write them in this booklet? You can erase
the routes that you will not follow (e.g. Skip R.P route, or normal carroute) by putting a cross.
This will prevent you from following the wrong route.
