Why Shaw EverAgain Type 6 Nylon
with R2X
®
®
As the industry leader in residential and commercial carpet, Shaw has manufactured carpets
using every fiber system applicable. In fact, Shaw is the world’s largest producer of nylon and
PET carpet fibers. Through decades of research and business channel experience, Shaw and
Shaw’s customers have consistently found the following to be accurate:
Nylon fibers have consistently been found superior for resiliency when compared to other
fibers, including PET, PET SD, and PTT (triexta) fibers, in equally constructed carpets.
Protecting carpet fibers from the
top to the bottom, R2X’s patented
process allows carpet fibers to resist
soiling and stains significantly better.

Twist, pile weight, density and fiber (polyester, nylon,
PTT) are the most important factors in determining
the performance of carpets. Nylon fiber type
variations (Type 6 vs. Type 6,6) have proven irrelevant
in the overall picture of nylon carpet performance
comparisons.
Carpets made with Type 6 nylon fibers can be recycled
repeatedly into carpet fiber, with no loss of aesthetics or
performance. This capability presents the opportunity for landfill
avoidance. Shaw continues to divert hundreds of millions of
pounds of post-consumer Type 6 nylon carpet from landfills.
Nylon 6,6 currently has limited outlets or uses for fiber recycling.

Scoured fibers protected with R2X!
Why should carpet fibers be scoured? During yarn production,
an oil-based lubricant is required to allow the yarn to be
processed smoothly and with limited friction. Carpet scouring
is an important step in which the yarn lubricants are washed
from the yarn, removing the spin finish.
• Regardless of extrusion equipment types, scouring is the only effective method in properly removing spin finish.
• Non-scoured fibers will trap dirt and grease, degrading the fibers and leading to carpet damage.
• Many professional carpet cleaners have demonstrated that carpets not scoured or protected with R2X are more
difficult and expensive to clean.
(For more information, see Shaw’s Technical Bulletin “Scoured vs. Non-Scoured Carpet, dated May 2014)
Professional carpet cleaners agree –
nylon is the carpet fiber of choice for durability
and cleanability.

“I’ve been involved in the carpet care
industry since 1971 and I’ve seen a lot
of fibers and styles come and go. In my
judgement nothing compares to nylon in
terms of overall clean-ability and product
performance.When my customers ask me
what I recommend... without exception
my answer is nylon.”
–John Downey, Downey’s Carpet Care of
Granville, Granville, OH
“Polyester represesents the high price
of cheap. Soil and dirt come out much
better on nylon carpets.”

Nylon... Proven year after year, as the fiber of choice
Nylon has been the most popular and commonly used carpet fiber for over 50 years
• Nylon has proven to be the most versatile fiber, providing excellent style flexibility
• Exceptional life-cycle investment advantage
Type 6 vs. Type 6,6 Nylon
Myth Buster Comparisons
Are there performance differences in the nylon types?
Both types of nylon (either Type 6 or Type 6,6) have the same basic chemical composition, and there is no technical basis
for the belief that either has superior performance properties. Twist, pile weight, density and fiber (polyester, nylon, PTT)
are the most important factors in determining the performance of carpets.
Is there stain or soil resistance differences between the nylon fiber types?
Carefully controlled tests, where all processes and construction parameters were identical, have consistently
demonstrated clearly that fiber type has no impact on soiling rate. The more important factors to soiling rates have been
proven to be residual fiber finish, anti-soil treatments, post-installation treatments and cleaning residues. The patented
application of R2X® is, by far, the most effective variable in protecting against staining or soiling of the carpet . . . with
either Type 6 or 6,6.
Does Type 6,6 Nylon have superior colorfast qualities?
In solution-dyed fibers, 6 or 6,6 nylon provide the same outstanding protection against ozone fade. Regarding piece-dyed
nylon fibers, although there are very slight differences in how these untreated fiber types react to colorfast tests, this
difference was neutralized many years ago with the introduction of Shaw’s R2X Stain & Soil Resistance System. Carpets
treated with R2X have proven to provide more than enough protection against ozone fade, when applied to either 6 or
6,6 nylon.
Can both nylon fiber types currently be recycled into carpet?
Carpets made with Type 6 nylon can be recycled repeatedly into carpet fiber, with no loss of aesthetics or performance.
In addition, Shaw is the only carpet manufacturer with the commitment and ability to divert hundreds of millions of
pounds of post-consumer carpet from the landfill. Nylon 6,6 currently has limited outlets or uses for fiber recycling.
