This guide has been created to help the homeowner with their own home electrical projects.
Criteria for homeowners performing electrical work on their own home:
The home shall not be for sale, rent, lease or exchange for at least one year after all final inspections.
Only an owner and their immediate family (spouse, brother sister, son, daughter, mother or father) may
help with these projects. No other person other than those listed my engage in this work. The person
who has done the work must be on site to answer questions during inspections.

Here are some general requirements:
 All 120 volt outlets, switches, etc. in bedrooms shall be arc fault protected at the panel.
 Smoke detectors shall be in each bedroom and outside bedroom area, as well on every level of
house and tied together with three-wire with ground.
 Before calling for covering inspection, all wires shall be stripped and grounding conductors made
up with pig tails.
 Do not cut wire shorter than 6” from the front of the box.
 Bond all metal boxes with approved means.
 Do not install devices on cover inspection except one or two GFI that will be used for power while
under construction.
 Staple wire flat (not edge) every 4 feet.
 Staple within 12 inches or closer of each box on same stud as box.
 Be sure all connections are secure and tight.
