ENGINE ROOM EQUIPMENT Title of Scenario Language and level Duration (estimated) Requirements The Engine Room English B2 2h The MarEng study materials (available on CD as well as at http://mareng.utu.fi )Public Licence INTRODUCTION The machinery described in the texts, pictures and soundtracks is both complicated and extensive. All of it has its function in relation to other pieces of equipment. In order to simplify things a little it is useful to group the machinery according to sub-systems, e.g. air, steam, freshwater, seawater, fuel, lubrication oil, etc. NAVIGATION INSIDE MARENG 1. Some of the equipment is fairly difficult for those of you who haven’t done work (or work practice) in engine rooms. However, the words in this list are in European languages where the names are very much similar to the English ones. 2. BINGO It is part of the teacher’s job to read the English names of the equipment listed in the table out loud – so as to animate a game of BINGO. The English equivalents follow below the table! Smörjoljekylare (SE) Meerwasserpumpe (DE) Linea de eje (ES) Tratamiento de aguas residuals (ES) Seewasserkühler (DE) Séparateur d’eau de cale (FR) Maskintelegraf (SE) Pompa a pistone di sentina (IT) Zoetwaterkoelpomp Casa das máquinas (PT) (NL) Collecteur de gas Brûleur de d’échappement (FR) chaudière (FR) Genratoraggregaat (NL) Leitstand (DE) Kontrollrum (SE) Auspuffsammelrohr (DE) Cabeça do motor (PT) Culasse (FR) Caldera (ES) Quemador (ES) Färskvattengenerator (SE) Hydrofor (DE) Kraftstoffeinheit (DE) Bomba de circulación (ES) Evaporateur (FR) Motore ausiliario (IT) Brandstofolieā afscheider (NL) Stevenrohrdichtung (DE) Refroidisseur d’eau de mer (FR) Caixa de mar (PT) Abgaskesselwasserpumpe (DE) Enfriador de agua dulce (ES) Frischwasserkühlpumpe (DE) Avgaspanna (SE) Collettore dei gas di scarico (IT) The same equipment in English. N.B. that some names come up two or three times. Then the teacher needs to call those names the same number of times as a signal to the group that they need to look again for an equivalent.
