Fr. Rene’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
Previous to today’s Sunday Gospel are two episodes which relate our Lord teaching to his disciples on
poverty (Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus) and avoiding offenses, that is, those that resist the glory
of God and those that place obstacles to others in the divine way. Having heard and seen the Lord’s
exceeding care for the salvation of one soul, the disciples asked the Lord to “increase their faith.” And
how well they asked for that which is really the most important: a profound and solid faith, a strong
unshakeable trust in God. Not for nice things that people should say about them. Not even for them to
succeed by human standards. For faith, believing steadfastly, would enable them to follow poverty and
guard them against giving offenses.
Faith, even that of the size of a mustard seed, is powerful; it can do many things. In fact, the Lord
mentions two mighty acts of faith: the transplanting of a tree, with deep roots in the earth, and its planting
in the waves of the sea. Something quite impossible! But that is the power of faith. Even if our trust in
God is small, it is nonetheless strong and effective, because it relies on God and not just in our own
strength. Our God will accomplish things the way he knows how, and He will do them the way he
chooses best.
Yet, to every believer the temptation to pride is on the horizon. Because faith, the greatest force in the
world, which makes its possessor a keeper of God’s commandment and enables him to accomplish
wonderful works, may cause him to boast in his virtues. Thus, the Lord, by giving a fit example of a
ploughing and sheep-feeding servant, forewarns his disciples and all of us. He requires another service:
to humble oneself in self-surrender. That is, as the sun obeys, the moon submits herself, and the angels
are subject, God requires that we, as his servants, should wait on Him, that we perform our appointed
service, that we do what we ought to do, and not seek praise from ourselves. Surely, to those who work
as faithful servants, our God of great goodness promises rewards, and the greatness of his mercy and
loving-kindness far exceeds the labors and toils of his servants.
The initial meetings for both Confirmation and First Communion parents were well attended. A promising
start. Let’s keep on praying for them and for our thirty-nine Confirmation and thirty-six First Communion
candidates.
Four RCIA candidates, Steven Alvarado, Jonathan Gomez, Frank Velasquez, and Johan Ayala, will
begin their journey of faith on October 4th. Again, your prayers for them and for their catechists.
A special thank you to Kathy Priven for leading St. Aloysius Parish St. Vincent de Paul Society for seven
fruitful years. Because of her devotion and commitment to the poor, many of our needy people in Great
Neck have been truly assisted. Though her term as president has expired, she will still remain a member
of SVDP Society. By the way, we are in need of volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul Society. Kindly,
consider this call prayerfully. Also, many thanks to the Guadalupana (Our Lady of Guadalupe) Group and
to our Spanish Charismatic Prayer Group for their cash donations to our parish. May the good Lord
supply you in all your needs and endeavors.
And finally, a believer was coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as
he always is to shake hands. He grabbed the worshipper by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor
said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!” The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the
Lord, Pastor.” The Pastor questioned, “How come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?” He
whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”
Peace!
Fr. Rene
