As outlined in the talk on “Updates on the IEEE MAS LINK” during
the SB Office Bearers Meet, we are having challenges in reporting the
events being held in our student branches. The print edition is costing us a
fortune. We need to really look at alternatives. As the issue is limited to 12
pages, this time, we are forced to carry forward almost 20 events (received
in time for publishing) which include the section technical meetings. In
this issue, we have published the reports on various events organized by
the student branches of the following institutions — ranging from guest
lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences, membership drive meetings,
inaugural functions, interaction meetings and, launching of society chapters:

Discussion Forum
Discussion Forum is a visionary initiative
by the branch to impart latest technology to
the members and keep them updated with the
same. At initial stage, all senior student branch
officers took their turn to teach their new
members. A wide range of topics of topic were
covered ranging from “issues and challenge to
4G” to “cloud computing”. The monthly
updates from the reliable IEEE spectrum
magazine were used often to give insights of
technological developments in various fields.
After its success from the members, they were
made to participate intensively by allowing
them to present on these latest developments.
This move was made by the branch as a part of
development of soft and communication skills
of its members. The vision of giving insight to
the rapid technological development and
creating self awareness and equipping
themselves to the future challenges of its
members doesn’t seem to be a myth. Discussion
Forum is platform purely created for its
members by the senior members. This initiative
has still long way to go to attain its vision.
Some of the forum discussions during Jul-Aug
2011 include:

Duplexer and its applications by
A.Sakthi , final year

Electronic notice board using Zigbee
module by Senthil, 2nd year


Cadence RF Spectra
A two day work shop on Cadence RF
Spectra was conducted during 6-7, Sep 2011 to
enable the students to have an idea of design
methodology of radio frequency Integrated
Circuits. Mr. Shreyas of Cadence explained
about the fully Customized Cadence Virtuoso.
He gave brief introduction about cadence usage
flow in a comprehensive manner. The Cadence
IC flow embraces Schematic Entry, Simulation,
layout, physical verification of Design Rule
Check and Layout Vs Schematic Check, RC
Extraction, GDSII Binary file Generation. The
students were put into groups and were made
to design Low Noise Amplifier, a critical part
of receiver front end of any wireless system. At
the end of the programme, the students were
happy to have learnt a industry specific
software. This workshop was organized and
conducted by Dr. S. Kanthamani, Asst. Prof.

Tecuthsav 2011
To celebrate the enthusiasm and
epitomize students’quest for knowledge,
Thiagarajar College of Engineering organized the
Tecuthsav 2011 on 14th Sep 2011. TCE SB of
IEEE joined hands with Dept of ECE to organize
its part in the technical extravaganza named as
TELETEC. Around 300 participants attended
and took part in various competitions. Mrs.
Sundar Rayasam, the Senior Manger,
QualComm, Hyderabad inaugurated the event.
The event kicked off with technical paper
presentation contest in which ten shortlisted
papers were presented out of 150 received
covering different areas of EE. The topics of
the presentation ranged from Remote Patient
Monitoring Systems Using Android Phones to
the Nano Structure Developments for Solar
Cells. The other events included: techatlon,
hackatrix, line follower, Mr & Mrs.Teletec.
Tecathlon was a three-round event that tested
participants’ technical aptitude, simulation skills
and knowledge in fundamentals. Hackatrix
intended to bring out the programming skills of
young minds. As a part of automation, a robotic
contest named line follower was inducted to
the event. Techutsav of the ECE department
saw a grand finish with Mr & Mrs.Teletec, a
managerial event. Tecuthsav 2011 lived up to
the expectations of students trying to carve a
niche in their own extra ordinary way.

Dr. Rupa elucidated the high possibility
of cancer among women. She said that while
one percent of women in India are prone to
cancer, compared 30% in US, the mortality rate
in India is much greater than in US. This is
because of the lack of awareness among the
Indian population about cancer and its
preventive measures. She elaborated on the
prominent types of cancer seen in women such
as cervical and breast cancer etc. She briefed
about the self-examination procedure for breast
cancer - a method which can help in diagnosing
and treating cancer at an early stage. When
practiced on a regular basis it can reduce the
mortality rate. She also explained about the
medical procedures such as Mammography,
MRI scans etc. which help in the early diagnosis
of breast cancer. Furthermore she highlighted
the age groups that are most prone to this type
of cancer. She concluded the lecture highlighting
the importance of a healthy diet and healthy
habits in keeping women protected from such
fatal illnesses.
About 300 students & faculty, including
those from Dr. NGP Arts & Science College,
Dr. NGP Institute of Technology attended the

The event started with a quick interactive
activity in which Mr. Hari Krishnan, chairman
of the SB gave an introduction to IEEE. He
spoke about IEEE’s evolution, mission, vision,
how IEEE helps and shapes the career and
the role of IEEE in an engineer’s life. He
also highlighted the benefits of membership.
Mr. S. Bala Ragavendraa, Secretary explaining
the values of membership. Ms. Kamala,
advisor WIE affinity group introduced WIE to
the students and spoke about the benefits of
being a part of it. The session received a good

Workshop on Green IT at Rajalakshmi Engineering College
University of Western Sydney, Australia
conducted the workshop. During the workshop,
he outlined the current scenario where the
world’s climate heats up and our environment
deteriorates causing potentially disastrous
consequences. The individuals and organisations
that use IT and the IT industry have now a new
role to play – helping to create a greener, more
sustainable environment.
A Workshop on “Green IT: How You and
IT Can Help to Create a Sustainable Environment”
was organized on 7th Sep 2011 by the IEEE
Student Branch and CSI Student Chapter of
Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai.
Professor San Murugesan, Director of
BRITE Professional Services, and Adjunct Prof.,
He highlighted that IT is both a problem
and a solution to environmental sustainability.
IT affects our environment in many ways; each
stage of a computer’s life – production, use,
and disposal presents environmental challenges.
So, we need to make IT systems and their use
greener. In addition, we can leverage IT in
innovative ways to reduce environmental
problems. Green IT, aka green computing, is an
umbrella term referring to environmentally
sound IT systems, applications, and practices.
There is a growing interest in Green IT as it has
both economic and environmental imperatives.
In this workshop, participants learnt
about the causes and effects of global warming
and environmental degradation, IT’s
environmental impact, what Green IT means,
and approaches to greening IT and how IT can
be used to improve environmental sustainability.
They were also introduced to a range of topics
such as computer power management, green
software, e-waste, data waste, green computers,
eco-labelling of computers, greening of IT and
greening by IT. The workshop had a
presentation, video illustrations and interactive
discussions.
