At initial stage, all senior student branch officers took their turn to teach their new members. A wide range of topics of topic were covered ranging from “issues and challenge to 4G” to “cloud computing”. The monthly updates from the reliable IEEE spectrum magazine were used often to give insights of technological developments in various fields. After its success from the members, they were made to participate intensively by allowing them to present on these latest developments. This move was made by the branch as a part of development of soft and communication skills of its members. The vision of giving insight to the rapid technological development and creating self awareness and equipping themselves to the future challenges of its members doesn’t seem to be a myth. Discussion Forum is platform purely created for its members by the senior members. This initiative has still long way to go to attain its vision. Some of the forum discussions during Jul-Aug 2011 include: Duplexer and its applications by A.Sakthi , final year Electronic notice board using Zigbee module by Senthil, 2nd year Dynamic charging: new electric race cars by I.Thanga Kathiresh, 2nd year Power line communication V.Sukhadha, 2nd year Zigbee and applications by Sahana and Vaishnavi , 2nd year by Cadence RF Spectra A two day work shop on Cadence RF Spectra was conducted during 6-7, Sep 2011 to enable the students to have an idea of design methodology of radio frequency Integrated Circuits. During the workshop, he outlined the current scenario where the world’s climate heats up and our environment deteriorates causing potentially disastrous consequences. The individuals and organisations that use IT and the IT industry have now a new role to play – helping to create a greener, more sustainable environment. A Workshop on “Green IT: How You and IT Can Help to Create a Sustainable Environment” was organized on 7th Sep 2011 by the IEEE Student Branch and CSI Student Chapter of Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai. Professor San Murugesan, Director of BRITE Professional Services, and Adjunct Prof., He highlighted that IT is both a problem and a solution to environmental sustainability. IT affects our environment in many ways; each stage of a computer’s life – production, use, and disposal presents environmental challenges. So, we need to make IT systems and their use greener. In addition, we can leverage IT in innovative ways to reduce environmental problems. Green IT, aka green computing, is an umbrella term referring to environmentally sound IT systems, applications, and practices. There is a growing interest in Green IT as it has both economic and environmental imperatives. In this workshop, participants learnt about the causes and effects of global warming and environmental degradation, IT’s environmental impact, what Green IT means, and approaches to greening IT and how IT can be used to improve environmental sustainability. They were also introduced to a range of topics such as computer power management, green software, e-waste, data waste, green computers, eco-labelling of computers, greening of IT and greening by IT.
