Proposals should adhere to the guidelines set forth for submission. Proposals that fail to meet the selected strand and submission criteria will not be considered. Workshop presenters must choose one of the workshop strands. Please note that proposals will be judged on the relevance to one of the strands. The workshops should be “hands on” and interactive. Conference Strands: The following workshop strands will assist educators and administrators to embrace innovative teaching and management methods ensuring a quality and equitable education for all: Saving Their Lives through Education and Access: Created by three African American women activists, the Black Lives Matter Movement hashtag has spun conversations, actions, and demonstrations in our communities and in our schools. This strand invites proposals which will demonstrate how schools, districts, and communities can work to improve the outcomes for students while fostering meaningful engagement and facilitating the growth of student awareness and responsiveness. Proposals should address the importance of a unified effort to reverse the school-to-prison and school-to-grave pipeline, share positive behavioral interventions, and demonstrate restorative justice systems which have been successful in reducing the number of days students are suspended or expelled from school. Changing Educational Outcomes: In an era of increased accountability and high-stakes testing, schools have been labeled and stigmatized causing a darkened perception of the quality of teachers and students making up the learning environment. This strand calls for proposals from districts or schools that have successfully engaged in sustainable processes which have led to increased performance for minority students. Presenters may address recruitment and retention strategies used to keep the highest performing teachers in front of our lowest performing students and share professional development strategies that equip teachers to actively engage today’s learner. Proposals providing leading alternative graduation options and programs such as Early College High School programs, Career and Technical Education Programs, Portfolio District Process implementation, Career and Technical Integration, and Credit Recovery programs will also be accepted. Early Childhood Leading and Learning: Early Childhood Literacy is critical to the development of competent students and successful schools. Proposals should address the various aspects of early literacy and numeracy and provide teachers and leaders resources to excel in early childhood education. Topics such as program implementation, professional development systems, linguistic and cultural diversity, and early childhood education curriculum, including literacy, math, science, the arts, and social, emotional, and physical development are also encouraged. 9 | 2016 NABSE Conference Information A Holistic Approach to Student Success through Social Emotional Learning, Trauma Sensitive School Practices and Wraparound Services: Traumatic experiences can have a tremendous impact on concentration, memory, and the organizational and language abilities of children. Recent studies have shown that often these experiences lead to problems with academic performance, behavior, socialization, emotional stability, readiness, and self-control in the classroom. Understanding the impact of trauma can help educators recognize and address the underlying causes impacting student success and address difficulties with learning, behavior, social boundaries and relationships. This strand is designed to provide insight into childhood trauma and explore Social/Emotional Learning strategies that yield great results. Proposals should address trauma sensitive schools, instruction, and classrooms as well as provide innovative practices that have proven effective with students in high need areas. Proposals may address aspects of family and community engagement, wrap around services provided through school partnerships and/or student-centered behavioral resources. Technology Integration, STEM and 21st Century Leading and Learning: This strand calls for proposals that reflect the best thinking in the fields of technology integration, stem, steam and 21st Century leading and learning. Proposals must be informed by theory, research, and practice that have led to improved student outcomes for teachers as well as school leaders and demonstrate an awareness of issues of diversity and inclusion. Presentations may also address the digitizing of education and highlight best practices surrounding the effective use of technology to improve student achievement in challenging environments. This strand further invites proposals focused on social media and its impact on school policies, responsible use of social media, digital classrooms, online education programs and expanding remediation opportunities for students, use of electronic textbooks, virtual learning for credit retrieval or recovery, engaging digital dinosaurs, and enhancing learning through assistive technology. Cultural Responsive Systems — Leadership, Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction and Intervention: Culturally responsive school systems are derived from the systemic implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy and are the result of those leadership, teaching and instructional philosophies, practices, and policies that create inclusive environments for families from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Proposals related to this strand must address the intentional work found in a culturally responsive system. Programs and practices that demonstrate the systematic emphasis on cultural and the relevance of culture in curriculum, establishing a culture of high expectations for student achievement in all schools and for all students, and methods of successfully and consistently incorporating the history, values, and cultural knowledge of students’ home communities in the school curriculum are highly encouraged. District and School Board Leadership: Leadership at the district level is multi-faceted and requires the ability to masterfully set the conditions to optimize the success of students and adults through the impeccable implementation of leadership systems that encourage the growth and development of a global community. This strand will highlight best practices and provide district leaders with resources and information proven to positively impact system-level work. Because of the breadth of this area, proposals in the following areas will be considered: Mastering distributed leadership, accountability and continuous improvement in the era of ESSA, Superintendent/School Board relationships, Principal supervision and professional development, Developing aspiring leaders, Succession planning, Eliminating achievement gaps, Assigning and utilizing staff, Collaboration and team-based leadership, Community engagement, Race relations, Setting and modeling school climate, Understanding diversity and changing demographics, Administrator/Teacher evaluation, Union relations, Politics and the district office, Image and community relations, School/Employee wellness programs, improving culture and productivity, and Employee discipline. 10 | 2016 NABSE Conference Information Proposals are also being accepted for school systems which have demonstrated sustainable success in the recruitment of Highly-Qualified educators and are winning in the quest to attract and maintain minority educators in our most challenging environments. Further, proposals designed to help other leaders establish meaningful relationships and set a district culture of excellence evidence by high expectations and accountability and characterized by partnerships for support, career development, equity, and cultural competency are encouraged.
