CHAIR CHALLENGES – Band and orchestra students wishing to gain advancement in their ensembles can send an email to Dr. Andress at
samuel.andress@cjuhsd.net indicating their name and the name of the person who sits directly above them in the seating order, and which
band the challenge is for (Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Band(s) or Wind Ensemble). Dr. Andress schedules them and puts the date of
the challenge on the “Weekly.” Chair challenges consist of playing a chromatic scale and/or any major or minor scale, in the Grand Master
scale pattern at a consistent tempo or of a specific piece of music that we are currently working on. The standard used to assess the challenge
is the three T’s of music: In Tone, In Tune, In Time. We schedule chair challenges in the order that they are received and we generally do
only one challenge per rehearsal. Please be patient, and send only one request via email at a time. Thank you!

COLLEGE BAND AUDITIONS & SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES – We encourage all of our Los Osos musicians to consider
playing in college band, whether or not they plan to be music majors. College bands provide an excellent opportunity to meet other students
from across the campus and from different majors. Different colleges offer different scholarship opportunities for incoming students, both
music majors and non-majors. We encourage our seniors to research the music opportunities at the colleges of their choice and to continue
furthering their musical experience! While our program does not endorse one college music program over another, we occasionally receive
college band audition materials in the mail and offer this information to our students. The following college programs have sent us this
information:

DISNEYLAND PERFORMANCE RESCHEDULED! – The Regiment parade performance that was scheduled for Friday, December 2 nd
has been MOVED EARLIER. The event will now be on Wednesday, November 2 nd. We will be leaving Los Osos HS that morning at
8:00am and will leave Disney at 9:00pm and be back at Los Osos by 10:00pm that night. There will be no zero period on Thursday,
November 3rd. Students will be required to have an activity permit signed by all of their teachers and returned to Dr. A by a stated deadline in
order to be eligible to attend this trip. Students with discipline issues, frequent tardies to class, or bad grades may be excluded from
participation in this trip. The uniform fittings for 8th graders have been rescheduled as well to accommodate this date change and are noted in
the “Schedule of Events” listed below in this document. This was a Disney schedule change, and not our choice. We appreciate
understanding and flexibility as we work to make this change happen. Thank you!

DONATIONS NEEDED – The band and color guard program is in immediate need of donations of the following items. The school budget
does not provide for these items. If each student could commit to bring even one item throughout the semester, it would be greatly
appreciated, and will help preserve our precious budget money for more urgent issues like instrument repair. Thanks so much to those who
have already donated!
1) Plastic grocery bags.
2) 1” wide blue painters’ tape.
3) AA, AAA & 9 volt batteries for our instrument tuners and metronomes.

HONOR BAND & ORCHESTRA OPPORTUNITIES – Participation in an honor bands & orchestras provides a challenging, musicallyrewarding opportunity for students and helps them to advance their musical knowledge and understanding beyond simply playing in their own
high school groups. Honor group participation also looks great on college and university applications. Honor groups are “extra,” meaning
that they are in addition to your first commitment, which is to your own program here at Los Osos. Dr. Andress does grant some schedule
exceptions to honor band students when overlaps occur, but as always it is the student’s responsibility to work this out in advance. We
encourage all of our students to seek out an honor band or orchestra experience this school year. The following opportunities are currently
available:
o CALIFORNIA ALL-STATE HONOR BANDS & JAZZ BANDS – Please visit www.cbda.org and click on the “auditions” tab for
full information. Completed applications and recordings must be submitted online by the morning of Thursday, December 1, 2016.
Late applications and recordings will not be accepted.
o SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY HONOR BAND – Please visit www.sbcmea.org and click on the “Honor Bands – Basin” tab at the
top. Then click on the “High School” tab and read the information there. Please put the $7.00 audition charge (cash or check made out
to LOHS Band) into THE BOX by no later than Tuesday, November 4, 2016, inside an envelope marked with the student name,
instrument(s) and “SB County Honor Band.” Late submissions will not be accepted. Students auditioning on multiple instruments
pay $7.00 per audition. If the website is not yet updated for this year, please be patient and continue to check back. Students MAY
audition for this ensemble. It does NOT interfere with the LO Festival of Bands, which will be held that Friday evening (after the
County rehearsal is over).
o SCSBOA ALL-SOUTHERN HONOR BANDS, ORCHESTRA, AND JAZZ BAND – Please visit www.scsboa.org and click on
the “Honor Groups” tab for full information. Completed honor band, jazz band and orchestra applications and audition fee must be
submitted to Dr. Andress by no later than Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Audition times will be posted on the SCSBOA prior to
Thanksgiving break. Late applications will not be accepted.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS – We cannot possibly overstate the value of a band student taking private lessons on his/her
instrument. Aside from daily individual practice, obviously, there really is no other single way for a musician to improve their skills than to
take individual lessons with a professional. These can be a simple half-hour a week, or an hour twice a month or (ideally) an hour a week.
The band experience is a full group experience and does not contribute to individual growth of each player nearly as fast as private lessons
can. Our master classes are like a group lesson, but individuals gain more from one-on-one attention. “Do you take private lessons on your
instrument?” is one of the very first questions we ask students in any of our auditions; followed by, “How often?” and “With whom?” The
following is a list of program-approved lessons teachers. Certainly there are other teachers in our area and many are fine people and wellqualified. THESE folks however have our highest endorsement. We will continue to add to and amend this list as best we can. GO FOR IT!

ATTENTION ALL TRUMPET PLAYERS WHO ARE NOT TAKING LESSONS - Professor David Evans is a professional
musician who gives trumpet lessons in Glendora for the low prices of $20 for a half hour, and $30 for an hour. With the end of the
school year approaching, Mr. Evan’s will be having many open lesson blocks as seniors graduate, which creates the perfect
opportunity for you to grow as a musician. Mr. Evans’ students have performed with or have been members of the Israel
Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, National Symphony, Cleveland Symphony, Dallas Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Canadian Brass Quintet. Instrument lessons are a vital part to the
growth of our program, if you have any questions, feel free to ask a fellow trumpet player who currently takes lessons from Mr.


REGIMENT STUDENTS, REGARDING OUR BAND UNIFORMS - Care of our band uniforms and accessories and grooming; just a
few reminders for both our Regiment and booster parents:




Please hang up pants neatly and evenly, folded at the seams. Please snap, at least, the top two snaps on your jacket to keep jacket secure
and neat on the hanger. We do not want our jackets or our pants to fall to the bottom of garment bags.
It is very important that our ostrich feather plumes be handled with great care, and only with gloves. Gloves are located within each
plume box. Plumes go directly into the plume boxes when removed, and are not to be placed on any other surfaces. Again, plumes are
delicate, and are not to come in contact with anything other than a gloved hand, for oils from hands and arms, as well as other surfaces,
will damage our plumes.
Please use a Sharpie permanent ink marker to write your name on the inside of your Dinkles, as to avoid losing them, and confusion when
everyone is changing at games, rehearsals, parades, and any other events where we are wearing uniforms.
Please keep your gloves and spats in your shako box, for the ones you were issued are meant to last, are not easily replaced, and are
costly.




We recommend keeping both a clean pair of white socks, as well as black socks, in your duffle bags.
Please attempt to keep skull caps given to you for future use. Also, if you have long hair, please arrive with your hair already up to help
with time management when we are dressing and preparing to perform.
Please remember to remove all jewelry, and to have nail polish removed from nails prior to performances of any kind.
Lastly, if you are given any kind of “loaners”, it is imperative that you return them.
If in doubt about anything, please just ask 

ZERO PERIOD SECURITY CONCERN – It has come to our attention that some students have reported missing money from their
backpacks during zero period. While we lock the Band Hall doors at 7:50am each morning and re-open them at 7:45pm, please understand
that the program and school cannot be held responsible for students’ backpacks being left unattended on the Band Hall floor or on the cement
planters outside the building. Students are strongly encouraged to lock their bags into their instrument lockers (for those who have large
enough lockers) or to keep their bags with them at the stadium during zero period rehearsals (hang them on the chain link fence during
rehearsal). Please assist us by being accountable for your belongings at all times. Thank you!
A Band & Color Guard Parent Guide to Marching Band
Field Show Tournaments!
by
Dr. Sam R. Andress
Program Founder & Director – Los Osos High School Band, Orchestra & Color Guard – Rancho Cucamonga, CA
Concert Band Conductor – University of California, Riverside
Field Adjudication Steering Committee – The Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association
I.
Our Los Osos philosophy as it applies to competition in the arts:
ON “WINNING” – Our band and color guard program has never been about and will never be about winning. This activity is not like that of the
sports activity. In order for a true competitive environment to exist, all of the bands would have to play the same exact musical arrangements, march
the same exact drill formations, have the same exact number of people, etc. (you get the point). The field show tournament adjudicators would then
be in a position to make a fair assessment of comparison between the various marching bands. But, this is not how it works. We each choose our
own show. We design our own drill moves and we all have different numbers of instruments and color guard performers on the field. Our bands are
made up of 9th through 12th graders, with no “varsity” versus “J.V.” status given. All performers are on the field at all times, with no one to pull fro m
the bench, like in sports. So, in this activity, we are not in competition with other marching bands. Rather, we are in competition with ourselves.
Our goal is to improve our show and refine our program each and every time we put on the uniform and take to the field. We are striving for
individual (and thus collective) success of the organization as a whole. Our goal is to never move backwards from one performance to the next, but
rather to always see individual and collective improvement. This is how we measure our success. The adjudicators at field show tournaments are
asked to compare bands of similar size and to make assessments based upon what they see and hear. The obvious challenge with this is that each
marching band will be doing a completely different show. This is an “apples and oranges” situation in many cases. So, we the performers must
focus on only those things which are in our control. We are in control of how well we know and are able to perform our show. This is our focus.
We do not focus on “beating” other marching bands, because this may be impossible. The reason for this is because sometimes the judges will prefer
the type of music that another band plays over ours. Or perhaps they will like the flag and uniform colors better, and so forth. Furthermore, we are a
respectable group, and not only are we not in competition with other bands, but we encourage their success as well. After all, better groups all
around means more success for the overall activity, and more support for music education.
Accordingly, we:
1)
2)
Focus on what we can control (ourselves and our show).
Enjoy the journey as much as the destination (a good rehearsal is as enjoyable as a fine-tuned performance). AND, we spend MUCH
more time in rehearsal than performance, right?
3)
II.
Keep in mind always that we are in competition only with ourselves. This is our motivation to work hard and to achieve, both for
ourselves and for the others in our organization.
How Marching Bands are Adjudicated by the SCSBOA:

Peer judging system.
o Our adjudicators are all current or retired band directors or color guard or percussion instructors.
o Our adjudicators undergo yearly training sessions and strive to be fair and consistent.
o Criteria reference language on the back of each score sheet provides words to articulate how a group has been ranked.

Think of this like a report card.
 Box 1 = “F” (you shouldn’t be in the marching band activity. Please sell your instrument immediately and try doing
something else).
 Box 2 = “D” (your work is below standard)
 Box 3 = “C” (your work is average)
 Box 4 = “B” (excellent work)
 Box 5 = “A” (superior work – you are among the best groups out there).

See attached recap.
o Our recaps and score sheets from each tournament will be posted in the Band Hall and readily accessible for parents and students. We
encourage folks to peruse these and see what the adjudicators had to say about our work.
o Each weekend Dr. A reviews the recordings and sheets and makes a list of things to correct or add to the show in the upcoming week
of rehearsals.

The SCSBOA Championships grid is located at www.scsboa.org
o Weekly updates of scores for each division.
o Recaps (minus adjudicator names) for each past tournament this season.
Field Show Audience Etiquette: We want to uphold our reputation as a “classy” group!
III.

Admission cost can be as high as $12.00 per person.
o Children usually receive a discounted rate.
o Most tournaments are cash-only (no debit or credit cards). Please plan ahead!

Please follow and observe the signage regarding parking. Please show respect and appreciation to the volunteers who run these huge events.
It is tricky to park these many school buses, equipment vehicles, and fans on an average high school campus!

Held in a football stadium, but treated like an indoor concert. For everyone to fully enjoy the performances, we ask that you obey the
following guidelines. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
o No talking during performances.
o Please silence your phones.
o We only cheer and clap, no air horns or noise-makers allowed (can result in judging penalty!) We do not “boo” anything, ever!
Audience members play an important role in making a great performance truly great. Cheer on each group as you would your own –
imagine that unforgettable moment your child will experience with hundreds of people cheering them on. Lead by example, every
student deserves applause for his or her tremendous amount of time, effort, and talent.
o No smoking in or around the stadium.
o Audience members are not permitted to enter/exit the grandstands during performances; only in between performances.

Wear your Los Osos gear and scarves!
o Please sit together as a cheering group.
o If seated in front of the pressbox, please remain seated so as to not block the line of sight for the judges and refrain from applause or
cheering that overlaps the music on the field. If the judges can’t hear us, they mark us down!

Remember, all performers from all groups work hard. We only say positive things aloud and we keep negative comments to ourselves. We
are representing the school and community when wearing our colors abroad, and we take that very seriously.

Parents do not talk with the field show adjudicators. Please speak with the band director if you have any questions about scores, placement,
etc.

When possible we give complimentary wristbands to our bus-riding chaperones and pit crew.
o These wristbands allow admission to the visitor side of the stadium. Chaperones/pit crew parents need to purchase their own
admission for home side seating if they wish to sit on that side.
o Some tournaments give us more wristbands than other tournaments do. This is not up to us. Please be flexible and understanding that
we are the guests, and this is not our decision. Chaperones and pit crew should be prepared to pay full admission if necessary.

Please avoid (and ask your students to avoid) posting blogs on the “World of Pageantry” website. This blog page is for marching band
fanatics. The dialogue located there is often very competitive and overly-dramatic and often negative. It’s not in line with our philosophy
stated above. Classy folks don’t post there. It has become a bit of a joke in the band director inner-circle. Please don’t represent us there!
Our kids work too hard for that!
THANK YOU for supporting our students in this huge endeavor. We have all worked very hard to make this happen and now it’s time to enjoy the
show!
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2016

Zero period (6:45am) Regiment rehearsal at Grizzly Field.

The Band Hall will be open today until 1:00pm. Please plan accordingly. Student Staff, we need to have the water cart brought inside and all
three storage bins locked at the beginning of 2nd lunch today. Students, please do not ask another teacher, security guard, or custodian to open
the room for you after it has been locked. This creates a security and liability issue for the school. Please know that the room is not
accessible today after 1:00pm and please plan ahead.

PASADENA CITY COLLEGE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES HONOR BAND – March in this year’s Rose Parade! Please visit
www.pccband.com for full information. Applications must be postmarked by September 26, 2016. Late applications will not be accepted.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2016

Zero period (6:45am) Concert Band & Wind Ensemble rehearsals at the Band Hall, Theatre, and Cafeteria. Regiment percussion and color
guard rehearsal at Grizzly Field. Concert Band and Wind Ensemble students, be sure to have your concert instrument for this morning’s
rehearsal.

GOLD CONCERT BAND & WIND ENSEMBLE CHAIR CHALLENGE – Caleb Pike vs. Sunni Dill (bari sax).

BLUE CONCERT BAND CHAIR CHALLENGE – Ariana Trinh vs. Michelle Du (clarinet).

ASSIGNMENT (for all brass, woodwind and string players in all classes) – Reed/slide/rosin check today for 25 points. Woodwinds will
have five (5) good-quality reeds on their stand for inspection. These reeds need to be out of the wrappers and should be rotated each day so
that each woodwind student has a minimum of five (5) working reeds at any good time. Brass players will be expected to completely
disassemble and reassemble their horns (all slides and valves out and back in) in a reasonable timeframe. This demonstrates that all slides and
valves are in good working order and can be manipulated for proper intonation. String players will have rosin and demonstrate that the bow
and all strings are in good, playable condition.

SYMPHONIC BAND CHAIR CHALLENGE – James Dingle vs. JP Peralta (trumpet).

DRUM MAJORS & EQUIPMENT CREW – Please set-up Study Hall furniture (4 Cafeteria tables, chairs all around) in the Band Hall
today during 2nd lunch so that it is ready for this afternoon. Thank you!

This evening’s rehearsal schedule is as follows. Attire is clean Regiment t-shirt, LO navy blue PE shorts, white socks and Dinkles. Bring
warm-up jackets and pants for the evening portion. Students also need their instruments and music and equipment, and plenty of water.
Tuesday night rehearsals are “open rehearsals” and all parent/guardians, relatives, and pets are invited to attend and watch from the bleachers,
provided that they respect the work environment and are not disruptive to the rehearsal process. Come join us and watch us learn!
3:15pm
Dinner break. Bring a sack lunch, parents drop something off, or leave campus. BE ON TIME GETTING BACK! Student Staff
meeting during this time in the drama classroom or Theatre stage. An optional-but-suggested study hall will be held during this hour
inside the Band Hall. This time is designed for students to do their homework and the room is kept quiet during that time. Students
may eat quietly while they do their homework, however the Band Hall must be left clean at the end of this time.
4:15pm
Master Classes at the Band Hall. Today’s master class is for all Regiment students. Orchestra-only students do not have master
classes yet (2nd semester we will). MUSIC PLAYING-MEMORIZATION TEST (for Regiment brass and woodwinds) – Today
during master class. Students will be asked to perform the field show music, measures 59-93 from memory. Correct notes, rhythms,
articulations, and dynamics are priorities for today’s test. Students will also mark time and do stepouts and visuals. These tests are
pass-fail, meaning that students who do not meet today’s standard may re-test as many times as they wish in the future until the test is
passed and the grade points are earned. Students may schedule re-tests with Dr. Andress and may pair-up with another member (from
their section or not) who has also not yet passed the test. Rookie members who have questions regarding this process should consult
their section leaders.
5:15pm
BREAK
5:30pm
Regiment full-rehearsal at Grizzly Field. Guest clinicians will join us tonight! Please be on time and prepared for this very big
rehearsal!
8:30pm
Rehearsal ends – students dismissed.
8:45pm
PARENT/GUARDIANS SHOULD BE HERE AT THIS TIME TO PICK-UP THEIR STUDENTS.
9:00pm
Band Hall lights-off and doors locked. All students must be pick-up or driving away from campus prior to this time. Please plan
accordingly. ALL CHILDREN LEFT UNATTENDED WILL BE SOLD TO THE CIRCUS.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

No zero period rehearsals this morning. This is an excellent time for our students to schedule before-school make-up tests or tutoring sessions
with their teachers. As a reminder, missing one class to make up work for another class is against school policy. Please schedule make-ups
and tutoring so that they do not interfere with our zero period rehearsals. Thank you!

SYMPHONIC BAND CHAIR CHALLENGE – Tony Gutierrez vs. Jacob Usita (alto sax).

EXTRA CREDIT SIGHT-READING OPPORTUNITY – The Chaffey College Concert Band rehearses tonight from 7:00-9:30pm in the
Chaffey College Band Room, and band director Pat Aranda has invited Los Osos HS band students to sit-in on the rehearsals and sight-read!
This is a low-pressure, fun opportunity for our musicians to practice their sight-reading and meet fellow musicians from our area. If you can’t
stay all the way until 9:30pm, it’s okay to leave early. Earn extra credit for this by taking a selfie picture on your phone with Mr. Aranda and
show this picture to Dr. A. tomorrow to earn ten (10) points for all band classes that you are currently enrolled in. Go for it!
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2016 – Happy Birthday to Former Regiment Drum Major Matthew Visk! (Class of 2012)

Zero period (6:45am) Regiment rehearsal at Grizzly Field.

SYMPHONIC BAND CHAIR CHALLENGE – Devin Narmore vs. Nick Mitsos (baritone).

Today is an excellent day for after-school music sectionals or private practice time at the Band Hall. Band, orchestra & color guard students
are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this available time. Regiment students who need to make-up playing/memorization tests are
encouraged to do so at this time or any weekday day during 2 nd lunch.

The Band Hall will be open today until 4:00pm. Please plan accordingly. Students, please do not ask another teacher, security guard, or
custodian to open the room for you after it has been locked. This creates a security and liability issue for the school. Please know that the
room is not accessible today after 4:00pm and please plan ahead.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2016 – Happy Birthday to Percussion/Visual Instructor Dave Natal!

SPIRIT FRIDAYS – Our newest tradition! Every Friday, our band and color guard students are encouraged to wear our apparel to school to
support and promote our awesome program. Regiment t-shirts, warm-ups, winter guard shirts, field show theme shirts, navy blue polos with
the logo, etc. are all good!

Zero period (6:45am – normal time! We get an extended rehearsal this morning!) Regiment rehearsal at Grizzly Field.

SYMPHONIC BAND CHAIR CHALLENGE – Sarah Rojas vs. Emily Rybkowski (flute).

ASSIGNMENT (for all students) – All instruments, music, and equipment will go home for the weekend. Lockers may contain only white
Dinkles and are to be left clean and locked. The Band Hall will be open today until 4:00pm. Prior to that time, please make arrangements to
have all lockers cleared and locked for the weekend. Students, please do not ask another teacher, security guard, or custodian to open the
room for you after it has been locked. This creates a security and liability issue for the school. Please know that the room is not accessible
today after 4:00pm and please plan ahead. REGIMENT STUDENTS MAY LEAVE STUFF UNTIL AFTER TONIGHT’S FOOTBALL
GAME.


No events today. Sleep in! Go to the beach or the movies! Spend time with family, friends and pets! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
Upcoming Schedule of Events:

UPDATES are listed in bold type!

Please do not prioritize this list! All events listed here carry equal weight and importance in our minds and for our program. A
parade performance is as important as a football game, as a booster club meeting, as a concert festival, as a jazz band event at the
junior high school, as field show championships. If it’s on this list, it’s required, and it’s important. Please know this!

In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Regiment (band and guard) students also participate in weekly
marching band rehearsal every Tuesday evening from 5:30-8:30pm in the football stadium, beginning on the first week of school through
until winter break.

In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsal and the events listed below, all band and color guard students also participate in a weekly
master class rehearsal every Tuesday afternoon from 4:15-5:15pm at the band hall and quad area, beginning the first week of school through
until the last week of school.

In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Winter Guard students also
participate in weekly rehearsals every Tuesday evening, beginning in January and extending through until the last week of school.

“Call Time Sheets” which give specific details (when and where to arrive, what to wear, what to bring with you, etc.) will be posted on this
“Weekly” page approximately one week prior to the scheduled event.
