HATE CRIME ALERT
DENVER, CO
JUNE 26 - JULY 29, 2011
Capitol Hill, Uptown, Downtown; South Park Hill, East Colfax
ABC 7, July 19, 2011 [upd 21]: Police are trying to identify a gang of men who are beating couples with baseball bats and
robbing them in downtown Denver. Just before 2 a.m. on July 16, a couple was walking home from a restaurant-bar near East
10th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street when they were surrounded by a group of men. On June 26 near 1000 Broadway, a
couple was in an alley near their vehicle when a group of men walked up and "assaulted them with a baseball bat and demanded
money," a police report said. The robbers grabbed the woman's purse and ran to a waiting car. Police describe the attackers as four
to five black men, ages 18 to 21 years.
“Couples”? Only when it happened again did the media raise the one relevant fact about these targeted “couples”:
KDVR, July 29: There’s been a third attack involving suspects armed with
baseball bats in the downtown area, and Denver Police say the group
responsible is targeting White and Hispanic men who are traveling by foot
between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Police are warning residents in the
Capitol Hill area and south metro Denver about the attacks, which began early
Tuesday morning in the Capitol Hill neighborhood at 10th Ave. and Grant
and 11th Ave. and Corona. Three more people were attacked and robbed
Thursday night in an alleyway at 14th Ave. between Humboldt and
Lafayette streets. The suspects have been described as a group of four to
ten black men and women in their late teens or early 20s.
So-called “flash mob” attacks against Anglos and Hispanics (and Asians) are not unique to Denver- and they are not new to Denver:
Denver Post, November 20, 2009: The Denver Police Department announced today that they have made 32 arrests during a sweep
to end a four-month spree of what police said were racially motivated assaults and robberies in downtown Denver, including the
LoDo entertainment district. A task force comprised of the Denver Police, FBI and the Denver District Attorney's Office investigated
26 incidents in which groups of black males verbally harassed and then assaulted white or Hispanic males.
What does our political class propose to do? If past is prologue… nothing of lasting effect. From July 2003 to the end of 2010 the
Mayor was John Hickenlooper. In 2004 and 2005, Hickenlooper oversaw some of the highest crime rates in Denver’s history.
From 2005-2008, Denver did follow the rest of Colorado as property and violent crime rates decreased. But as the state’s crime rate
continued to decrease from 2008-2009, Denver’s crime rates have been returning – and the violence in Denver is worse now
than it was in mid 2003 when Hickenlooper took office. [http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/colorado/denver.html] Since becoming Governor,
what exactly has Hickenlooper proposed for the safety of Colorado’s law-abiding residents? And what does the new Denver Mayor,
Bill Vidal, propose?
Colorado’s students, Denver’s citizens, and the suburban community have the right to know: which population(s) are
committing these attacks; who are their targets; and when they will stop.
When in Denver, whites and Hispanics are advised to exercise caution.
